ANN: separate Squeak packages created for different Debian vesions

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Friends, To make sure that Squeak can be installed on every relevant Debian (GNU/Linux) version, I decided to create builds for all the three Debian versions: - - Sarge (known as "stable") - - Etch (known as "testing") - - Sid (known as "sid") It was not necessary because the same squeak binaries worked quite well on all of these Debian versions but it might have been confusing to add deb http://ftp.squeak.org/debian/ sid main deb-src http://ftp.squeak.org/debian/ sid main to `sarge' or `etch'. Additionally, the fact that the same set of prebuilt binaries worked well on all the three Debian versions is more coincidence than a rule. It is safer to distribute separate binaries because of the possible (non-)availability dynamic libraries against which our (Squeak virtual machine) binary is linked. This set of dynamic libraries in general differs from Debian version to Debian version. Details (what to write to your /etc/apt/sources.list file) are explained in http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/3616 I have tried to install and use the following three packages: - - squeak - - squeak-plugin - - seaside on all the three Debian versions: - - stable - - testing - - unstable I have noticed no problems. If anyone does, let me know. When new Debian version rotation occurs (testing becomes stable, unstable becomes testing and new unstable will be forked), those repositories will be properly rotated to reflect that too. New packages (if some will have to be created) and enhancements of the existing ones will be put to the `unstable' subdirectory. If Squeak relicensing to Apache License 2.0 succeeds, that will also open new possibilities. Exupery and slang/plugin

Looking at http://bugs.squeak.org/view.php?id=5331, it appears that problem lie in a primitive plugin. Obviously, this is a lot harder to maintain than smalltalk code. I need at least: - to load VMMaker - to know a bit of Slang - to know how to use VMMaker (from within Smalltalk) - to know how to compile C code produced Much more than a one hour squeak distraction... And for maintainers, to compile the plugins on each and every machine, update the sites etc... More boring than just uploading an image. Is it a dream that Exupery could magically do exactly the same job? (with a productivity increased x100) The idea for such a primitive not requiring external call, is that Exupery could be specially optimized to generate native binary code (instead of C code) based on same slang hints. Possible ? Just my 0.02€... Nicolas

Hello, I have been using the squeak-dev and squeak-web images from Damien Cassou the past few days and find them to be quite pleasant. However, I have a couple of concerns/questions/comments. 1) Is there a preference to disable CornerGrips on SystemWindows? I would rather resize with any frame as the handle. There is a preference to disable grips on panes, but not on the window as a whole. 2) Is there a preference to disable auto-completion of strings, comments, blocks, etc? I would rather not have it type a closing " for me when I type my initial ". Already there is a keyboard command in Smalltalk for me to put these in there if I want to. But I don't. :) 3) I want my left-arrows back :) No more underscores! Can I get these back? Or are they gone for good with 3.9? Please, say it ain't so. The Squeak booth at Smalltalk Solutions

