* apologies for multiple copies * Call For Papers for the sixth annual workshop on Implementation, Compilation, Optimization of Object-Oriented Languages, Programs and Systems (ICOOOLPS) to be held at ECOOP 2011 in Lancaster, UK on July 26th 2011 http://www.icooolps.info/ Overview: Computer programming languages, especially Object-Oriented languages, are pervasive and play a significant role in computer science and engineering life and sometime appear as ubiquitous and completely mature. However, despite a large number of works, there still is a clear need for solutions for efficient implementation and compilation of OO languages in various application domains ranging from embedded and real-time systems to desktop systems. The ICOOOLPS workshop thus aims to address this crucial issue of optimization, mainly but not only in OO languages, programs and systems. It intends to do so by bringing together researchers and practitioners working in the field of implementation and optimization of programming languages. Its main goals are identifying fundamental bases and key current issues pertaining to the efficient implementation, compilation and optimization of OO languages, and outlining future challenges and research directions. An expected output of this workshop is a synthesis identifying fundamental bases and key current issues pertaining to the efficient implementation and compilation of OO languages, in order to spread them further amongst the various computing systems. It is also intended to extend this synthesis to encompass future challenges and research directions in the field of OO languages implementation and optimization, as well as non-OO languages. Marvin and Cog

Marvin seemed to require some extra prims, but I haven't been able to establish why -- if anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated. I'm curious: some of the same techniques that make Self performant are present in Cog; what's the remaining tech gap look like? Is it reasonable to think about using Cog to run an object system built around prototypes rather than classes, or is the class assumption baked into the object engine in a way that would require a lot of working around? I am not a VM guru (obviously) by any stretch of the imagination, and am as such quite wary of making assumptions, but I'd really like to play with bootstrapping a prototype based object model in my nice familiar Squeak environment. Frankly there are some things I'd drop from Self and keep from Squeak. The approach I've seen wherein one has a class for every object bugs me somewhat in that it can confuse the hell out of the next programmer, who is likely expecting regular class oriented behavior whilst sitting in front of a class based system. This has been an issue in my work life with Ruby's "eigenclasses" which are pretty much that. I'd like to experiment with a prototypal model of my own instead, and am looking to scope the challenge. Any advice will be met warmly!

Fix for UUID library crashes

Ian, Eliot: The attached platforms/unix/plugins/UUIDPlugin/sqUnixUUID.c is a fix for the UUID library crash bug, provided by Levente Uzoni. While I cannot confirm that it prevents crashes (since I have never encountered one myself), I can confirm that it builds and runs and that the proposed solution looks entirely plausible. Actually, it's way more that just plausible: This one gets my vote for Best Creative Hack Of The Year. Thank you Levente! Cog builds on Hudson

I modified the Cog config made by Marcus to sync with my changes in scripts. https://pharo-ic.lille.inria.fr/hudson/view/Cog/ i also added a new target for building - Stack VM (except that it not works now, because Hudson can't pick up the built artifacts despite VM built successfully -- lets wait for Marcus to fix that , since i'm not expert in Hudson :) ). Adding another two is also a piece of cake - just copy existing configuration and change destination directory and configuration class used for generating sources and build config. The script i made for Hudson can work even for macs, it takes 3 arguments: - git repo url - working subdirectory name where to place everything - cmake configuration class name (which build to perform) that's all you need to build VM from scratch using Hudson -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko AKA sig.

It is really weird.. i using same sources for everything, except in one case i use usual build steps, as in HowToBuild file, while in another i using cmake configs. Squeak on an Android tablet, first impressions

Hi, I finally got an actual tablet (Pandigital Novel 9") with Android 2.0, and tried to install the apk file from the SqueakVM project repo. I haven't tried to rebuild it yet. It runs. Not to say it is very fast (CPU is 800 Mhz), but seems usable. Application window size seems to be fixed, and does not seem to be expandable. When the tablet changes orientation, Squeak seems to somehow react to it, but previous window remains on screen overlaid by the new window.. Save and Quit does not work: error pops up that disk is full. I inserted a 8G SD-card, and it is mainly empty. When Quit is selected in the menu, and I answer No to the "Save changes before quitting" popup, nothing happens, Squeak continues running. In fact, I couldn't stop it at all, it shows up in the list of running apps even after "force stop" in applications manager. Anyway, great job. I realize this port is incomplete, but I am practically interested to improve it, so will try to rebuild it and make modifications. Is anybody else working on it these days? Thanks. PS Unlike mentioned in the recent comment for the Issue 1, holding Menu button does not bring soft keyboard. BTW I wass thinking about writing a Morph which displays buttons with letters or digits, and sends key events to whatever ActiveHand keyboardFocus points to. Works on PC; would it be an easier way to enable keyboard input independently of the problem with Android keyboard? PPS I think a new theme is needed for mobile screens, with larger controls, and maybe additional buttons for "doit" and "inspect" on window titlebar.
