[ENH] Undeclared cleanup

Hi all, this tiny goodie removes all entries without references from Undeclared. Maybe this should be called after every file in. [ENH] new String modifier: String>>asPlural

Hi Folks. Here's the preamble from my changeset: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "OK. You could say that this is a silly crusade, but I like my Squeak messages to be in proper English (at least when the language you're using is English). I was messing around with the HangMan file-in and I got a walkback that had the following title: 'Error: HangManPhrases classs are not indexable'. I just couldn't stand the extra 's' on 'class', so I created a nifty new String method called asPlural and I modified the sender of the odd string to use the new String modifier. Take it or leave it, but I think this makes auto-generated text just a little easier to read." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I hope you find this new String modifier useful too. [BUG] Socket assumes connection in Linux

When I do: Socket initializeNetwork. s _ Socket new connectTo: (NetNameResolver addressFromString: '127.0.0.1') port: 2001. It always returns a connected socket even when there is no socket listening on 2001. (s waitForConnectionUntil: Socket standardDeadline) returns true right away. It is not until I attempt to send data that its status changes from connected to otherEndClosedButNotThisEnd and an error is raised. I am the only one having Linux socket problems? Can anyone repeat this problem or the problem I posted on March 23 entitled "[BUG]Socket waits unnecessarily in linux"? Polymorphism and language

I wonder if we're not asking the wrong question here. Language, it seems to me, is for expression. If we design a language (as opposed to allowing it to evolve) then we should have a goal for that language. What's the goal here? Although polymorphism is certainly an interesting capability shouldn't we be looking at the kinds of tasks we wish to perform? Would we demand an artist work in tempra when water color is what expresses the mood best? Personally I like the idea of small languages that do some things very very well. They are easy to learn because their concepts are clear. If languages can agree on ways to intermingle so I can write my image manipulation in one language and my text in another and my GUI in yet another -- and have them work together intimately and EASILY -- then I think we have a software system which is about expression first and language second. I'd love to easily, trivially, combine Smalltalk, Perl, Fortran, Obj-C and be able to easily explore other languages in this same context: it becomes easy to grow. Adam Bridge

I hope I'm not putting words in anyone's mouth, but many Smalltalkers end up with these perspectives: 1. Once you learn to use the Smalltalk code browsing tools, why would you ever want to use Netscape instead?! If you find an example, let's incorporate it into Squeak instead of bailing out to a web browser 2. Method and class comments, are fairly easy, and provide a good basic level of documentation. People should write them! Almost all classes should have a comment, and at least the canonical version of any method should have a comment. (Which can then be found by hitting implementers-of) 3. Having an 'examples' category for a class really helps, and it's easy to do. 4. We also need documentation about whole *packages*, eg "Programming in Raw Morphic". Unfortunately, this is harder to do. One more thing to put in the mix, is that Squeak is evolving. Documentation will be more important when it's figured out what exactly Squeak will *be*.... Anyway, documentation good, Javadoc bad. -Lex

I've got IE5 installed and probably winsock 2. I'd guess that there's some problem with your winsocket support. Do you have WinSockets 2? I have. I don't know whether Squeak requires them or not. In any case, it is a good idea to upgrade. [Yes, I'll shut up in a minute] PROPOSAL Currently, pretty printing doesn't keep the original assignment operator of the source but replaces it with "_". It should however have three modi * keep it (only applicable if source is available) * always use _ * always use := For fileout, another (two) options might be useful: * replace _ with :=, but don't touch any other formatting * replace := with _, but don't touch any other formatting this is more as a simple find/replace as it should of course not touch strings or symbols or literals. BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY ISSUES None, if we set the switch to the right value. ADVANTAGES ANSI conformance as well as conform with VisualWorks, Dolphin ST, VisualAge and probabyl also other Smalltalk systems. IMPLEMENTATION ISSUES AssignmentNode>>printOn:indent: is the place to change if printing. The switch should be added as class variable to Scanner or Parser though. Parser>>assignment: needs to be changed to keep the current assignment operator, as well as Scanner>>xColon and Parser>>expression. [ANN][ADDON] SmallInterfaces 2.0.0

Hi Squeakers, SmallInterfaces 2.0.0 is now available in Squeak. SmallInterfaces adds explicit interfaces to Smalltalk. This addition is useful for Design, Documentation, and Exploration. New features are: * class method interface * sealing (immutable) interface * synchronization between interfaces and conforming classes * ANSI Smalltalk v1.9 protocols as Interfaces. Original SmallInterfaces utilizes RefactoringBrowser to provide InterfaceBrowser. RB in Squeak is still in development. So this release also includes original GUI(InterfaceFinder) for Squeakers. SmallInterfaces 2.0.0 runs on Squeak 2.7. Due to the poor support for Dialog in MVC, I recommend to run in Morphic.
