ffi-test-main.c fails on FreeBSD

In conjunction with getting Open Cobalt running on FreeBSD I have been looking into the problems with SqueakFFIPrims on FreeBSD and have reached a point that is beyond my understanding. I am not sure if the fix should come from the VM side or the FreeBSD port maintainer. I needed to get source code back into the ports tree so I did a make in /usr/ports/lang/squeak. I already had the 3.9 tarball, so that just repopulated the source and did the initial build. In the "files" folder I found patch files typical for a FreeBSD port. These patch source files from a generic tarball to work with FreeBSD. It says to run ffi-test-config but I have no such file. It says to type "make" to build a test suite but the build failed. It says to try with make CPU=any ABI=libffi LIB=-lffi which also failed. I traced the problem to the gcc search paths for includes and libraries -- turns out FreeBSD only searches /usr/include and /usr/lib when the required files are in /usr/local/include and /usr/local/lib. After some fiddling I finally had a "main" to test. It failed: ffi-test-main.c failed at line 361. Here is a bit from that file, ending with line 361: ffiInitialize(); for (ul= 0; ul < 15; ++ul) ffiPushSingleFloat(fa[ul]); GO(FFITypeSingleFloat, many); f= ffiReturnFloatValue(); ffiCleanup(); CHECK(f - ff < FLT_EPSILON); I worked out the CHECK macro but could not find what FLT_EPSILON is. Squeak VM port to Google Native Client

Hello, I'm playing with Google Native Client a bit and made a port of Squeak VM to it. It is far from complete (even the state where backspace or Cmd-p etc. does not work, sound does not work, etc.), It now reached to the state where I can say the basic part of it is working. The source code is available at: http://github.com/yoshikiohshima/NaClSqueak . Also, f you have Google Chrome 11 beta available, try to turn on the Native Client on (by typing "about:flags" into the title bar) and access: http://tinlizzie.org/~ohshima/squeak/squeak.html (The first try may take some time.) - It is gnuify-ed but we're still learning the JIT situation of NaCl. So, it' need some work to port Cog. - The image data is embedded as a C array in this executable. You can remove EMBEDDED_IMAGE_FILE flag off, and comment/uncomment the corresponding part of squeak.html, it can load the image separately via XMLHttpRequest of the browser. - There is some strange issue when you do fast drag the system window. - As you can see, the source code is derived from the Unix VM. It was hard for me to write some CMake stuff to set it up for the cross compilation. A help to merge it back to the Unix code would be greatly appreciated. - If Google takes over the world and all apps become a Native Client (may be even other browsers^^;), this port may be useful^^; -- Yoshiki

Cross compile Window from Unix/Mac os

Since the last Igor ( thank ) update it 's possible to cross compile windows VM(last version) from MacOs and Unix. Using Mingw and cmake. Now, i do for Cog, and for ARM9 processor. My process imply to fix some window file cause some include are wrong, then it the cross compiler don't find some include beginning by Uppercase(cause the file isn't beginning by uppercase). In /Platform/win32/vm/sqWin32Intel.c #include <float.h> instead #include <Float.h> in /Platform/win32/plugin/SocketPlugin/sqWin32NewNet.c #include <ws2tcpip.h> instead #include <Ws2tcpip.h> Regard Jean Baptiste Arnaud jbaptiste.arnaud(a)gmail.com

Direct object pointers vs indirect ones pros and cons

Hi , all RoarVM using object tables, while Squeak VM using direct pointers for object. This is a basic element of VM design, and i wonder, how much impact it does on overall VM speed. Both variants having own advantages/disadvantages, while i think, that with good JIT an extra indirection could be almost insignificant. But having indirect pointers to objects opens quite sexy perspectives. Being able to freely choose object(s) location means that: - its quite easy to implement object memory paging (swapping between memory and disc), - place particular object(s) into special memory location (good for FFI, object pinning etc) - #become: is O(1), instead of O(heap size) The downside of indirect pointers is, of course, a higher memory traffic, which directly impacts all operations everywhere. What else? I'd like to know, what you thinking about it, and why Squeak VM, in particular, using direct object pointers? What are this choice based on? I'd like to know. FT2Plugin stops working with latest version

