Squeak running as windows service behaves differently

Hello, Maybe someone more experienced with windows vm could explain why squeak.exe eats 100% of CPU when Squeak is run as windows service. Same script runs without problems in normal mode. Digging in the past I found John M McIntosh guess about the reason of this problem: http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/squeak-dev/2004-September/08228… but problem seems to be platforms specific and I'm not experienced changing VM. Has anyone else been bitted by this since? Should I try another sockets implementation / image (e.g. squeakland) / VM? Details: We work on bridge that accepts SOAP request from Oracle and executes com-method via dot-net bridge. Dot net bridge uses separate exe to communicate with .NET. Squeak uses sockets to communicate with that process. All is fine until I run squeak as a service. When service started, after third of such a call squeak.exe eats CPU 99%-100%. While squeak remains responsive (accepts SOAP calls), tallying CPU usage when CPU is 100% with ProcessBrowser tallyCPUUsageFor: 10 shows nothing: 1 % is taken by UI, and rest is taken by idle process. Squeak 3.8, VM 3.7.1, Windows 2000 workstation, service pack 4. p.s Squeak as a service did test 4-5 times slower :(. I wonder why. Thank you, -- Vaidotas Didžbalis

But the core of VW-NumericCollections is in the Squeak base image (you can do arithmetics on collections like adding a number to it...). So this is why I was proposing you integrate it. cumulativeProduct and cumulativeSum really sound mathematical package specific. But in my opinion, the others (sumOf: maxOf: count: ...) are some very general purpose messages. You can find such in matlab, F95, ... They might be used anywhere you have math in squeak (squeak has a lot of math especially but not only a lot of geometry). I browsed the senders of #inject:into: just to check how it was used: - it is used for concatenating strings or other collections with variants #, #nextPutAll: #addAll: (the original posting on this thread) - it is used in place of anySatisy: (inject:false into: ...need refactoring ?) - it is used to sum things (my proposition sumOf:) - it is used to get max or min (my proposition maxOf:) - it is used to count things (my proposition count:) - in very rare case it does some other thing (packing string...) Example: DependentsArray>>size ^self inject: 0 into: [ :count :dep | dep ifNotNil: [ count _ count + 1 ]] would be ^self count: [:each | each notNil] I take a more academic example, because i do not really understand this one above (overwriting a block temporary ? and what ifNil ? either it is broken or i will learn something...) addOtherMorphsTo: aMorph ... variableCount _ heights inject: 0 into: [:count :ea | ea = 0 ifTrue: [count + 1] ifFalse: [count]]. would be: variableCount _ heights count: [:each | each = 0]. Which code is clearer, which one do you prefer ? Today, inject:into: is obvious to me, but in my beginning Smalltalk days i can remember it was not. And i still prefer the second form for clarity. It is much more expressive. Give a try to these messages and see how they spread into code, and how well you would refactor those inject:into: and surely a lot of open-coded do loops... If you think they are useless simply because inject:into: exist, then Collections are plenty of messages that are useless: reject: is select: [:e | (...) not] anySatisy: is contains: allSatisfy: is (contains: [:e | (..) not]) not (that is really how i would have programmed things before implementing my first proto #all:). However, if you prefer a separate package, maybe you are right, you are responsible for managing the growth of the base image. But in this case, i suggest you might better remove Complex or other things that does not seem to be used at all (see senders of #i and class refs of Complex). Sorry for being so long, but some decisions must be argued -------------------------------------------------------

B3DRotation negated problem

I was looking for Quaternion in squeak and found B3DRotation. fine ! But the B3DRotation>>negated did hurt me. This message is more than questionnable: it is mathematically incorrect. Of course, if you think of the rotation vector angleInRadians*axis, then the opposite rotation vector is either (-angleInRadians)*axis or angleInRadians*(-axis), so far so good. What if you multiply your rotations: q negated * q, then you obtain the unitary quaternion (1 + 0 i + 0 j + 0 k). If you multiply any B3DRotation with this unit quaternion, you get your original B3DRotation. It is neutral to * operation. This is definition of the reciprocal, not the negated. if you could add q to q "negated", you would not get zero (+ can be trivially defined in quaternions as in complex). You cannot do that operation internally with unit quaternion, but you can with general quaternions. True quaternion negated is (-a -b i - c j - d k). There you see how bad it is. In term of rotation matrix, this operation is the transposed, in term of Quaternion this is the conjugated (more exaclty the conjugated negated in your implementation), and in term of unit qaternion it is the reciprocal. Yes but the opposite of my rotation vector ? Well... try to sum two rotation vectors like 90° around [0 0 1] and then 90° around [1 0 0], and tell me what do you get ? certainly not the composition of the two rotations... The sum of rotation vectors have no meaning in term of rotation except if same axis. So forget about the negated, call it either reciprocal or conjugated or transposed or schtroumph but please not negated. Who will change that ?

See joined a simple Quaternion extension that just do arithmetics and better understand how negated should be defined, if it should be. (This Quaternion has nothing usefull compared to B3DRotation).

Radiobutton and checkbox in Morph?

An interesting presentation and discussion

...can be found over at Lambda: http://lambda-the-ultimate.org/node/1277 The presentation is from a game developer and was quite interesting to look through (the slides are pretty self explanatory). It would be very interesting to hear the reactions on these issues from a Squeak perspective - like what do the Croqueteers say and what do you say Bryce? If a future Squeak could be interesting for this segment (game dev) then things would really heat up. regards, Göran

isComplex name is bad

I do not like the name Complex. I would prefer ComplexNumber. Why ? see implementors of isComplex. There are several ones. The meaning of the message is (isKindOf: Complex) in Object and in Complex. But it has other meaning elsewhere (like is something complicated). And some class can be complicated but not KindOf: Complex... a better message would be isComplexNumber as stated in this comment: Object>>isComplex "Answer true if receiver is a Complex number. False by default." ^ false That does not matter, these classes won't ever mix might you say. Imagine i want to implement some ComplexMatrix. Shouldn't it answer true to isComplex ? Then i will do arithmetic with ComplexNumber and this will fail because both class will mis-interpret isComplex as being ComplexNumber or ComplexMatrix... The right names are definitely isComplexNumber and isComplexMatrix. Who has the authority and the will to change that ?

mac carbon experimental vm 3.8.10b7

If some people grabbed an experimental carbon vm, say 3.8.10b6 or earlier from my file servers you should be aware there is a bug that causes the finder information to be trashed when you save an image. This information can be restored by two different methods: a) Use the unix cat command cat "imageinquestion.image" > "recovered.image" Then open the "recovered.image" and save your image with a 3.8.9 carbon VM to restore the file type information. The quotes are used to ensure embedded special characters or spaces in an image name are interpreted correctly. b) Using the mac developer SetFile command that is installed by installing the developer tools ( or email me for a copy). Likely you need to perform /DeveloperTools/SetFile -a avbstclinmedz imageinquestion.image Also see GetFileInfo, and of course the man pages As an example a example image shows this flag usage. /Developer/Tools/GetFileInfo build-5-47.20.image file: "build-5-47.20.image" type: "STim" creator: "FAST" attributes: avbstclinmedz created: 01/25/2006 21:12:42 modified: 02/06/2006 17:23:22 I'll post a 3.8.10b7 Mac Carbon VM with the error fix later today. [Morphic] Proposal for unify different pictures dictionary

Juan: If at some point we wish unload Etoys, we must keep the pictures saved in StandardScriptingSystem formDictionary. In image also exists the ImageImports dictionary. I don't know if somewhere exists other like this. I suggest collect all and unify.
