Box-Admins Team Report for May, 2007

The box-admins team is reponsible for seeing that the community shared server is maintained and setting up any new features to be hosted on that server. For May 2007: Göran Krampe discovered a temporary DOS attack on the server early in the month and blocked it restoring proper response times from the community server. Also thanks to Göran we once again have a backup for the community server. Also Marcus Denker is providing a secondary backup and the community server is going to be backing up files for squeaksource.com in reciprocation. Marcus and I are currently working out some final issues but I'm sure we will be able to work this out in June and provide a final report on this in the next installment. Also you may notice that from the list of services below www.squeakfoundation.org has been dropped. After some difficulties and discussions with the Board it was decided that at least for the time being it makes more sense for the Foundation information to be part of the Squeak.org site. You can find this under http://www.squeak.org/Foundation/ where more content should be appearing soon. I want to thank the community for the monetary support needed to fund the box and remind them that the bills continue to appear and that you can currently contribute to the hosting bills by going to http://discuss.squeakfoundation.org/ and clicking on the 'donate' button at the top right. Note that a donation here may be used for other Squeak Foundation services including but not limited to development, development infrastructure, and promotion of Squeak. Doc team April/May report

I never sent a monthly report for the month of April, so this is a two-month report. In the March report, I promised, with the help of Paul Bennet, that we would have a plan to get Seaside Documentation to a better state by the end of the Month. Paul Bennet, however, disappeared just as fast as he had appeared, so this never happened. Also, I was very busy in April finishing my school projects, so *nothing* happened April. Around the beginning of May, I began discussing on #squeak what kind of tools would make it easier for people to contribute to Squeak Documentation. The consensus seems that successful documentation for squeak would need to be as distributed, navigable, and searchable as code for squeak. Seems reasonable. Around mid-may, I was discussing this again, and Simon Michael and Ken Causey said they would lend some unofficial help. Within the last week, I started a small project to help me learn Seaside and perhaps boost the amount of testing and discussion that happens around Squeak code: adding email notification to SqueakSource commits. It should be fun. Also this month, I re-arranged the tutorial list I have been building to be more navigable: http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/792 I haven't really heard from Andrew Lawson about his Collections tutorial, or from Aaron Riechow about his screencasts for three months. Squeak magic

Hi, Please try opening the attached gif in a photo/image viewer - it is just a translucent rotated rectangle. Now import the attached gif into Squeak. Does a bluish background appear behind the rotated rectangle? On notebooks, tilt the screen forward to see it clearly. When looking at it directly, the blue background appears to fade in and fade out as you move the morph from top to bottom. It is all Squeak magic :-). The magic works on Squeakland plugin, 3.9 and 3.10 images on Linux (3.7-7) and Mac VMs (3.8). I don't know if Win32 VMs also show the same effect. Can someone confirm, please? Thanks. Monticello Versions and Bold Text

Recently, I've been having problem in some images where Monticello no long correctly bolds newer versions of code. After opening a repository, the left column now shows all loaded packages as bold rather than just loaded packages with newer versions available. The right column now bolds and underlines the loaded package, rather than just bolding newer packages as it did before. I have no idea why the sudden change, has anyone seen this before? OODBs?

I have a question for anyone who has worked on the internals of a OODB. To wit: Is the underlying data in an OODB typically stored in relational tables? If, for example, you had a "person" object, and then subclasses of "employee" and "customer", would there be three tables with the common info in "person" joined to "employee" and "customer" respectively?

Hi All, News Team Report for May 2007. Our Highest read article for May: http://news.squeak.org/2007/05/17/minding-your-business-with-smalltalk-part- 3-of-4/ had 2414 readers. This is an interview with Bert Freudenberg. Check it out if you haven't had the time to read it yet. We are getting about 200-300 hits a day. Our best day in May was 1906 readers. We were listed in the top blogs and top post on wordpress twice.
