complex arithmetic and mathematical functions

Hello, i propose some extensions to Complex class. Rationale: First, a convenient creation message: (a i: b) is same as (a + b i) except it will not involve any operation, coercion etc... (Try operating on long collections of Complex) It produces code much shorter than (Complex real: a imaginary: b) found everywhere inside Complex class. Think of (a@b) and (Point x: a y: b). Then: (aComplex i) has same meaning as (aNumber i) : it is multiply by (1 i). This one does exist in VW AT-Numerics for example and seems obvious. Then, some functions arcCos arcSin arcTan argCosh argSinh argTanh arcTan: tanh I also modified cos, sin, cosh and sinh only for having things like (2 + 0 i) sin imaginary isZero Most definitions were taken from netlib SLATEC FORTRAN library. I also propose these extensions in Number: sinh cosh tanh argSinh argCosh argTanh (some exist in Complex but not in Number...). Further work: put some optional primitive in Float... I also propose adding a new exception DomainError. This can enable trapping (-1 sqrt) and answering a complex result for example. (Further work to connect this exception if accepted) Then a #absSecure like there is a #divideFastAndSecureBy: will avoid overflow/underflow in intermediate results. Shouldn't these two become the default implementation ? Then a #conjugated is missing. Should we implement a (conjugated ^self) in Number ??? Last, raisedTo: and raisedToInteger: have to be implemented again in Complex... This will be the case for a lot of arithmetic classes. (Quaternion Matrix Polynomial...) I see two better solutions 1) make an ArithmeticValue common superclass like in VW 2) use Traits to factor common protocol for commutative rings, fields, etc... What are your plans about it ? Particularly when rectangels were mixing with rendering Transformation morphs. Part of the solution would be to have more choices particular ceiling and floor options for rectangles (an by extention Points.) I was headed in that direction as I attempted fixes to the errors. If a set of vocabularies exist that would also make squeak more compatable with other smalltalks and we have all the necessary permissions to include them. Then I say squeak could use them. Hello, I come from VisualWorks world and am new to squeak environment. I spent a lot of time searching where i could change author initials that were asked to me the first time i fed the browser, untill i found the item in Help menu. Would not the changes menu just above be a more logical place ? By the way, is this the right place for this kind of minor suggestion ? I have some more general questions that will be illustrated using truncation and round off example. I noticed that the #roundTo: was implemented only in Number Collection and Duration, while #truncateTo: was also in Point and Rectangle. #roundUpTo: is only in Number (though ceiling is defined in Number Collection and Duration). #roundDownTo: is nowhere at all, probably because no one ever used it. Complex has no mean to rounding. Who makes decisions about where to implement such general purpose messages ? Should Squeak search a better uniformity of library at expense of a bigger image or reduce the kernel only to messages that are used ? (but then lot of people would implement the same extension, me first). If the response is uniformity, i can provide code for completing that as soon as i find how to publish... Are you interested ? I have already published a SYSEXT-rounding in VW Cincom public repository, because it will be a prereq of some other packages. In VW, I had chosen the names #ceilingTo: and #floorTo:, because i found that it had a certain symmetry with the way other messages were formed : truncated -> truncateTo:, rounded -> roundTo:, ceiling -> ... But maybe ceilingTo: is bad english compared to roundUpTo: , a french shouldn't decide that... My question is who decides ? Shouldn't be an agreement found with other dialect makers ? is it ANSI stuff ? Or maybe no use to discuss so long each and every message, one decides and the others follow ? An intermediate between central decision at dialect level and co-operation at language level might be the right answer. My user point of view is that Squeak VW Dolphin VisualAge Smalltalk/X etc... should either discuss more about the kernel libraries or borrow more from each other and do some sort of cross dialect refactoring... Because it will ease porting from a Smalltalk dialect to another. I would like to develop freeware, but i feel that maintaining several dialect dependent versions of a general purpose library is a bad situation... Smalltalk has not been invented to fall back to the C code #ifdef _MSCVER nightmare, has it ? As a commercially paying Smalltalk user in a previous job, I can tell you that it has also been a brake on using Smalltalk, because it is neither a good situation being bound to a vendor specific environment and library. And the cost of porting is high. If i want to reduce the cost by porting some base library in another vendor image, there will certainly be some licensing problems, though i am pretty sure every body do it... My advice to commercial Smalltalks: forget about copywriting and patenting libraries, you are killing yourself. Maybe better concentrate on VM optimizations, services, or i don't know, you'll have to invent... And please do favour inter dialect library exchange, you all are to win of it. Don't be on the defensive, behind a Maginot line, you're dead, trust a french. I am sure Squeak team agree since non commercial. But maybe i am out of the scope of this list again ?

Ah, 'tis the Emerald Isle, to be sure. Trinity's a lovely place, but I suggest getting out of Dublin and sampling some of the countryside. Ask the locals, but I'll mention Powerscourt, Newgrange in the Boyne Valley (and Knowth and Dowth - you get a better picture if you see all three). Go a bit further and you get the Irish midlands (peat-fired power stations eg. at Shannonbridge), the Shannon itself, Clonmacnoise... and some quiet pubs with three locals who look like they've been hewn out of the peat themselves, drinking Guinness and glaring at you suspiciously from under the flat caps as you walk in. I'm actually nearer to you than you are to the South of Ireland... I'm just over the Irish Sea in Manchester, England :-). If you ever want a break in a much less civilised country, walk-on fares to the HSS (operates out of Dun Laoghaire, the DART will get you there) or the good ol' vehicle ferry from the North Wall of Dublin harbour are pretty cheap. That gets you to Holyhead (right on the north-west tip of Wales), from which Crewe, Chester, Liverpool and Manchester are all easily reachable by coach or train, and the rest of mainland Britain isn't too much further. Feel free to contact me if you want to meet up. Gigs permitting, I'll happily buy you a pint or three of decent English bitter :-). I'd love to come back over to Ireland, but personal circumstances don't really permit that at the moment. Maybe next year... - Peter

MC repository info?

Hi I would like to know if there is a timeout for the MC repository info? I'm working on 3.9 and publishing a lot and from time to time I have to reenter the info for the repository and I did not change them. Stef

handling translation catalog

Hi 6719 - contains TextAnchor fixes of lukas - fix underscores in some packages (more to come) this is why this is slow to load - French mac os x emergency halt - Extracted ReleaseBuilder from SystemSupport Andreas, Juan pay attention that I had to integrate his changes that were touching several packages at once, so I changed the Graphics, MultiLingual, Morphic, MorphicExtra packages The image is on the ftp. Attachment access problem due to liststest. instead on lists. in url

Hi all, Edgar has been uploading pictures and when I click on the attachement url I get a not found message. For example: Name: Picture 1.jpg Type: image/jpeg Size: 69803 bytes Desc: not available Url : http://liststest.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/squeak-dev/attachments/2006… The problem was with liststest when I changed the url to http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/squeak-dev/attachments/20060203… The picture came up in my browser.
