[ENH] Undeclared cleanup

Hi all, this tiny goodie removes all entries without references from Undeclared. Maybe this should be called after every file in. [ENH] new String modifier: String>>asPlural

Hi Folks. Here's the preamble from my changeset: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "OK. You could say that this is a silly crusade, but I like my Squeak messages to be in proper English (at least when the language you're using is English). I was messing around with the HangMan file-in and I got a walkback that had the following title: 'Error: HangManPhrases classs are not indexable'. I just couldn't stand the extra 's' on 'class', so I created a nifty new String method called asPlural and I modified the sender of the odd string to use the new String modifier. Take it or leave it, but I think this makes auto-generated text just a little easier to read." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I hope you find this new String modifier useful too. [ENH] SerialPort, remember them?

Hi: I've been playing with serial ports on my Powerbook G3 and I discovered some not so nice actions in class SerialPort. If the port is in use elsewhere, trying to open it gets a Primitive Error. I'd rather have my code get back some indication that the port didn't open, so I made some small mods to SerialPort, which are attached. Basically, primitives used during open answer nil if they fail, and the open method answers nil also. Dave _______________________________ David N. I don't think you'll see a lot of improvement unless you go a step further. What I tried was re-ordering the objects so that they're arranged by class and by size (and for some others even by intrinsic ordering such as strings). This is important because LZ compressors won't look beyound certain distances (and also the smaller the distance, the better the compression). Here's one thing you could try to see a bit of this effect: Create an image segment that contains all Strings in the image in lexicographical order. Write this IS; try to compress it. Now dump the hash bits and try again. Cheers, - Andreas

It's not so much building the VM, VMMaker just drops the files you need to build the VM somewhere. SyntaxHighlighting on 3.0

When I was using version 2.7 I used SyntaxHighlighting to highlight my code. I upgraded to 3.0 and loaded it into my image. It worked ok for a while but not it gives me a mnu #writeOnScan: Is there a version of SyntaxHighlighting compatible with 3.0? Or some other package that is similar that I could use? [BUG] newest updates to 3.1alpha seem to break all browsers if whisker 0.92 installed

Grrr, sorry for the mangled subject in the prior message. Hope this makes it to the bug list. Hello folks, I upgraded to the newest alpha updates on both Linux and WIn98, starting from both a stock 3.0final and a 3.1alpha3910b set of changes and images. All combinations seem to break all browsers if I have Whisker 0.92 installed before the updates. If I install Whisker afterwards, I get the same debug error during the update: The Debug reports: False(Object)>>doesNotUnderstand: Preferences class>>addNonExistingPreferences:catagory:default:ballonHelp: WhiskerBrowser class>>initializePreferences WhiskerBrowser class>>initialize UndefinedObject>>DoIt BTW, is there a way to capture the top pane of the debug window/error handler window to a file, since my mail debug report seems not to work as I am behind a firewall? RE: Squeak for iPAQ

Part of the slowdown may be the cost of getting bits to the screen via the normal WinCE interface. Yoshiki Ohshima found that using the windows games API gave a huge speedup in display update speed. Of course, that is only part of the reason that Morphic feels slow, and you may already be using a VM with Yoshiki's display code. Another possible source of sluggishness is floating point operations, which must be emulated on the StrongARM. Finally--and this is real stab in the dark-- there may be an unexpected interaction between Windows CE and event processing. You might see if an old 2.7 or 2.8 image feels any faster when running Morphic. We've been fairly impressed with the raw computational power of the iPaq, but we're not using Morphic on it. Nor are we doing Squeak development on the iPaq. We develop on a desktop or laptop and just move the image over to the iPaq for testing. -- John At 2:40 AM -0400 5/11/01, Noel J. A comment in it says, "Note: Don't bypass this method even if bytesToShift is zero until the RootBit problem has been fixed in the appropriate places", and the code to shortcut the method when bytesToShift = 0 is commented out. I don't see anything new in my .changes file, so I am assuming the comment is current. I don't know what the RootBit problem is, but the section of code that would be bypassed if the comment were removed is the code that adjusts all of the references, and also clears the RootBit for each object. So if the comment is still correct, then even if the image reloads at the same place, don't you need to still clear each object's RootBit? Or did I misunderstand your point, above? --- Noel
