Passing array of float from Squeak to C

I'm facing problem to pass a float array over to C, to create a plugin. Previously, I use variableWordSubclass: to create a class to store floats, in an array. It works fine, as floats are stored as words. Now that I need to have an instance variable, I use variableSubclass: to store floats. It seems like floats are being stored as object in the array this time. The VM crashes when I try to use to same method to access to the float array. Thanks. CurlPlugin for OSX?

Hi all. As the thread below "SSLSocket and basic http auth (api.del.icio.us or mail.google.com or ...)" talks about, SSL HTTP requests for Squeak appear to be broken. As a workaround I'm trying to use the CurlPlugin, but it seems there isn't a working OSX version. Has anybody got it working with OSX, and if so how? SSLSocket and basic http auth (api.del.icio.us or mail.google.com or ...)

I try to connect to SSL + Basic HTTP Auth sites, for example : https://mail.google.com or https://api.del.icio.us When I try : | conn | conn := SSLSocket newConnectionAddress: (NetNameResolver addressForName: ' mail.google.com') port: 443 I obtain a socket with state: SSLConnectionClosed. With sites that do not require HTTP Basic authentication : | conn | conn := SSLSocket newConnectionAddress: (NetNameResolver addressForName: ' www.usaa.com') port: 443 I obtain a SSLSocket with state: SSLConnectionConnected. But don't we need an open socket in order to send the request with the authentication data in the header ? In fact, inside the HttpsSocket>>httpsGetDocumentFromUrl: url args: args accept: mimeType request: requestString we find: sock := HttpsSocket new. sock connectTo: serverAddr port: connectToPort. (Apologies for multiple reception of this email) CALL FOR PAPERS International Workshop on Context-Oriented Programming (COP'09) Co-located with the 23rd European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP'09) http://prog.vub.ac.be/cop09 OVERVIEW Context information plays an increasingly important role in our information centric world. Software systems must adapt to changing contexts over time, and must change even while they are running. Unfortunately, mainstream programming languages and development environments do not support this kind of dynamic change very well, leading developers to implement complex designs to anticipate various dimensions of variability. Context-oriented Programming (COP) directly supports variability depending on a wide range of dynamic attributes, making it possible to dispatch run-time behavior on any properties of the execution context. By now, several researchers have started to work on Context-oriented Programming and related ideas, and first implementations ranging from first prototypes to mature platform extensions used in commercial deployments have illustrated how multi-dimensional dispatch can indeed be supported effectively to achieve expressive run-time variation in behavior. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * Interesting application domains and scenarios * Programming language abstractions for context-oriented programming (e.g. dynamic scoping, roles, traits, prototype-based extensions) * Configuration languages (e.g. feature description interpreters, transformational approaches) * Interaction between non-functional programming concerns and context- oriented programming (e.g. security, persistence, concurrency, distribution). * Modularization approaches for context-oriented programming (e.g. aspects, modules, layers, plugins). * Guidelines to include context-oriented programming in programs (e.g. best-practices, patterns) * Runtime support for context-oriented programming (e.g. reflection, dynamic binding) * Tool support SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Potential attendants are expected to submit either a paper of 4 (at most 6) pages in ACM format, presenting scientific and/or empirical results about uses of context-oriented programming or new approaches for software engineering purposes or a short essay of 2 (at most 3 pages) defending a position about where research on context-oriented programming should be heading in the near future. In trying to recap this past year, my first year of being *back* into the Smalltalk world, I googled "randal schwartz squeak", and saw: Results 1 - 10 of about 5,910 for (randal OR randall) schwartz squeak. I think about 5700 of those pages didn't exist a year ago. Here's the highlights: * Created my blog methodsandmessages.vox.com to publish squeak news and observations * Demonstrated Squeak and Scratch on the "Lab with Leo" show, hosted by Leo Laporte and distributed in Canada and Australia * Had both Avi Bryant and Dan Ingalls on FLOSS Weekly, my weekly podcast with an audience of about 25,000 or so. Squeak was mentioned once or twice. :) * Managed to sneak a mention of Smalltalk and Squeak into just about every other episode of FLOSS Weekly * Got Leo Laporte thinking about a weekly Seaside tutorial video podcast, in which we would run through my courseware to teach him (and the audience, by proxy) how Seaside and Squeak works * Provided the weekly Squeak News segment for James Robertson's Industry Misinterpretations podcast, broading the continued presence and currency of Squeak throughout the Smalltalk community * In my role as Leadership Team member, coordinated the cutover of the squeak.org to Aida, and am currently sheparding the Squeak 4.0 relicense effort * Established the meme "the year of Smalltalk" in my blog, which has been used as a unifying rallying cry to help the resurgence in 2008 * Got the Brazillian FISL conference interested enough in Smalltalk from my 2008 presentation that they created an entire Smalltalk/Squeak miniconf for 2009 (which I'm just now putting out the CFP for, by the way) * Got interviewed by InfoQ about the Smalltalk Comeback, where I mentioned Squeak prominently * Got interviewed by WebDevRadio about Seaside, mentioning Squeak at least a few times * Got interviewed by Reflective Surface, a blog about Ruby-ish things about Seaside and Squeak * Produced a keynote talk at STIC's Smalltalk Solutions 2008, which included my Seaside talk and a Persistence talk, both incorporating many mentions of Squeak * Gave a three-hour lecture at OSCON 2008 on Smalltalk and Seaside, using Squeak as the primary demonstration tool * Produced a few videos for Vimeo on how to use Squeak, and got a few other people using Vimeo for hosting, including creating a Squeak group there * Created a "Seaside Bootcamp" class, to be delivered by BigNerdRanch in Germany in a few months * Promoted Squeak via watching various twitter and blog messages for mentions of Smalltalk, Seaside, and Squeak * Answered many questions on squeak-dev, beginners, and seaside mailing lists. * Hung out in the #squeak, #seaside, and ##smalltalk channels on freenode, and the #smalltalk channel on Parcplace, answering questions and occasionally annoying the other locals * Gave the "Seaside: your next web framework" advocacy presentation at many companies and conferences, which features Squeak as one of the many Smalltalk implementations that runs Seaside * Presented a talk on Squeak GLORP at the PostgreSQL day in Portland * Got interviewed by GeekCred podcast for a general biography, but managed to get Squeak mentioned in there once or twice * Answered Smalltalk and Squeak-related questions on Stack Overflow Ok, I'll stop there. I'm sure there's three important things I'm leaving out, and 20 trivial things. Looking back at this list, all I can say is... "oops, I set the bar too high for my second year". :) But seriously, I have dedicated, and continue to dedicate, my time and energy and attention and skills to promoting Squeak as the basis for a sane programming environment to make it easier for all of us to get things done, and cooperate and collaborate in an open-source way to avoid repeating ourselves. I would be honored to serve a second term on the Leadership Team, to help complete the relicensing effort, and work with all parties to figure out what Squeak 5.0 needs to be. We're at an interesting point in Squeak's development (think: "the teenage years"), and continuity with the past and a vision for the future are cruicial. Monticello Configurations not visible in Monticello Browser

