unix CMake compilation error

Hi, I'm trying to compile my own vm on linux (ubuntu 9.10, gcc 4.4.1, cmake 2.8.0) and found that, after generating the C sources, configure script will fail in cmake if you don't use at least one internal and one external plugin. This seems get fixed if I use at least one internal plugin (anyone) and at least one external. Did anybody have this problem too?? Ok, this one is wakeHighestPriority() does exit(42) because "scheduler could not find a runnable process" Note the guard clause check for "primitiveIndex" The objective-c code is also attached, note the "interpreterProxy->methodPrimitiveIndex() != 0" The execution path seems to be via checkForInterrupts via longUnconditionalJump in the interpreter loop. In this case the method seems to have the methodPrimitiveIndex set to non-zero. I'm wonder here if the "idleProcess" is triggering the callback and we want to switch to another process. However from the process dump there isn't anything runnable.... Why Interpreter subclass ObjectMemory ?

I ask without knowing anything of the background or context. I have just saw it and I cannot understand very much why it is like that. I ask myself if composition would be better. Probably is something related to SLANG, but I don't know. Thanks Mariano

Hi folks. I am reading VM chapters from the book Squeak Open Personal Computing and Multimedia and some other links from the wiki. I understood that there are "support code" from each platform. Nowadays, we can find that in the cvs/svn. I think before it was kept as strings in the image. That place, in the image, was the class InterpreterSupportClass ?? because the book talks about it and I imagine that is something similar...but I am not sure. Thanks Mariano

[Cuis] Optimizing away unused literals

In using Cuis, I discover that unused literals in a method, otherwise known as "poor-mans pragmas" are optimized away in compiledMethod. Does anyone know when this happened? (or was I using some other method to find them) Keith

UTF-8 status of VMs?

Folks - Just a quick check on the status of UTF-8 support in the VMs. Do we by now have agreement that all strings coming into the VM and out of the VM should be in UTF-8 by default? Including, but not limited to file and directory names, clipboard contents, etc? I'd really like to simplify some of the code to not have to deal with all of these conversions and simply assume that on any path into the VM we perform a UTF-8 conversion and get over with it. Patches to SqueakFFIPrims and FFI-Kernel to support "manual surfaces"

Hi, Here's a zip file that contains patches to SqueakFFIPrims (both Slang and C support files) and FFI-Kernels in order to support "manual surfaces", as embodied in the new class ExternalForm. There's a README in the zip file that describes how the changes fit together, so here I'll just describe the goal. The intent is to have a subclass of Form, ExternalForm, that uses an arbitrary pointer as the location of its pixel-data. It achieves this by acting as a client of SurfacePlugin much like any other, with the added twist of a primitive that enables Squeak code to set/clear the pointer. This is useful when working with such APIs as OpenGL and OpenCL, which provide a "map-image" API for interacting with images which reside in GPU memory. For example, if you want to access the updated contents of an OpenCL image, you would call clEnqueueMapImage(). This returns a pointer to CPU-accessible memory; by using this as the pointer for an ExternalForm, we can seamlessly use the OpenCL image just like any other Squeak Form. Cheers, Josh
