Box-Admins Team Report for September, 2008

The box-admins team is reponsible for seeing that the community shared server is maintained and setting up any new features to be hosted on that server. For September, 2008: Well it's been a tumultuous month for the community server. Between September 12th and today (October 8th) the server has stopped responding and had to be rebooted 7 times. The reason why the server has become non-responsive is currently unknown. Each time I have looked through the logs and found nothing relevant. Marcus Denker has contact our hosting company to try to determine if they can provide an explanation. I delayed this report hoping to have some information on that, but I've waited long enough. With the exception of the unavoidable downtime there has been little disruption. Marcus setup a monitoring service also provided by the hosting company so now he (and I) get email if the server can't be pinged for more than a moment. So now, in general, the server is rebooted in about an hour. All services have started up automatically and cleanly every time (with an exception I will note below). I'm confident that with a little time we will resolve this problem. Hopefully I will have some good news in the next report on this issue. Janko Mivsek and the WebTeam have been working on a new replacement website for http://www.squeak.org/ for a while now and we finally installed it. The older Smallwiki based site can still be found temporarily at http://old.squeak.org/ . The site is still under considerable development and while that is the case it is useful to run it 'headful' under VNC. However it is at best awkward to automatically start it in that configuration using the system we use (daemontools). Since this is just temporary and not worth a lot of time it is configured to startup headless and then once I notice the server has restarted I shut down the headless instance and manually start it under VNC. At one point though I was fiddling around trying to see if I could get it to start under VNC automatically. I then set it aside as not worth the trouble. Unfortunately I left the startup script in a half-modified state. As a result after one reboot the website did not startup properly. Once I realized what had happened and my mistake I fixed the script. RSS Aggregator in Squeak

Hi all, I am looking for an RSS reader or aggregator running within Squeak. Is there any ??? During my search, I found BottomFeader written in VisualWorks. And the nice thing with BottomFeader is that an external application can be notified about events like for instance a new feed has been processed so the GUI can be updated. I would like to use such a thing and Seaside in addition for the rendering. Any suggestion is welcome. François

Inline compiler optimizations

Hi, does anyone already know, what the impact the inline compiler optimizations like avoiding #ifTrue: or #to:do sends has on the VM performance? Or, where could I disable then in order to measure it myself? btw. some methods, especially in the exception handling code, use the knowledge about this implicit optimizations, for example when they use thisContext in an #ifTrue: or #whileTrue: block, which does not return the BlockContext in that cases... :)

Squeak VMs for Mac

Is there more than one Squeak VM that will run under Mac OS X? If so, I'd like to know their names so I can search for them. The reason I ask is that I think the -headless option is broken in the version that I'm using and I'd like try another one. --- Mark Volkmann

Hi all, This version renames all class variables to use the 'MD' namespace. This prevents problems filing MC into images that have classes with the same names as class variables in MC. running headless on Mac OS X

I need to run Squeak in headless mode on Mac OS X. As far as I know, this is the way to do it. 1) Open a Terminal window. 2) Create a symbolic link by entering ln -s "$SQUEAK_VM_DIR/Squeak{version}.app/Contents/MacOS/Squeak VM Opt" squeak 3) Create a text file with a ".st" file extension and add a sequence of Smalltalk statements in it. 4) Enter the following: squeak -headless $SQUEAK_IMAGE {filename}.st When I do this, I don't get any errors, but it just hangs. Here's what I have in the .st file I'm running ... pretty simple. fs := FileStream newFileNamed: 'cmdline.txt'. fs nextPutAll: 'line 1'; cr. fs nextPutAll: 'line 2'. fs.close Any idea why it doesn't exit? Maybe I need to do something more at the end of the .st file. Maybe it's related to this. If I run "squeak $SQUEAK_IMAGE", it tries to start the Squeak UI, but I get an Information dialog that says "Squeak cannot locate the sources file named /Users.Mark/ SqueakV39.sources". I copied the .sources file to my home directory and ran it again. This time the UI came up, but it doesn't respond to mouse clicks. --- Mark Volkmann

StartUpList and ShutDownList

Looking at the code in SystemDictionary, it seems that StartUpList and ShutDownList should be classes, but when I do a "find class..." it doesn't find them. Where are those and how can I find out what's in them? --- Mark Volkmann

More descriptive version report

Dear Squeakers, Today I did squeak -version and I was surprised, that is, almost scared that 3.10 VM is still in beta: mivsek@pingo:~> squeak -version 3.10-1 #1 Thu Apr 10 14:52:07 PDT 2008 gcc 4.1.2 Squeak3.10beta of 22 July 2007 [latest update: #7159] Linux vps2.piumarta.com 2.6.9-023stab044.11-enterprise #1 SMP Sun Sep 30 12:15:39 MSD 2007 i686 GNU/Linux default plugin location: /usr/local/lib/squeak/3.10-1/*.so Well, after a short chat on IRC I learned that a first line holds the real version, not a second one. But second one is more visible and for sure I'm not the first one to make such a mistake. So I propose that the version report is more descriptive, like: VM version: 3.10-1 #1 Thu Apr 10 14:52:07 PDT 2008 gcc 4.1.2 built for image: Squeak3.10beta of 22 July 2007 [latest update: #7159] ... In my opinion such small improvement wouldn't costs much but will lower the possible confusion quite a lot.
