Profiling and delay accuracy

Hi Folks - For a long time now I had this feeling that MessageTally reports pretty bogus results in many situations without being able to precisely track down why this would be the case. Today I was looking at primitiveResponse() and, much to my surprise, noticed that the checkForInterrupts() that used to be there for years is gone (see Squeak3.6 for example which still has it). The sole reason for this check was to get both high delay accuracy and good profiling behavior. Consider this example: fc := FormCanvas on: Display. MessageTally spyOn:[ 1 to: 100 do:[:i| fc fillColor: Color white. fc printString. ]. ]. Using 3.6 this will be measured correctly as: **Tree** 87.5% {243ms} FormCanvas>>fillColor: |87.5% {243ms} GrafPort>>fillRect:offset: | 87.5% {243ms} GrafPort>>copyBits 12.5% {35ms} FormCanvas(Object)>>printString 12.5% {35ms} FormCanvas(Object)>>printStringLimitedTo: whereas the 3.10 reports it as **Tree** 99.6% {670ms} FormCanvas(Object)>>printString 94.9% {639ms} primitives 4.6% {31ms} FormCanvas(Object)>>printStringLimitedTo: I think you can see the problem and just imagine what this does to any cumulative results. I also wonder what that change does to platforms that don't have high-resolution asynchronous timers. This used to be the one place where we would catch timer changes at high resolution and unless the platform forces high resolution timer interrupts asynchronously (by resetting the interrupt counter) we must be loosing a lot in terms of delay accuracy. (it just so happens that the Windows VM *does* do asynchronous timer interrupts so I never noticed this but I'm very curious about the difference on Linux which typically still has pretty bad timer granularity). Any opinions? My feeling is that the timer check should go back in for all of the above reasons. At the very least a quickCheckForInterrupt() is required but I actually think putting the full check back in is worth it. Cheers, - Andreas

Joys of Squeak-dev image, VM Compiling on MacIntel and Spoon remote OtherBrowsing

MacPro OS X 10.4.9 Xcode 2.4.1 Squeak-dev-114-2, VMMaker 2.8b6.1, Squeak 3.8.15beta6U.app, and version 1657 of svn MacOS VM sources, and Spoon v2a12. Downloaded http://www.squeakvm.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/ trunk version 1657 for MacOS Ran squeak-dev-beta-114-2.image on Squeak 3.8.15beta6U.app Loaded VMMaker 3.8b6.1 from dev image Universes. Generated vm sources by following instructions in <http://www.squeakvm.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/trunk/platforms/Mac%20OS/vm/Doc…> Fought with Xcode wanting to use MacOSX10.3.9.sdk for ppc which was giving an error which was known and documented in the Readme. Finally figured out what Xcode wanted so built universal app just using 10.4.9 sdk. Couple issues: Exupery references remain in sqnamedPrims.h and sqPlatformSpecific.h from svn version 1657, I just commented them out. Notes said: Info-NPSqueak__Upgraded_.plist was to be found in the Developer directory. I could not find it so scammed a info.plist out of John's Squeak 3.8.15beta6U.app vm. Not sure what impact this has. And much, much diddling about figuring out various things... Finally got a build. It's a lot smaller (3.9MB) than John McIntosh's Squeak 3.8.15beta6U.app (8.1MB), and it looks like it is a PowerPC one but at least it runs. I'll look into the Xcode build process some more. Then: Replaced interp.c with Craig's interp.c for Spoon, rebuilt and got a VM with Spoon client stuff. Downloaded Spoon release 2a12. Moved a copy of Flow plugin from within Craig's naiad.app package into a plugins subdirectory where the new spoon client compatible MacIntel universal VM was run from. Followed Craig's Spoon instructions for loading niaid.st and niaid.pr into the 3.10 image (Squeak-dev-114-2) running on the new VM. Did the run spoon.app thing from Spoon.dmg (version 2a12), needs to be done twice if Safari is not running. Got Spoon processor running. Followed instructions again in the Spoon client and lo! Got OtherBrowser browsing the Spoon memory running on processor. Yay Craig! Who do i get to sign my certificate? :) Ken

oops to zero

I am attempting to zero all ooP pointers before writng an image to disk. I have added the following code to Interpreter-#writeImage: writeImageFile: imageBytes ... self adjustAllOopsBy: (0 - memory). self writeImageFileIO: imageBytes. self adjustAllOopsBy: memory. ... I managed to build a unix version of the vm with this change but it did not work as hoped. Starting an image saved with this vm crashes giving a bus error. any ideas? Clicking the platform button: UnixOSProcessPlugIn-#isResponsibleForThisPlatform calls Smalltalk osVersion rather than SmalltalkImage current.

