[ANN] Open Croquet for Squeak 5.2 (32bit) release

Hi all, I'm pleased to announce, that the experimental version of Open Croquet for Squeak (https://blog.krestianstvo.org/en/open-croquet-for-squeak-6/) is now updated to the recent Squeak 5.2 (32bit) <http://files.squeak.org/5.2/Squeak5.2-18225-32bit>. This update includes critical FIX for the Croquet's IslandReader, which is related to the new Squeak image segment loader code. The included Croquet demos have become usable in network scenarios, but with some requirements: For replication to work, a participant must run a Master of the selected demo at least once on its image (for example doing: CroquetMaster new openInWorld). Then that participant could connect to any running Master on a network (for example doing: CroquetParticipant new openInWorld). Hi. I'm slowly (very) working towards crating a usable test for validating for classes where #= is true, #hash will also be true. Last week, the Date issue showed up. This week? Intervals: (0 to: 1) = (0 to: 5/3). "true" (0 to: 1) hash = (0 to: 5/3) hash. "false" CharacterBlock: | cb1 cb2 | cb1 := (CharacterBlock new stringIndex: 5 text: 'StandardText' asText topLeft: (100@100) extent: (20@20)). cb2 := (CharacterBlock new stringIndex: 5 text: 'StandardText' asText topLeft: (200@200) extent: (20@20)). cb1 = cb2. "true" cb1 hash = cb2 hash. "false" These were found by comparing a random sampling of instances of classes that implement #= or #hash (or both), and finding which have these deviant properties. The hard part is figuring out instances that are going to have issues - Date didn't show up in my prototype scanning. Also most classes don't have instances floating around to compare. Thanks, -cbc

UTCDateAndTime discussion + Q&A

Hi Dave, Thanks for making UTCDateAndTime available on SqueakMap that "just works" -- not having to go research how to properly install it left me some time to actually start looking at it today. A cursory look reveals that, at least functionally, everything appears to be essentially the same as original Chronology except the on-going million-dollar question: What are the point-in-time endpoints of a timespan identified by a particular "Date"? There are two reasonable answers to this question: 1) "local" e.g., a period that begins from 12am to 11:59:59.999999 of my LOCAL time, or 2) "global" e.g., a period that begins from 12am to 11:59:59.999999 of UTC (offset 0). We already know that original Chronlology supports ability for applications to represent their Dates either way. What about UTCDateAndTime? When I do: DateAndTime now asDate = Date today I get "true", even though MY 22-Oct-2018 begins and ends at a different point-in-time than those in the UTC timezone.. I realize most applications want a canonical representation of Dates, but where does this leave the timespan use-cases? Are they even possible at all? What if I truly need the same local representation of 22-Oct-2018 that everyone else recognizes in my local area? Thanks, Chris

(Smalltalk at: #Metacello) new baseline:'Seaside3'; repository: 'github://SeasideSt/Seaside:master/repository'; load. (Installer ss3 project: 'WebClient') install: 'WebClient-Seaside-Adaptor'. "Optionally use the control panel to add adaptor, start and to set encoding" "WAControlPanel open." "do the above but without using the GUI" ((Smalltalk at: #WAWebServerAdaptor) port: 8080) codec: ((Smalltalk at: #GRCodec) forEncoding: 'utf-8'); start. The codec is optional – but the above allows me to put emojis into my components, like: crayon ^ WideString fromPacked: 128397 renderContentOn: html html text: self crayon. Including build instructions for the VM in the online help?

Hi All, someone just asked for build instructions for the VM. It strikes me that it would be useful to include this in the VM General tab of the About Squeak tool. But we'd have to parse the VM to find out if it was an opensalltalk VM, PyPy VM, Graal VM, SqueakJS VM, Interpreter VM etc. Are the other VM builders interested in adding info for their VMs? If we go this route we could also put a pointer to the About Squeak tool in the Help tool. P.S. I suggest doing the equivalent on Pharo too. _,,,^..^,,,_ best, Eliot

I don't know if this is of general interest, but I have been maintaining an update stream for Squeak trunk in the traditional V3 image format at http://www.squeaksource.com/TrunkUpdateStreamV3. It can be difficult (or at least very annoying) to follow the update stream and work through the various errors encountered, so I put a link to a copy of my own V3 Squeak 5.2 image from the www.squeaksource.com/TrunkUpdateStreamV3 page. This V3 image can be run with either an interpreter VM or a Cog VM. I use it myself to ensure that the interpreter VM stays healthy with respect to various changes introduced in Squeak trunk.
