WeakSet but no WeakIdentitySet?

Hello, i need to keep a bunch of CompiledMethods in WeakSet, but i am a bit afraid, that it wont work as i want to, because of CompiledMethod>>= implementation, because a code, which i currently writing doesn't changing a method's bytecode, but changing its trailer instead, and so, this could lead to undesirable effects.. If i could have a WeakIdentitySet... Meanwhile, i think i have nothing else, but just use a degenerate WeakIdentityKeyDictionary , with methods in keys and nils in values. :( -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko AKA sig.

veryDeepCopy, ImageSegments, and actionMaps

Any Object can have dependents whether or not it has an instance variable to keep track of them (these are kept in the DependentsFields class variable of Object). The only class that keeps its own dependents is Model. Any Object can have an actionMap. These are supplied by EventManager class by default, and are stored in the ActionMaps class variable of EventManager. The only class that keeps its own action maps is Morph. When we veryDeepCopy an object we also copy the global dependents (see DeepCopier>>fixDependents). However, we don't copy the actionMap in those cases where it's held by the EventManager class. When we file out an object that uses DependentsFields out into an ImageSegment, we also file out the dependents (see ImageSegment>>dependentsSave:) if it's in a project. We do this by adding a project parameter called #GlobalDependentsInProject. However, we don't file out the actionMap in those cases where it's held by the EventManager class. My question is this: should we fix these behaviors (copying and serialization) to include these "global action maps" just like we already include the "global dependents"? Announcement: Spelling services

Hi Once upon a time, John M. McIntosh built a spellchecker plugin for the MacVM and there was a fileout that added a spelling service class to use it from Squeak. We have added code to provide the same API (for now) to windows and linux users that have ispell (or a compatible program, like aspell) installed on their systems using system callouts. A metacello configuration is available from the MetacelloRepository on Squeaksource, ConfigurationOfSpellingServices. The development repository is at http://www.hpi.uni-potsdam.de/hirschfeld/squeaksource/SpellingServices.html, the repo has global read+write, so if anybody finds this useful and has changes, feel free to commit to that repository. -Tim

find original change set

Hi, I was trying to use, in VersionsBrowser, the feature "find original change set" for a method. In old versions (3.8 and earlier) this work fine. But in 3.10 and 3.9 don´t. I followed the sequence and detect the problem at MethodChangeRecord-noteNewMethod: noteNewMethod: newMethod "NEVER do this. It is evil." currentMethod _ nil. should be: noteNewMethod: newMethod "NEVER do this. It is evil." currentMethod _ newMethod. This way work as I expect. But with that comment I understand was intentioned. What is the problem with this? I can´t see it... I'm the devil? Thanks, Javier

Dear Squeakers, I have always had a hard time learning anything until I had a project to do it around. Well that time has come. I need to write an app. that will let me run one application inside another. I would like to have a cad type app. running in a window and then be able to over lay that cad app. with another app. that lets me put hot spots on the cad app. These hot spots will have the ability to show a colored outline around their perimeter. That outline we would like to be able to turn on and off or make blink. The purpose of the hot spot is to train people how to use the cad app. by showing them where to pick menu items and enter data etc. So the whole things runs like this, we start the cad app. and the tutor app. The tutor app. step by step shows the student where and what bottoms to pic and where and what data to enter. As they enter etc. the app. actually functions and they are able to create in the cad app. Kind of a training wheel effect. Can any one tell whether or not I could do this in Squeak and kind of help me do it. I do have a nephew who is a good programmer but has never used Squeak of small Talk and I would like to get him help me do this app. start using Squeak. Can any one point in the right direction? I would like to do the same thing for learning Squeak. Once we learn how to do it for the cad app. I will do it for the Squeak community and make it free. Sincerely, Chuck Smith

Installing Filetree

It contains PEG parser generation facilities, which I assume might use XTreams. If not the PEG parser stuff could be separated. Nikolay, what you write is interesting but too terse for me to understand. If I understand you right you mean that OMeta goes beyond the PEG parser in XTreams and PetitParser (L. Renggli) and Helvetia (L Renggli). In which ways does OMeta go beyond these other tools? AND: Of course very welcome that you run for the board. --Hannes

Two things about the implementation: - using #isOctetCharacter is not good enough. When I wrote ascii, I meant the 7-bit US-ASCII characters. Metacello and Squeak4.4

I have a small 3 class package (Metacello-Base[1]) that I would hope could be included in the Squeak4.4 release. Of the 3 classes, the Metacello class is a stub class for the Metacello Scripting Api[2], that will bootstrap Metacello _if_ you use the scripting api. I am promoting the scripting api as the cross platform way to use Metacello. Instead of seeing install scripts fly by that look like this: Gofer new package: 'ConfigurationOfSeaside30'; squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; load. ((Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfSeaside30) version: #stable) load. (with the caveat that Installer should be used for Squeak)...the install scripts will look like this: Metacello new configuration: 'Seaside30'; version: #stable; squeaksource: 'MetacelloRepository'; load. The same script will "do the right thing" on all three supported platforms (Squeak, Pharo, GemStone), presuming that the class Metacello is present in the base images:) I've recently released a preview version[4] and am actively collecting feedback. I would think that I can finalize the visible portion of the scripting api by September... I've been ensuring that the metacello preview release is functional on Squeak all along and I am currently running CI builds against Squeak4.3 using travis ci[5]. Moving forward I would add Squeak4.4 to the list of platforms for CI and publish updates to the Metacello-Base pacakge as needed. The class comments for each of the classes provides basic documentation for using Metacello so I think that Metacello-Base is a clean and small presence for Metacello and will enable the use of "cross-platform install scripts for Metacello."
