Ok, after much mindless poking, cross checking and testing, retesting, writing sunits today I can say the Alien FFI logic is mostly ported into Pharo. In the http://www.squeaksource.com/Alien.html MC library I would suggest someone with an eye towards "Compiler, CompileMethod, ParseNode" carefully look at the changes in "Alien-Core" to ensure I've not trashed some important part of the Pharo Compiler or Traits. I can't say if the changes are destructive or passive? you will find: For VMMaker folks Alien-VMMaker-Support which provides the changes to the latest VMMaker from squeaksource to build a Alien aware VM. Alien-VMMaker-Plugins which is the plugin logic For users of Alien Alien-Core-First - Load this first otherwise you'll get a parsing error later Alien-Core - Load this next, Compiler changes etc.. Alien-LibC - LibC support for os-x/unix/windows Alien-CoreTest - SUnits Optional stuff then is Alien-MacOSX-Core - Objective-C interface Alien-MacOSX-AppKit- Objective-C application api Alien-MacOSX-Examples- Objective-C examples Alien-Win32 - Windows examples. Lastly load Alien-Last-Class-Initialize - To ensure all the initializers were run, just in case MC loses it's mind... Oh and you need a plugin and a VM. It's midnight again and I don't have one compiled up for distribution, Monday's chore... Anyway you should be able to load the source code, point/learn about how it's used. Someone will have to build a Unix one, and a Windows one. For the moment there is NO powerpc version since that requires a bit of icky assembler. Same for the iPhone btw (icky ARM assembler). Better VM <-> plugin API

I was pretty unhappy with some places in VM, where it loads a function from plugin by calling ioLoadFunction... Also, even more painful to see when one plugin wants to call another plugin function. IMO things would be much better , if we formalize these things in VM. An idea is simple and easy to implement: We need only few functions implemented in VM: sqInt makeAtom(char * name); "registers new atom or returns id of already existing one" sqInt registerService (sqInt atom, void * service); "associate a value with service id" sqInt unregisterService(sqInt atom); "clear association with service id (make value=0)" And finally, void * getService(sqInt atom); Now, plugins first, should declare the atoms they would want to use or provide. This can be done once at plugin initialization stage, for instance: static sqInt bitBlitAtom = makeAtom('ioBitBlt'); Now, after acquiring atom, plugin can register a service fn under this atom: registerService(bitBlitAtom, (void*) bitBlt); and upon unloading unregisterService(bitBlitAtom); now, any other plugin can do: bitBltFn = getService(bitBlitAtom); if (bitBltFn) { bitBltFn( a, b,c blabla); } VM maintains a simple list of atom values and list of atom names and their numeric correspondence. The problem might be that arrayIndex is 32bit and it is used to calculate *samples which is 64bit. This would be a problem if arrayIndex has bit31 set. EXAMPLE: If arrayIndex comes in with bit31 set (e.g. 0x911f13fc), which is negative, the top bit is extended when *samples is calculated. samples becomes 0xffffffff911f13fc.(actual values while debugging) Perhaps the cast (void *)arrayIndex was to fix that. Here's the function... Ok, tthe TheInterruptSemaphore is signalled in checkForInterrupts() via usage of setInterruptPending(). As far as I know the only place that it is used is by the VM host platform keyboard handling logic only *IF* you are using an image that predates EventSensor (Aug 2000) Now since most people use an image that has this class what happens is (a) The process running EventSensor>>processEvent: looks at the incoming VM generated keyboard event and if it decides that the keys pressed meet it's criteria of what an interrupt is then it signals in the EventSensor interruptSemaphore That then wakes up the interrupt watcher process InputSensor>>userInterruptWatcher running at Processor lowIOPriority. This means of course the process that is running EventSensor>>processEvent: has to be able to run. Can't compile Squeak on linux 32bits

That's strange that you had a crash because of that. My ALSA setup should accommodate any change, though. I've played all kinds of audio at different sample rates. I'll check, though. I think what I have to do is check out what role vm-sound-ALSA plays. I haven't had a chance yet. I hope to get to that today. sqUnixSoundALSA.c does get built (it shows up in platforms/unix/bld/vm-sound-ALSA/sqUnixSoundALSA.o -- Brad Fuller

coordination between the olpc and official svn branches

Hi, I'm trying to maintain the squeak-vm in Debian, but everyday is being harder. I was using the trunk branch, but finally I have almost decided to give it up and I'm going to use the olpc branch. Changes from the olpc branch to trunk are being passed in a poor way: some directories are forgotten (Gstreamer or Ogg don't compile as the unix directories have been passed, but not the Cross ones), fixes are not passed (pango support is broken in the trunk branch, etc) So, please, I'd like to know if this is going to change, or if I just should give up, use the olpc branch and forgot about the "official" squeak-vm branch. Building (Linux) VM - with segfaults. that point to audio

Objective: I'm trying to build the VM out of the box, nothing fancy. I want to use ALSA. Problem: I'm getting segfaults when playing any audio object (from the Objects>Multimedia panel) I svn'd fresh source from the trunk, and followed the directions in README.SVN [1]. I then moved to unix subdir and made. Everything went fine, no errors and installed fine. Squeak seems to run fine.e.g. I exercised the network retrieving the Universe packages. Getting back to push/pop remappable oop

Hi list, >From previous discussion, where Eliot mentioned about removal push/pop remappable oop oddity and modifying GC to make it work w/o it, i'm just thinking - there was no need in having these methods from the very start. Any oop at any time can be temporary pushed on stack and then popped back again using #pop:/#push: methods. Of course, primitives need to be careful to not override the arguments, which can be reused in method when primitive fails - so they should push values past the arguments. But in most cases, a primitive creates new object(s) at the point, where it needs to form a returned value - at this point most things is done: arguments is read & already popped out of stack, values calculated etc etc. So it is safe to put temporary values on stack, making GC happy and without need in use push/popRemmappableOop. Going in this way, there is no need in adding safety schemes, like reserving extra free space and delaying GC before primitive finishes working. -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko AKA sig.
