[ENH] new String modifier: String>>asPlural

Hi Folks. Here's the preamble from my changeset: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "OK. You could say that this is a silly crusade, but I like my Squeak messages to be in proper English (at least when the language you're using is English). I was messing around with the HangMan file-in and I got a walkback that had the following title: 'Error: HangManPhrases classs are not indexable'. I just couldn't stand the extra 's' on 'class', so I created a nifty new String method called asPlural and I modified the sender of the odd string to use the new String modifier. Take it or leave it, but I think this makes auto-generated text just a little easier to read." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I hope you find this new String modifier useful too. [BUG] Socket assumes connection in Linux

When I do: Socket initializeNetwork. s _ Socket new connectTo: (NetNameResolver addressFromString: '127.0.0.1') port: 2001. It always returns a connected socket even when there is no socket listening on 2001. (s waitForConnectionUntil: Socket standardDeadline) returns true right away. It is not until I attempt to send data that its status changes from connected to otherEndClosedButNotThisEnd and an error is raised. I am the only one having Linux socket problems? Can anyone repeat this problem or the problem I posted on March 23 entitled "[BUG]Socket waits unnecessarily in linux"? Polymorphism and language

I wonder if we're not asking the wrong question here. Language, it seems to me, is for expression. If we design a language (as opposed to allowing it to evolve) then we should have a goal for that language. What's the goal here? Although polymorphism is certainly an interesting capability shouldn't we be looking at the kinds of tasks we wish to perform? Would we demand an artist work in tempra when water color is what expresses the mood best? Personally I like the idea of small languages that do some things very very well. They are easy to learn because their concepts are clear. If languages can agree on ways to intermingle so I can write my image manipulation in one language and my text in another and my GUI in yet another -- and have them work together intimately and EASILY -- then I think we have a software system which is about expression first and language second. I'd love to easily, trivially, combine Smalltalk, Perl, Fortran, Obj-C and be able to easily explore other languages in this same context: it becomes easy to grow. Adam Bridge

[GOODIE] X11R6 BDF Fonts, round 1

Attached is a changeset containing some of the X11R6 75dpi fonts, converted from BDF format. They haven't been tweaked yet. They appear to be quite license-clean. I think someone should stare at the Lucida copyright information to confirm this. In any case, they don't infect your image. Thanks to Andrew Greenberg for a) pointing out that FontSets work and b) providing text for reuse. :-) By the way, if you want to ship FontSets through changesets, it looks like the best thing to do is change FontSet class>>acceptsLoggingOfCompilation to always return true while you're packaging. "Change Set: BDFFontSets-nop Date: 31 January 2000 Author: Jay Carlson Squeak fonts converted from fonts in BDF format distributed with X11R6.3. This fileIn installs several FontSets converted from some of the 75dpi Bitmap Distribution Format fonts shipped with X11R6.3. The fonts were downloaded and converted to StrikeFont .sf2 format with the BDFFontReader changeset. Their copyright information is included in the class comment for each FontSet. On fileIn, the postscript installs these FontSets as Squeak TextStyles, and thus may be selected by using control-K in any text window. These fonts currently have an underbar instead of a left arrow for the _ character. Also, this changeset only contains basal emphasis. These X11 fonts were designed for use with hand-tuned bold and italic/oblique companions (not included), so Squeak's automatically-derived bold and italic attributes will not look good. Bold emphasis looks somewhat better with the application of the StrikeFontBoldFix changeset. " Jay

[A clarification -- when we at Squeak Central (SqC) refer to "MVC", we are usually referring to the "old ST-80 viewing structures" and their control regime (View/Ctlr, SSView/Ctlr, and ControlManager). This is too little and too much at the same time: it takes valuable space in the object header and it is insufficient for large IdentitySets or -Dictionaries. Therefore how about ditching this field alltogether and reimplementing IdentitySets as arrays sorted by oop ? Lookup should be reasonably fast using binary search. Since the garbage collector only shifts objects but does not shuffle them, the sort order would not be affected by compaction. Become operations would necessitate resorting of affected sets however. IdentityDictionaries could be built using parallel arrays for keys and values. Insertion and deletion might become slow for very large sets.
