Smalltalk Hardware Mailing List Proposal

There are quite a few people interested in Smalltalk Hardware, and a few people designing hardware for Smalltalk. Most projects focus on either Squeak or Self. Jecel currently does open smalltalk hardware projects, and I may be doing one in the fall. So, I think that a mailing list should be set up for developers and spectators who are interested in Smalltalk hardware. Does such a list already exist? Not that I know of. What should the name be? I think simply "hardware" would be fine. Where should it be hosted? Viewpoints may be more specifically interested in this project than the squeak community in general, so it perhaps should be hosted at Viewpoints. Squeak Foundation would be fine as well. Apple's bridgesupport on OS X VM?

Hi, Looks like Apple has made a complete open-source project of its bridge support for gluing other languages to Cocoa, as used in RubyCocoa and PyObjC. Adding "Sponsored by"?

Hi folks! I was wondering - would we (as in "the Squeak community") consider adding some kind of "sponsored by"-plaquets or something on www.squeak.org indicating monetary support or support services from other companies/organisations? I am asking this because the company I work for (Toolkit) is currently supporting squeak.org with 30 Gb of backup space and... well, it would be a nice argument internally. ;) Also, I think it would probably be rather simple to get a bit of monetary support with this "carrot"! regards, Göran

UTF-8 is self-synchronizing and byte-oriented, which allows a reader to be nearly stateless, and still consume much less memory that UCS-32. Plan 9 also described that, contrary to what some expect, very few programs do better with UCS-32, because very few programs really need to process the string in a non-linear way. Regular expressions and sorting are the two main exceptions. UTF-8 also allows the transition to be made slightly more smoothly, since many ASCII programs will already work with UTF-8. This is a synopsis of what I read. Is this better than using UTF32 throught the image for all Strings? One reason would be that for some chars in domestic encodings, the round-trip conversion is not exactly guaranteed; so you can avoid that problem in this way. But ohter than that, encodings only matters when the system is interfacing with the outside world. So, the internal representation can be uniform, I think. Would you write all comparison methods for all of combinations of different encodings? -- Yoshiki