All, I'm currently using two images based on Damiens sq3.10.2-7179web09.02.1 image. However in my working image I can see Monticello Configuration files in repositories - in my test image (more or less the base sq3.10.2-7179web09.02.1 image) I cannot. Is there some setting I did not find? Thanks, Udo

The Institute has a workforce of 3,700, 2,900 of whom are scientists from INRIA and its partner organizations. INRIA has an annual budget of 162 million euros, 20% of which comes from its own research contracts and development products. INRIA develops many partnerships with industry and fosters technology transfer and company foundations in the field of ICST - some eighty companies have been funded. Startups are financed in particular by INRIA Transfert, a subsidiary of INRIA that supports four startup funds. The international collaborations are based on an incentive strategy of welcoming and recruiting foreign students as well as developing strong exchanges between research scientists. This objective is tackled from two complementary perspectives: reengineering and modularity constructs for programming languages. In the reengineering perspective we will propose new analyses to understand and restructure existing large applications (specialized package metrics, adapted visualizations, layer identifications). In the modularity construct context we will work on a pure trait-based language and new modular abstractions. We will also propose the definition of dedicated secure language constructs based on a modular and layered kernel as one direct application of modularization. These programming language constructs will be experimented on Pharo, a platform for dynamic web development. Pharo will be used as a testbed for a pure-traits language, which will be used to assess the impact of modular classes in terms of reuse orthogonally to inheritance. SCIENTIFIC CONTEXT Recently, traits have been proposed as a single inheritance backward compatible solution in which the composing entity has the control over the trait composition. Traits are fine-grained units used to compose classes, while avoiding many of inheritance and mixin-based approaches. To evaluate the expressiveness of traits, some hierarchies were refactored, showing code reuse. However, such large refactorings, while valuable, may not be facing all the problems, since the hierarchies were previously expressed within single inheritance and following certain patterns. In addition traits have always been considered in addition to class inheritance but not as the main composition and reuse mechanism. Goals We are in the process of designing a pure traits based language. We want to evaluate the impact of having only traits as building blocks and removing inheritance from an object-oriented language. We expect the candidate to take part of the design of a pure traits- based programming language, to perform analysis on large piece of software for remodularisation purposes and redesign a library. We expect the candidate to implement the core of a pure trait-based language and some representative examples. Hi all, due to a higher workload, this year I won't be able to act as an admin on behalf of Squeak in the Google Summer of Code program. Is there anyone interested in taking over? Responsibilities of the admin include: - submitting the application for the mentoring organization - coordinating the mentors - managing the student applications - keeping track of the mentors and students during the various phases of the program - keeping in touch with the program admins at Google If anyone is interested, please contact me in private.
