hashing behaviors for the system archive

Hi all-- I'm working on the system archive for Spoon (see [1]). I'll be storing "records" in it which have suitable information for reconstructing past versions of classes and methods (e.g., the format of a class, or a method's instructions, amongst several other things). A common operation is looking up the record for a currently-installed class or method. I'd like for each class and method to be able to provide a key for looking up the corresponding record, effectively a hash (what I call a "storage hash"). I think it would be fine to use the identity hash of a method (along with the normal hash, for additional range, in 28-bit space via hashMultiply), since methods change identity completely from version to version. When you recompile the source for an existing method, the system makes a completely new compiled method, it doesn't modify the old one. However, a behavior's state can change in ways that result in a new version of the behavior as far as the archive is concerned, without changing the identity of the class object itself (e.g., changing class name). There are several such state changes, and some of the pieces of state can refer back to the class itself. Rather than have to perform an expensive and possibly circular storage hash calculation, I wonder if it would be reasonable to use the identity hashes of the class and its superclass, and just have the class change its own identity hash whenever one of those state changes occurs. It's easy enough to add a primitive to change the hash bits of an object to the next pseudo-random hash value. This brings me to the gazillionth recitation of the classic Smalltalk hacker's question: Will something bad happen if I do this? :) (The corollary is that I have indeed already done it and nothing bad seems to have happened *yet* :). Hi, Running Squeak 3.9-10 VM on OS X 10.4 (Intel), and a 3.9-final-7067 image, the VM crashes whenever I try to execute Smalltalk abandonTempNames. This happens even when executed on a completely unmodified image. Inspection shows that the crash happens during the execution of the primitive in Array>>elementsExchangeIdentityWith:. Has anyone else experienced this? Cheers, Patrick

Installing FreeType in Seaside Dev image

Hi FreeType Plugin freezes my Seaside image at the Preamble stage when installing via Package Universe. Using the VM from Squeak-Win32-3.7.1-VM.zip and unchanged image squeak-web-118.image I really like the enhanced fonts and would like to get this running in my seaside image. Any suggestions? -- Edward Stow

DirectX started out inferior to OpenGL. I remember the days when DirectX first came out. Cards that fully supported OpenGL were high end and very expensive, several hundred dollars each. The DirectX cards were cheaper, more affordable to average consumers, but supported fewer features. I remember somebody (maybe ID Software?) came out with a library called MiniGL that could run accelerated 3D graphics using a subset of OpenGL on the more expensive DirectX cards. I have very little experience with developing for DirectX, OpenGL, etc. So I can't make an assessment about the superiority of the current versions. ---Mark mmille10(a)comcast.net

Hi Edgar, What are your idea's on this? I would like to see a Friends-of-Morphic group. A Team implies some responsibilities and authority. I have not gotten that far in my thinking yet. Slowdown with required methods...

Hello, As you probably noticed, the 'required' dynamic protocol slows down the code browsing. The method DynamicProtocols class>>collectAllProtocolsOnClass: aClass has the following comment: "Returns a collection of all dynamic protocols that should be displayed for the current class. Only non-empty protocols are returned" Although it makes sense to display non-empty protocols only, DPRequired makes a significant slowdown because required methods have to be computed to determine if this dynamic protocol has to be displayed or not. What about defining a hasRequiredMethod in Behavior? I guess this will remove the slowdown... Search Browser

Hello, As you might have noticed, the Search Browser is a not in a stable shape currently. For example, you cannot select a metaclass. Is there any of you who is putting some effort in this ? If none, then I am willing to spend some time on this. Local SqueakSource Server

I am trying to install a SqueakSource Server on my home machine in order to try creating an email-based commit notifier. I have tried several combinations of 3.7 image, 3.8 image, and 3.9 images Things I have tried: - Loading http://www.squeaksource.com/ss/SqueakSource-dt.1020.mcz into a full 3.7 or 3.8 image. This Installs fine, but does not run because DynamicBindings is missing. - After installing DynamicBindings from SqueakMap onto a 3.8 image, the server fails when a page is loaded with: MessageNotUnderstood: UndefinedObject>>title. I am not sure how to get a traceback. - I could not test on a 3.7 image, because I cannot load SqueakMap; It tries to update to 2.2, and fails. - Following the instructions on the wiki page for http://source.squeakfoundation.org/ss/ fails because I cannot use SqueakMap; same problem as above - Following the instructions at http://osdir.com/ml/lang.smalltalk.squeak.beginners/2006-12/msg00098.html on a squeak-dev-118 image works until I load the package http://www.squeaksource.com/ss/GraphViz-pmm.43.mcz , which fails with a syntax error on MacOSGraphVizGenerator>>runWithSystemFramework: - Trying on the recommended squeak-dev-62 image, Monticello fails with an error when reading the KomServices package: MessageNotUnderstood: UndefinedObject>>readStream. - I try downloading the packages manually, and the web server says that http://www.squeaksource.com/ss/XML-Parser-mir.3.mcz cannot be found. So, I tried four methods of installing SqueakSource, and ran into 5 show-stoppers. Maybe somebody has already posted this, but if not here it is. http://blog.wired.com/geekdad/2007/06/just_squeaking_.html We have a blurb on the Wired website. Scratch led to Squeak. Somewhere right now people are discovering Seaside, Croquet and the OLPC (for the second time). When the Dev team completes 3.10, I'll push to have a press release written, and then petition members of this community to en mass summit the story to Slashdot. I would add to this plan a trick from NASA. Yesterday was the opening of a 90-day window of no-news. If you are a media outlet, the summer is the dead zone. NASA knows this and every year ensures that stories come out in the summer. This translates to a higher profile, which ensures budgets from the American Congress. They know what they are doing over there at NASA. My point is, if the release of 3.10 could come out during this window, and not in the Fall, we have a better chance of getting Slashdoted.
