GSoC time

So. Some kind people (GSoC) are willing to throw money at us if only we have something for people to do. We really, really ought to propose projects. We did nothing last year, and so got nothing. For starters, there's work to be done in finishing porting Cog to ARM. What else might we usefully propose? For instance, I'd like to see a project bringing Reactive Extensions [1] to Squeak. Or a Cap'n Proto [2] implementation, whether through FFI or native. Or maybe there's useful work to be done in the UI department. Here is a forward from Pharo lists: Dear Smalltalkers, Stef is overreacting as always, going off-topic and don't want to see the real reasons behind this proposal. Which is to make GSoC attractive to all Smalltalkers by removing the last doubt about the any bias towards any Smalltalk or group. That's why I propose to go more independent under new name 'Smalltalk', besides a clearly better visibility of such name of course. Squeak Board Elections 2014

Build Slave

Hi Folks, I know I am little bit overdue here, but I have my OSX machine set up with a Windows 8 machine to follow shortly. I have it connected to the jenkins server, but when I attempt to have it run the Squeak-OSX project it chooses to run on the "norst" slave, ignoring mine. I can't seem to figure out how to get it to run on my machine so that I can at least confirm that I am set up correctly. If anyone has any pointers here they would be appreciated, or if you can just go ahead and run a build on my machine and let me know if all went well that would be appreciated as well. Anyway, hopefully this can help out with our OSX infrastructure. Thanks, Jeff

I’ve just swapped over to using the DockingBarThing for the menubar in my app and although it immediately showed great promise there was a strange problem; the menus were clipped by the containing menubar morph. After a bit of firking around I found MenuMorph>popUpAdjacentTo:forHand:from: where the menu finally gets popped up with the line `sourceItem owner owner addMorphFront: self.` I’m always a bit suspicious when I see code like `foo owner owner` since it has almost every time proven to be a bad way of doing what is needed, In this case it is relying upon unwarranted assumptions about where the owning morph exists and thus for me, it failed. Changing it to `sourceItem world addMorphFront: self.` makes it work *for me* and I think is probably more what it ought to be for a good general case. Updating Squeak 4.5 RC3

Hi Folks, So testing out the RC3 image and if I select the "Update Squeak" menu item it appears to attempt to connect source.squeak.org but ends up popping up a modal dialog stating that it was "Unable to retrieve updates from remote repository". I would have expected that it would instead say that there are no updates to be found, rather than it can't retrieve them. Is this expected behaviour, a sign of a misconfiguration on the server, or something in the image itself? Thanks for your time, Jeff

I would like to run for the Squeak Oversight Board

Hi Folks, I would like to announce my candidacy for the Squeak Oversight Board. I have been interested in Squeak and have been using it for a several years now, ever since I first stumbled onto Squeak By Example, worked my way through some initial confusion with the interface, and subsequently had a moment of enlightenment. Why isn't all software developed in this way? Although I have used Squeak for several years now, I have realized that I need to do more to give back to it. I have made some efforts, working a bit on the Squeak-CI setup last year, and also working to get some performance testing set up on the CI server. I have also made a couple of very minor code contributions to the trunk over the past few years. But the beauty of Open Source is that it gives back as much as you put in, and if you want it to get better you've got to roll up your sleeves and dig in. Helping with code is always great but I would also like to contribute my time to the community, and helping with the Oversight Board seems like a great way to do so. My main vision for Squeak is that it continues to become modularized and "untangled" via the great work that Frank and others are doing. This sort of work benefits the system as a whole, besides the goal of building up from a minimal image. I would also like to see Squeak become better documented, both on the wiki and in the image, possibly by picking a class each week and soliciting feedback on how best to document it. I would like to start building up the number of "community supported packages" that exist on Squeak map, by going back into the existing catalog, grabbing high value packages, doing some work to get them up to snuff on current images and then having that work be validated on the CI server. Finally, the graphical directness and malleability of Squeak has always been the most appealing thing about it to me and I would like to see Squeak move forward in that realm. I think that Juan has done great work with morphic, improving morph layout and implementing per-morph coordinates and I would like to see some of that work brought into our image. I also think that Pharo has done great work bringing the actual graphical capabilities of Smalltalk forward via Athens and so I would like to see Athens working in Squeak too, so that we can all access beautiful and fast anti-aliased graphics and text rendering.
