IMO, the model of files that the FilePlugin provides access to can and should be a superset of facilities. By not supporting facilities such as permissions or symbolic links or active mount-points we hobble our core file functionality and that makes us a very weak scripting platform. Putting these facilities in add-on packages makes configuration more difficult and means that an elegant implementation in the core file classes, with fallbacks for platforms that don't support the concepts, is very difficult. If we want to support unix-style scripting in Pharo and Squeak (and I think we very much do; there are many areas out there where good scripting is essential) then we need a better File model, and that means not just getting rid of FileDirectory et al, it also means providing the right infrastructure in the FilePlugin, and that means extensions like the one the Pharo VM folks made. FFI callbacks

Hi all-- I'd like to use a C shared library via FFI from Squeak or Pharo. Specifically, I want to call a C function which takes as one of its parameters a pointer to an array of callback function addresses. Does one of the FFI approaches floating around handle that, and provide a relatively pleasant mapping between Smalltalk block closures and C callback function addresses? I was doing this so far in GemStone, but apparently its FFI only supports passing callback function addresses one at a time as direct parameters of C callouts. I suppose I could write a wrapper C library around the one I really want to use, that provides the callback setup interface that GemStone expects, but whenever I have to write actual C code I start to think "Hm, why don't I just use a Smalltalk VM for which I have the source?" :) All the fancy distributed object-database stuff that my project also wants can wait for a bit. thanks! -C -- Craig Latta netjam.org +31 6 2757 7177 (SMS ok) + 1 415 287 3547 (no SMS)

Mantis lets us configure default owners of tickets for various subprojects. It's a bit.... out of date. (A "default owner" of a subproject means that if you don't explicitly assign a ticket to someone, this is the person to whom you implicitly assign the ticket.) Any, Box-Admins both point to KenCausey, who must be tired of receiving the occasional mail on these topics. Here are our current mappings: Any: KenCausey Box-Admins: KenCausey CI: FrankShearar Documentation: casey Games: asm IRC: frankcag Monticello: avi News: gcorriga Release Packaging: FrankShearar SqueakMap: gokr ToDo: RalphJohnson Traits: dvf www.squeak.org: KarlRamberg I'm guessing they're so out of date because we tend not to use bugs.squeak.org very much (sadly). I'm happy to stay default owner on my subprojects, unless someone else would like to take the can. But certainly there are some projects that really ought to change owner. Being the default owner doesn't imply that you have to fix the bugs! It just means there's a clear point of contact: someone will definitely see the bug report because it lands in their mailbox. The traffic from being an owner is... minimal. As in "because almost no one uses the bugtracker you'll likely never see a mail" :) frank

I am about to close some old mantis reports. So if you were to assign to a literal Array in a method's literals that assignment would not cause an error, and worse, would not be visible because the mehtods source code would be unchanged. We shall have a proper fix for this in a future release where we will support fully immutable literals. For now the correct respponse shoudl be to find out where in your code the literal is assigned to and to not do that. Building a linux/Pi library to call via FFI

I’m trying - and so far failing - to do what should surely be a very simple thing. This isn’t a new situation… especially on unix. I have a single C file with just two functions. I have a matching H file. I want to make them into a dynamic library that I can call via FFI. This really shouldn’t be rocket science stuff! So far I can a) compile the C file (well duh) b) link it as a shared library c) install it in /usr/local/lib (next to another library that I can use from FFI already, so I know the path gets looked at) d) set the permissions to match the working library e) use from a simple C program to prove it works However, all I get from squeak is an error that the external module is not found. I’ll take a look with a debug vm but I’d be very happy to hear that I’m forgetting some trivial flag or incantation that can short-circuit the ‘fun’ of using gdb. Here is the code and makefile - https://copy.com/DGDbpJM4wnHQrDUG What I’ve been doing to build & try is make clean make sudo install -m 0755 libmadgwickIMU..s0.1 /usr/local/lib/libmadgwickIMU.so.1 sudo ln -sf /usr/local/lib/libmadgwickIMU.so.1 /usr/local/lib/libmadwickIMU.so sudo ldconfig gcc -Wall -o testing testing.c -lmadwickIMU ./testing ‘testing’ seem to do the right thing. Going into squeak (cog/spur/pi) and trying a method like - invSqrt: floatval #<cdecl: float ‘invSqrt’ (float) module: ‘madgwickIMU’> ^self externalCallFailed - just gives me the not found module error. I’ve restarted squeak after building the lib, I’ve opened a new terminal after building the lib (just in case there’s some stupid path-exporting nonsense I don’t understand etc) and I’ve made sure to smile only on the left side.
