Problem restarting contexts in Cog 2341

In Cog release 2341, as distributed at http://www.mirandabanda.org/files/Cog/VM/VM.r2341/ this causes an MNU. It should evaluate to true: | a | a := false. [a ifFalse: [Error signal]] on: Error do: [:ex | a := true. ex retry] -- Matthew Fulmer (a.k.a. Tapple)

Problem loading ImageFormat

Hello — In 'Re: [Vm-dev] About StackInterpreter VM' <20110107035514.GA830(a)shell.msen.com>, David T Lewis talked about the ImageFormat-Package. However, without having it loaded previously, it does fail Loading: MNU on nil with #+. Reason: ImageFormat>>#initialize calls --8<-- initialize "ImageFormat initialize" BaseVersionNumbers := self baseVersionNumbers. BaseVersionMask := self baseVersionMask. CapabilitiesBitsMask := self capabilitiesBitsMask. ReservedBitsMask := self reservedBitsMask. KnownVersionNumbers := self knownVersionNumbers. PlatformByteOrderBit := 1 -->8-- ImageFormat>>#reservedBitsMask --8<-- reservedBitsMask "Bits available for use as capability bits. Reserve high order bit as the extension bit, to be set true if additional bits are required in the future." "ImageFormat reservedBitsMask printStringBase: 2" ^(16rFFFFFFFF bitXor: BaseVersionMask) bitAt: PlatformByteOrderBit put: 0 --8<-- As you can see, PlatformByteOrderBit is referenced before it is set in the initialize method. Simulator Question

Hi I am working with the InterpreterSimulator and I would like to send a message to an object inside the simulated environment. For example, I have the oop for true and I want to send it the message printString. My question is if this is possible. I don't know if there is a way to send a message to an object inside the simulation. I have thought about tinkering with the stack and calling an interpreter method. But I am not sure if this will work. Any hint will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Gabriel

About StackInterpreter VM

Hello, VM hackers i just want to ask, how well StackVM could replace original Squeak VM? If that's only image format aspect, then i think we can deal with that and forget about it once and for all. Also, i suspect that stack-interpreter VMs will be much more stable (because not including JIT), so people can always use it as a fallback solution if they can't make own code running stable on Cog. But if there are more issues than just image format, then please let me know. Because maintaining two different VMs is too much, especially that we don't have enough human resources for that. And so, we must choose. And choice is obvious, as to me. :) P.S. Can you please remind me, what conversion is needed between old image format and one which is edible by stack-based VM? And why just don't add it by default, so Stack VMs (and Cog) can read old image format (closure one)? -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko AKA sig.

Well I had to go back and find my note January 17, 2010 3:57:10 PM PST microsecond timing for GC work on Squeak Virtual Machine Development Discussion <vm-dev(a)lists.squeakfoundation.org> There was lots of discussion, solutions and well up to the maintainers to provide or not provide the api. Seems to work on a 5.8b11 mac cog vm, but since it's window dressing on top of the vm, it's hard to know if it's compiled into the vm you have (well other than see it returns 0). Questions about hash

Hi folks. I am trying to understand a little how hash is assigned and how it works in the SqueakVM. I have a couple of questions: 1) There are 12 bits in the ObjectHeader for the hash. I saw that the value of this hash comes from #newObjectHash. But....this method answers a hash of 16 bit: newObjectHash "Answer a new 16-bit pseudo-random number for use as an identity hash." lastHash := 13849 + (27181 * lastHash) bitAnd: 65535. ^ lastHash Since in the OH we have 12 bits, each place where this method is used, then we have to do something like this: header1 := (classFormat bitAnd: 16r1FF00) bitOr: (hash << HashBitsOffset bitAnd: HashBits). or hash := self newObjectHash. header := (self longAt: newOop) bitAnd: 16r1FFFF. "use old ccIndex, format, size, and header-type fields" header := header bitOr: ((hash << 17) bitAnd: 16r1FFE0000). .... so, we always need to trim it to 12 bits using (hash << HashBitsOffset bitAnd: HashBits). Now, I wonder, why #newObjectHash does not answer a 12bits long hash directly ? is it because of the hash function performance? 2) It looks to me that not, but can it change the hash of an object? if true, why and where? 3) If #basicIdentityHash is ONLY used for Sets and friends, why not letting the hash assignment as late/lazy as possible? i mean, instead of creating and assigning a hash at object creation, what if we do this in #hashBitsOf: oop where we can check in the hash is empty and if true assign one. Would this make sense or it would be worst? Thanks Mariano

argCnt, argVec, engVec alternatives

Hi, Ok, I'm trying to run the UnixOSProcessPlugin on Cocoa Cog VM (own version, still not updated with latest from Eliot). One of the things I need to solve is some references to argCnt, argVec, engVec in plugin implementation... I think it is not-good give a plugin access to vm parameters through globals... So, I wonder if there is an alternative to elegantly provide this... Cheers, Esteban

VM Benchmarks (Was: Re: [squeak-dev] [4.2] - VM <-> image release coordination)

Hi, i proposing to collect and put existing benchmarks into VMMaker repository. The idea is simple: when we will have an automated build server, then we could run benchmarks on a successful build and log the numbers to a file(s), so we could compare them between different builds or different VMs, and keep track of history, like many other projects do. -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko AKA sig.
