Community: While Cees exaggerates a bit it is the case that only a handful of us are posting to people.squeakfoundation.org lately, and mostly me. Are we, as a community, interested in maintaining this site? Morphic TableLayout changing direction

I read that the value of listDirection can be changed at any time. I thought perhaps that was the way to start a new row. For example, start with it set to #leftToRight, add morphs for the first row, change it to #topToBottom, add the first morph of the second row, change it back to #leftToRight, add the rest of the morphs in the second row. That didn't work. Maybe it can't be changed and the only way to have multiple rows is to have a different parent morph for each row, adding each of those to another morph that lays them out vertically. Can someone confirm the recommended way to lay out morphs in rows and columns? --- Mark Volkmann

Hi, I can't connect to squeak.org or squeakfoundation (for the list archives). I can telnet to the port and I get a connection but when I do a get request it just drops the connection. It's been like this since last night (i.e. more then 9 hours ago). Thanks, Jason

I did some work to integrate LLVM and Clang with VW. I'm moving this to Squeak. For the platforms supported by LLVM this allows inline C/ ObjC/C++ (although C++ is early days yet), dynamically compiled and loaded, and highly optimized platform-independent SSA-based native code generation. As a side effect it can provide an optimized FFI based on jitted stubs/trampolines. I did this (trivially) for callout in VW, but didn't bother about callbacks. You can also use Clang to parse platform headers (and code), which you can obviously include in inline C, and also produce a parse tree with various degrees of semantic analysis, which you can then reflect on. Clang goes to extraordinary lengths to maintain source correspondence, which is an added bonus in interactive environment such as Smalltalk. Eliot's aware of that work. AFAIK he decided against using LLVM for Cog because Qwak wanted something that didn't increase the VM footprint, although he probably had some other reasons as well. PICs were an issue he raised, but that can be dealt with - in fact, by using runtime type recording at the call sites, plus some techniques used in multi-method dispatch for CLOS, you can optimize for both sides of a double dispatch, which would given at the very least highly optimized numeric operations. LLVM also does cool link time optimization and inlining, and I've got this (largely unformed) idea that the type-based specialisation could possibly trickle back along a call chain, resulting in block-aggregation that would expose more opportunity for optimization by delimiting regions of known type information. It might be however that such regions never practically get above a certain size. I'd like to investigate using LLVM to make plugins that are dynamically compiled and loaded (i.e. not via VMMaker). A further thought is that the VM could be regenerated, compiled and switched whilst running. This leads obviously to a *very* basic cross-platform headless VM that regenerates itself upon loading, optimized for the platform it's running on. Of course you'd cache this. Benefits of LLVM/Clang over roll-your-own native code generation are a) the significant optimization systems; b) cross-platform code generation; and c) dynamic C-family integration. And finally, LLVM/Clang are two of the most beautifully, cleanly architected and written pieces of C++ code I've ever seen. No, I'm not a contributor :) Anyone else interested in this? Hi-- - Full attendance: Bert, Craig, Edgar, Giovanni, Igor, Randal, and Yoshiki. - Randal reports that the web team is running smoothly. Congratulations to all! - Craig said he's writing a Naiad (Spoon module system) design overview, and will post it to the squeak-dev and spoon mailing lists. He's been writing it for a day, and is about half done. - Yoshiki says he's created an EToys 4.0 image, based on Squeak 3.8, which is license-clean. We decided to use a similar process to create Squeak 4 from Squeak 3.11 (and whatever other license-clean changes the 3.11 release team wants to include). Yoshiki will consult with them about ensuring license-cleanliness. Randal will coordinate with the release team and report on their progress. - We decided in principle to have two board-appointed release teams working at any given moment: one producing the next release (I'll call it "one-ahead"), and one producing the release after that ("two-ahead"). We decided that Spoon is the two-ahead release now, or Squeak 5. Craig is leading the two-ahead team, and will add people to it when Naiad can support their work. - The next meeting will be 2008-11-19 due to schedule conflicts. iphone source code updates & a note about multi-touch

I've created http://www.squeaksource.com/iPhone.html To hold the change to the image for complex event data, (touch, acceleration, and location). This also contains the overrides for VMMaker to enable us to build a VM that supplies complex event types and deals with the proposed mmap changes for faster image reading (especially on the iPhone). http://www.squeaksource.com/ObjectiveCBridge2.html As mentioned contains the source code for yet another Objective-C bridge and was updated. Now before anyone asks those new powerbooks with multi-touch events are *not* supported yet. I've not even seen the SDK changes from Apple yet that explain how you get the event data from Objective-C into your application. Plus I am still working on the basic infrastructure for the Objective- C based VM (I am also looking for funding to help expedite that effort). So we are maybe months away from being able to deal with multi-touch events on os-x using those new powerbooks. -- = = = ======================================================================== John M. NSIS script to install and register Squeak on Vista and XP

Hi, I customized a Squeak 3.9 version adding some projects and ideas suitable to early education and I want to deliver that. Before I used NSIS to build the installation file under XP. Currently, this instalation don't works in windows Vista but I found a way to solve this. Unfortunately the solution is using an installable file for XP and other file to vista. Is there any way to do this just in one file only in NSIS? More. I got the EToys installer from Squeakland and ran it under both windows XP and Vista. It works well and registered the plug-in to use EToys on-line under web browser. How to add this feature to my own installation file so I can register the NPSqueak.dll plug-in? I've no experience on this matter and a little knowledge in NSIS scripting, so if any of you have a NSI script capable to do this or an example can send it to me? Thanks in advance.
