Fun with KeyPressMorph

Hi, I found KeyPressMorph today and opened one up (using World menu->New morph...->From alphabetical list->K-M->KeyPressMorph). It seems to be listening for all keyboard & mouse events from a Hand, but yet only displays characters if I have clicked inside the white box first. (Clicking inside its white box brings up a balloon which jitters quite badly.) At first, I was surprised that the white box would show the 'f' key as 'enter', right shift as '<', etc. But then I started having even more fun after placing a "self halt" inside KeyPressMorph>>#handleKeyboardEvent: I clicked in the white box, and I didn't expect (maybe I just forgot about what I've read from the VM porting documentation) that each keypress would result in three events: [97@692 keyDown '' (14) 1527104] [97@692 keystroke 'e' (101) 1527104] [97@692 keyUp '' (14) 1527221] But more fun came when I had not clicked in the white box, and pressed Cmd-Tab to switch out of and back into Squeak: Cmd-Tab brings one event: [179@671 keyDown '<Cmd-7>' (55) 1655765] Cmd-Tabbing back into Squeak brings another: [179@671 keyUp '<Cmd->' (0) 1671825] "note: there is a 'box' character in <Cmd-[box]>" It all seems quite strange. I wonder if this could help pinpoint how Squeak seems to sometimes "eat" a Command key when I am switching out of it and back into it. I sometimes have to hit Cmd and/or Ctrl a few times before I can restore use of e.g. my arrow keys. Squeak 5.2, OS X, 32-bit. Best, Tim J

VM sending keystrokes on mouse-wheel?

Hi Eliot and all, I have just noticed in Squeak 5.2 that attempting to scroll a text pane beyond its scroll limit causes the text cursor to start moving. So, for example, when I have a selected expression in the debugger, and I simply scroll the text pane, I hit the end and lose the selection, which is incredibly annoying. Does anyone know why this is and how to fix it? Thanks

Error in FFI examples for Windows 32

Hello all, I am running Squeak 5.2 on Windows 10. *Image* ----- C:\Users\Edwin\Documents\Squeak-5.2\Squeak5.2-18221-64bit-201810071412-Windows\Squeak5.2-18221-64bit.image Squeak5.2 latest update: #18221 Current Change Set: Unnamed1 Image format 68021 (64 bit) *Virtual Machine * --------------- C:\Users\Edwin\Documents\Squeak-5.2\Squeak5.2-18221-64bit-201810071412-Windows\Squeak.exe when I try to execute the FFI-examples for Windows, I get an error: "Could not coerce arguments" Could you confirm it is the fact that I execute Win32 code in a 64 bit environment, or is there more to it. I attached a screenshot with the instructions in the Workspace and (what I suppose to be) the failing FFI call . Thanks Edwin Ancaer

Refactoring Browser error

Hi All, If I attempt to execute the following: | rules | rules := RBParseTreeRewriter new. rules replace: 'state at: `@index put: `@expr' with: 'state at: `@index put: `@expr asC_unsigned_int'. (rules executeTree: (MD5Plugin parseTreeFor: #md5ProcessBuffer:withState:)) ifTrue: [rules tree newSource inspect]. self error: 'parse tree rewrite failed' I get "Error: End of statement list encountered" (stack trace below). The same works and produces the expected output in Pharo 7. It looks like the Refactoring Browser has diverged quite a bit between Squeak and Pharo. Who looks after RB in Squeak, and is there a plan to keep in sync with Pharo, or the other way around, or should this be fixed independently? A long time ago someone pointed us to this site (https://learnxinyminutes.com/docs/smalltalk/). There was an entry for smalltalk that was basically just a variant of the terse guide help page we have in the HelpBrowser. I made some attempts to update it ages ago and ... it drifted. Finally last week I got an email from someone that looks after the site and we got a slightly updated page installed. It still needs plenty of work. Not least in getting the formatting cleaned up. Anyone that can spend a little time to improve it and do the magic dance to request updates would be doing us a service. I believe I found the cause of the timeouts and it looks like an easy fix...