Hi All, I am pleased to announce that Squeak will have its own booth at the Smalltalk Solutions show. I have just signed the booth agreement, and faxed it back to the it360.ca show management. I got the idea for a Squeak booth by attending the Toronto Linux Users Group pre-show meeting in February. I figured if they could get a free booth as a non-profit, then so ought we. So, this brings up a number of questions, and I'll try to answer them here. The booth will have a sign, a table, two computers, a pile of one-sheets, and 100 copies of Parasol magazine. Two weeks ago it360 show management asked for the Squeak logo. I contacted Tim Rowledge, and he furnished a quarter page, 300 dpi Tiff, which I forwarded to the show manager, so they could add our logo to the print material. I have forwarded this file to Brad Fuller of the Web Team, so that it might become permanently available. This file is too small for a sign, so I will contact Tim Rowledge for a vector file of some sort (SVG?) to take to a printer, and produce a sign. I'll say now that there are a few things that are going to cost a small amount, but I'm happy to pay that small sum, as I entertain the notion that I'm starting a business: web host, quarterly magazine, etc. The table, unless I can find something more suitable, will be this olive green number with the plastic surface that sits in front of me, and has been around since it looked fashionable in the 1970s. The two computers will be my iBook ... Actually it's one computer and two screens. I plan to take my iBook and have it run in tandem to my 17" LCD with a mini VGA-to-ADC adaptor. They will plug into the electricity I'll get from the hall organizers. The purpose of the two screens will be to run 5-minutes screen-capture Quicktime videos for people passing the booth to become hypnotized by. I will make a few, but since many people cannot be present at the show, then I invite people to send me a link to any 5-minute, silent, Quicktime video demo they happen to make. (cunnington(a)sympatico.ca) Please attach three paragraphs describing what we are seeing, as the booth people need to know what they are presenting. You can be at the show by proxy. The booth people so far are myself and a talented young professional Smalltalk programmer here in Toronto named William Harford. His company supports him in working in the booth, and so he is doing it as part of his job. That said, if anybody wants to do booth duty for an hour or two, so we can sit down, we would be delighted. The one-sheets are for the general public. They are single sheets with a series of links for getting started, and links to the purveyors of the demo videos, should there be any others aside from my own. The magazine, Parasol quarterly, the first issue, will be available free to attendees of Smalltalk Solutions. The authors who have agreed to write are Carl Gundel of Shoptalk Systems on his experience creating a website (runbasic.com) in Seaside, Yanni Chiu on how to get started using PostgreSQL with Squeak, John Magnifico of Blue Plane on what happen at the panel "Beyond Education" at the C5 conference in Kyoto in January, and Todd Blanchard on version readiness. If we run out at the show, you will be able to purchase it at parasolmag.com, after the show. I have an agreement from the Web Team that they will build a press releases page. I have six or seven banner gifs from it360.ca for the Web Team to choose from to put one at the top of the Smalltalk Solutions press release page to link to the it360.ca homepage. I¹ll forward them to Brad Fuller, who had the excellent idea of staring a media contact list. I hope links to the print and sign files from Tim Rowledge will be in this general vicinity for whomever wants them. Once we have created our first press release, then we can create more in future about changes to the license and the release of new versions of the virtual machine. Package Universe for Squeak 3.9: file for Tric-RefractoringBrowser is no longer there

hello, I was just trying to install Tric-RefractoringBrowser through the package universe in the squeak-dev image 95. Entry looks like this: Maintained by: Cees de Groot <cdegroot(a)gmail.com> Downloads from: http://de-1.tric.nl/%7Ecg/mc/Tric-RefractoringBrowser-CdG.7.mcz That URL does not work anymore. The error message is somewhat misleading: can't find EOCD position. I think it would be better to check if that is a zip file up front (first two bytes should be pk?). Cheers Matthias PS. Is there a preferred way of reporting problems with the package universe, or is it OK if I send it to teh whole list?

DEADLINE for Squeak contributor agreements: 1 May 2007

Hi all-- The Squeak Foundation board of directors and Viewpoints have decided to set a deadline for returning signed contributor agreements. The deadline is 1 May 2007. Any contribution not covered by a contributor agreement by that time, without further action by the contributor, will not be considered for future releases of Squeak produced by the Squeak Foundation. Please direct all questions about this to me (I'm the board member who is coordinating licensing). Is anyone using the Jabber Client from squeak map? I need to use it to communicate with another Jabber system, I downloaded it to a 3.9 image but I could not get it to work. I will appreciate any comment on this library. Thanks r.

Mac Carbon VM 3.8.15b5 pending

I've pushed out a 3.8.15b5 to address an error in the 3.8.15b4 VM with the new browser plugin interface and firefox. http://www.smalltalkconsulting.com/squeak.html I added three new features. One is SqueakDebug setting in the VM and browser plugin to enable you to print some diagnostics messages for the browser interface and module loading, I'll add more message in the future. The second is a SqueakQuitOnQuitAppleEvent flag that is used to quit the VM immediately if we get the quit event, which happens when a user logs out. Likely this is the wrong choice, still for people doing vertical apps you need someone to prevent the VM from cancelling the logout process. MIT's Scratch will use this feature. Finally I altered the logic when we look at the edit menu 'Quit do not save' If the application has used the VM's builtin feature to modify the mac menus then they might have changed the menu item from 'Quit do not save' to perform Foobar. 3.8.15b5 squeakBrowser-info.plist add SqueakDebug parm (1) debug msgs, (0) no debug msgs npsqueak.c streamline context usage a bit, make local var versus on structure add logic to print msgs based on info.plist sqMacMain.c Add SqueakDebug parm (1) debug msgs, (0) no debug msgs debug messages for browser interface, and module loading Add SqueakQuitOnQuitAppleEvent, true if we should quit immediately if operating system sends us quit msg, as a result of logout. Method comment says this method should be replaced... It has a unique sender CompoundTextConverter>>nextFromStream: Anyone having background knowledge to perform this clean-up ? Nicolas