Hi, I'm trying to build freetype plugin with latest version (Freetype-Plugin-dtl.63), and it is not working... and using Igor's version (61) it is working fine... unique change between 61 and 63 is: bytesPerWord "Answer the size of an object pointer in bytes." ^BytesPerWord ...so... something is wrong with that change... or with my attempts to understand it :P maybe I'm missing some initialization? cheers, Esteban

CogVM binaries as per VMMaker.oscog-eem.128/r2496 Fix regression in object-as-method/cannot-interpret for single and polymorphic inline cache misses (lookup:for:methodAndErrorSelectorInto:). Fix formatting bugette in context printing. This fixes a regression in objects-as-methods which Nicholas was suffering from as a crash during Run Coverage in the Test Runner. -- best, Eliot

NativeBoost installation woes with Mac OS X

Hi. On an Intel Mac running Mac OS X 10.6.8, I followed the instructions to install a NativeBoost VM found here: http://code.google.com/p/nativeboost/wiki/Installation. I downloaded the latest Mac NBCog VM, and ran into an error after evaluating NBInstaller install. I'm using the 4.3alpha-11636.image file. The 4.2 image gives a different set of errors but also wont install: The progress bar window says: Compiling NativeBoost-Core-IgorStasenko.36 The window title is "Syntax error" with a split text field. The top field contains: nbExternalStructure Fields parsing spec parseFields:byte The bottom field has a red error message embedded in this line: stream peek == #Invalid literal character ->; ifTrue: [ stream next ]. ]. Help?

Do not use the 2.2-generic ISO - it has many problems. Brief howto for KVM: 1. Create a virtual image for "hard disk" to use with KVM. Boot from the ISO image. For network adapter, specify "pcnet": -net nic,model=pcnet eeepc ISO does not have a driver for say rtl8139 2. After you see that the ISO boots, install on "hard disk". You will be given an option to create a fake sdcard: say Yes. SD card image will be allocated within the KVM's "hard disk". Select ext2 or ext3 as hard disk filesystem. 3. Install grub when asked. Later, if you need to edit grub boot menu, do this: In KVM, press Alt-LeftArrow to get to the root console. Mount the boot disk (unlike typical Linux, there is no boot volume mounted implicitly) mkdir /data/fs mount -t ext3 /dev/block/sda1 /data/fs vi /data/fs/grub/menu.lst umount /data/fs reboot 4. Install AndroZip application, otherwise you will not be able to download zip files 5. Install some file manager (2.3 seems to already have OpenIntents file manager installed) 6. Download the zipped Squeak image+changes+sources: http://squeakvm-tablet.googlecode.com/files/sqandr_pres.zip or whatever other image you would like Unzip the zipfile (tap on it; it will be unzipped under /mnt/sdcard/AndroZip) 7. Install CogDroid alpha mentioned above. When started, it will display usual list of images to boot. I got the following benchmark: 85,906,040 bytecodes/sec, 5,183,202 sends/sec. Emulator's /proc/cpuinfo says QEMU Virtual CPU version 0.9.1, 1986 MHz, 3973 bogomips. It runs under physical CPU: processor : 0 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 15 model : 75 model name : AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ stepping : 2 cpu MHz : 1999.903 cache size : 512 KB bogomips : 3999.80 8. Note on mouse buttons: Left click acts as screen tap (long click is long tap, e. g. on home screen use it to move/delete shortcut icons). CogDroid does not distinguish between long and short taps. Right click acts as the "Back" hardware button. So, to "Print-it": right click, see "Mouse yellow" popup, left click brings up menu, select Print. Middle click (press on the scroll wheel) acts as "Menu" button (to bring on the onscreen keyboard, but you can use the physical one ;) No way to do the Blue click (I use the "Forward" button on Pandigital, but it seems not to be typically available). So if you want to try Pharo, remap mouse buttons if possible. Hope this information is useful. Adjust to your virtualizer ;) Thanks.
