Mac VM / Exupery build

Hi, I am trying to build a Mac VM including Exupery support. I've found it somewhat of a challenge so would appreciate some pointers! To cut a long story short I roughly have a 3.8.1 image, the svn trunk and Bryce's vmmaker and Exupery pair off squeaksource. I get as far as building in Xcode but I am missing a global declaration of globalSessionID: sqInt getThisSessionID(void) { return globalSessionID; } Any thoughts? Thanks, Mike

hacking a 3.9 VM

Gentlebeings, First off, I would like establish that I'm brand new to squeak - I'd like to use it to develop some prototypes of my research work; and to do that I'm going to have get into the depths of VM. I seem to have encountered my first Balrog ... I thought that I would start with building my own 3.9 VM (nothing like putting something together to figure out how it works). So I grabbed the latest from SVN (after looking at the branches and tags, I did not see a 3.9 "approved" fileset). I tried to build this ... and failed. So, I then tried using VMMaker 3.8b6, the 3.9g-7061 image, on a 3.7 VM. This gave me the files I was missing and after adding a few forward declarations into the win32/vm fileset, I have that building. Things were going quite well until the B3DAcceleratorPlugin. I seem to be getting lots and lots and lots of "implicit function declarations" in OpenGL and DX7 (d3) functions. Can someone throw me a bone on how to go about building a 3.9 VM for a Win32 platform? Gentlebeings, Please find attached a text file that is a "logbook" of my experience this morning in terms of getting a Win32 3.9 VM build up and running. I followed the build how-to to the best of my ability, based on what I understood the instructions to be (mind you, I've got a bad case of newbie-filters going here). I believe that some of my problems were caused by a misconfiguration of the paths in VMMaker, particularly the "Path to generated sources" when compared to my platform path and the file system structure in which I have been working. My file system looks like: Squeak Squeak-3.8 Squeak-3.9 Under each of the versioned directories I have Build Platforms Cross Win32 Deploy The deploy directory contains my images and the working version of the VM. The contents of the platforms directory was establish via "svn co ..." commands from the trunk, in this case v1444 as per a response in a prior thread from Tim R; the gist of which was make sure you start with matching VMMaker and source code. I had the following path settings in VMMaker, based on my understanding of the how-to-build text files and a review of the mail archives as well as the answers to my recent questions. Path to platforms code : c:\home\squeak\squeak-3.9\build\platforms Path to generated sources : c:\home\squeak\squeak-3.9\build\platforms\win32\build\src Thanks for you assistance to date and continuing patience as I come up to speed on the squeak vm. Strange socket behavior

Hi Guys - I debugged a *really* interesting problem today. For some reason, our Croquet sessions failed seemingly random with socket timeouts in strange places. The main clue we had was that it was somehow related to a rather large space being replicated over a rather slow line (a DSL uplink as the source for replication). Tracking this down into its gory details I ended up with a test case like here: data := ByteArray new: 10000000. socket := Socket newTCP. socket connectTo: 'myHost' port: myPort. socket sendData: data count: count. socket sendData: 'Hello' count: 5. When I did this over a slow uplink this would *reliably* time out on the second sendData:count: call. But why? Simply put, because the windows sockets interface doesn't quite function like I *thought* it would. I had expected the Windows send() call to accept only a "TCP packet size" full of data but it turns out it takes *everything* right down to the last byte in the first call. Meaning that the first sendData: call returns immediately but after that call it's chugging along trying to get the data out to the interface and the next sendData: call really wants a response with the default ConnectionTimeOut (which is less than the time it needs to complete the previous send). Why is this relevant? I believe pretty much all code we currently have is written under the assumption that the primitive will only accept "reasonable" amounts of data. Any code that pushes large amounts of data and expects the socket interface to handle it will be affected by this problem. I also suspect that other platforms may show similar behavior so some testing is in order. If you had random unexplained timeouts when sending large data buffers over slow lines, splitting them up into smaller ones as a workaround may just be your ticket until I fixed this problem in the VM, e.g., make the VM only take "reasonable" amounts of data in each call such that the caller can rest assured that the time out values are meaningful. I would also be interested in what other platforms do. Basically, the question is whether the primitive returns immediately in a single call, consuming all the data, or whether it will loop in Socket>>sendData:count:. If you have evidence towards either end please post your results to VM-dev (incl. the precise version of your OS). Cheers, - Andreas