patch: fix build problems on Solaris

Hi, This patch fixes 4 problems which prevented the VM from building on Solaris/SPARC. They shouldn't cause problems for other platforms (famous last words), so please would someone (Ian?) confirm this before checking in. The problems fixed by this patch are: 1. "sun" is already defined by some header or other in Solaris; I've changed it to s_un. 2. AF_LOCAL isn't defined on Solaris. W Richard Stevens' "Advanced programming in the Unix environment" says that AF_UNIX is more standard anyway. 3. Solaris' feof() call really wants a FILE*. 4. A missing prototype is added for sound_AvailableSpace(void) With this patch, the VM builds and runs fine if built with gcc-3.4.3. I've checked both the stock 3.9a-7024 image as well as the etoys image. (My motivation for this whole exercise is to fix the problems with audio under Solaris for my young daughter to use etoys: the first sound plays, but after that, no sounds ever play.) With gcc-4.2.1 and -O2, the VM won't even start up (complains about a missing vm-display-X11, even though it's there). With gcc-4.2.1 and no -O2, the VM starts, runs for a short while, and then cores with a bus error. gdb shows a corrupt stack. I'm about to build gcc-4.1.2 and give it a spin building the VM to try to track this down. But I do suspect bad code generation with gcc-4.2.1. accents in unix using non-english languages

Hi I've been trying to use accents and non-english characters (as the spanish ñ) with the vm, and up to now the behaviour is totally erratic and with some regretions. Maybe the developing is only be made in english and it's not being tested in other languages, maybe the documentation is not clear enough, or maybe I'm just useless... I brief: - Using vm 3.9-9 and below up to 3.7, the accents and other characters worked when setting the environment variable LC_ALL to 'es_ES' (using UTF-8 it didn't work). But with this image drag & drop of external files with accents in their names, or using the file list to open them didn't work (tested only with gif & jpeg files) - Using vm 3.9-12 I can open files with accents in their names using the file list, but drag & drop don't work. And now the keyboard doesn't work with accents or other non-english characters. After loading Bert Changeset (http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/vm-dev/2007-March/001046.html) I can write ñ and accents, but they are printed before the vowel instead of over the vowel. I. e: 'o instead of ó. I've wasted a lot of time playing with the -encoding, -pathenc and -textenc options without any success. So my questions are: - is this totally broken ? - is anybody else aware of this behaviour? - haven't I been able to find the right documentation to make it work and it should work fine? Regards. Module Version Numbers

Hi All, I had a discussion about plugin version numbers on reddit. http://programming.reddit.com/info/2s4eh/comments/c2t32y?context=5 . What do people think about adding version numbers to plugins like LargeIntegersPlugin class>>moduleNameAndVersion. Is this something we should be encouraging or do people really not see the benefit? Why does updating the root table use a red zone?

I'm not sure why noteAsRoot:headerLoc: uses a red zone. Why can't it just not update the root table? The root table is only used for incremental GCs and they will perform a full GC if the root table has overflowed? I'm asking because I had a bug in Exupery's version of this which I fixed by setting allocationCount on root table overflow. This appears to work but is there a good reason for the logic that the interpreter uses now? Bryce P.S. Building squeak vm with quartz on Mac

Hi, I build the VM for Mac using the following option: ../platforms/unix/config/configure --with-quartz --without-x Then I lunch the VM and get the error: could not find display driver vm-display-X11; either: - check that /usr/local/lib/squeak/3.9-12/vm-display-X11.so exists, or - use the '-plugins <path>' option to tell me where it is, or - remove DISPLAY from your environment. So I added the following option: ./squeak -vm display=Quartz ../sq3.10-7137dev07.08.1.image could not find module vm-display-Quartz How can I make it work? Thanks Mth

[OT] How to configure gcc on Mac (For VMMaker)

Hi, I am on Mac and I try to compile the VM for exupery. With Bryce we had some problems with gcc 4.0.1 (From Xcode) when the optimization was turn on. So now I would like to use gcc 4.2. From Mac port I have install gcc 4.2.1. Then I have changed the link /usr/bin/gcc to point to /opt/local/bin/ gcc-mp-4.2. But I have some linker error. I suppose that the linker is not well configure. Dose any one know how to configure gcc? Thanks Mth
