[COG] I am having trouble running headless.

Hi Eliot, I goto cygwin and create a simple script test.st. I run the following command: ./Cog-17.exe -headless Cog.image test.st It opens up the UI. Thanks, Rob

Folks - I feel like I've been thoroughly misunderstood in the recent discussion about using a distributed version control system. Let me try to make my point as clearly as possible: First of all I don't *care* whether to use a "distributed" VCS or not. Is that clear? I really don't. What I care about for a version control system is how easy it is to use and how well it integrates with the system I use. Having been clear on the initial point, my concern in this discussion is about *why* people seem to be excited about using an DVCS. What I'm hearing is "great, now we can fork" instead of "great, this will make it easier to contribute". There is a difference between a "branch" and a "fork". A "branch" is something where you (usually temporarily) diverge from the main line in order to make the original product better. A "fork" is a (usually permanent) divergence from the main line WITHOUT the intention to make the original product better. For example, Cog is a branch, Pharo is a fork. Branches are *great*. Branches allow us to explore directions without destabilizing the main development. Forks are *terrible*. Forks split communities, force duplication of efforts, and split mindshare that would better be spent on making the system better for everyone. As a consequence, when I hear people being excited about the ability to "fork" I am starting to ask myself what we can do to avoid the need for forks. Forks don't just happen - there are events that lead up to it and I am trying to understand if there's something we can do to alleviate the perceived need for forking. I'm not trying to tell you that you *must* host your private experiments on Squeak.org - I am asking to find out what kind of frustration exist in our current development process, and what we can do to address them. Hi All, I've updated http://ftp.squeak.org/Cog with new source, OpenSourceCog-oscog.16.tar.gz/VMMaker-oscog.16.mcz that fixes the three issues people have found: Nicholas' crash on loading SUnit.dtl.?? which was a very nasty bug in the GC'ing of some trace logs the VM maintains. It was down to a difference between Smalltalk's \\ and C's %, specifically that the latter can answer something of different sign to the modulus. The failure of GeneratorTest, superficially due to cannotReturn: crashes, but fundamentally to do with inter-page returns to frames within the page not preserving the frames above, which can be in use due to co-routining (swapSender: usage). I hope this will fix Seaside on Cog. Please let me know. Crashes due to temps occurring in very simple blocks (that Cog compiles frameless) e.g. [ | b | 5 ] value. HTH Eliot

Through an unfortunate combination of stupidity and lack of coffee, I somehow managed to lose my mail system and all mail for the last 24 hours. Apologies if I have failed to respond to mail from that time frame. Must have inadvertently set my cog bit without updating the brain ;) Dave

Hi All, I need to be able to push fixes to Cog into general circulation and for this I'd like to maintain a Cog branch in the Subversion tree. But how do I get permission and/or credentials? What's the process to add me to those allowed to write to the repository? Or is there simply a secret username and password that's told to a few? If the later can some kind soul let me have the password. I faithfully promise not to abuse the privilege. best Eliot

iOS folder in squeak VM source tree.

I've moved the source code for the iOS (iPhone/iPad/iPod touch platforms) and the Cocoa based V5 MacintoshSqueak VM to the squeakvm.org SVN tree from the isqueak.org SVN server. Future updates to that code base will only be pushed to the squeakvm.org tree So for building the V4.x.x series of Macintosh Carbon VM's use the "Mac OS" folder, for the 5.x series, or the iPhone/IPad flavour use the iOS folder. -- =========================================================================== John M.
