Storing morphs displayed in the world in a GOODS db

Hi Avi, You might think me crazy for trying to store morphs in GOODS, but that exactly what I want to do. Currently, storing them works (e.g. I've tried out Morph new) as long as I don't have them displaying in the world prior to committing. With respect to ReferenceStreams, you can store a Morph or set of morphs in a stream and it appropriately does not chase the WorldMorph and try to stick that in the stream. Is there anyway you'd consider adding a special case (or showing me where I could put on) that would allow me to store Morphs in and out of GOODS so that I don't have to remove them from the world first before committing? Just let me know if this is not something you want to spend time on. I just find it would be very handy for sharing morphs that are already pre-configured on the screen in a certain way. Preference Categories

Hi, As you might know in 3.8 there will be changes to Squeak Preference core classes and new ones will be added. With Stephane we were thinking where to put them and we would like to know your opinion. These are the categories we would like to use: System-Support, for the Preference core model classes (this classes are already there in 3.7) System-Preference-UI, for the UI core classes and the legacy PreferencesPanel implementation. System-Preference-Browser, for the new PreferenceBrowser implementation. What do you think? Thanks, Regards, Hernán

Float nan at: 2 } Answer: #(#big 2146959360 0) In principle, knowing the order of bytes within a word _still_ leaves you ignorant of whether the word order for a double matches the byte order for a word. There have been machines where that was a serious issue, but I don't know if Squeak runs on any such.

Endian check for a Mac - help requested

Could somebody with a Mac (big endian machine) please evaluate the following and let me know what you get? I'm trying to finalize a FloatTest and want to make sure it's going to work on little endian and big endian boxes. { SmalltalkImage current endianness . Float nan at: 1 . Float nan at: 2 } On a little endian box, I get: #(#little 4294443008 0) Thanks, Dave

[BUG][FIX]Form > rotate... fails for subclasses

Whilst testing the upcoming multiple host OS windows code I found a couple of bugs/infelicities in Form. a) rotating a subclass of Form insisted on returning a Form. b) you couldn't rotate and magnify by a Point. So I fixed it up a bit. Now you can do things like Display rotateBy: 34 magnify: 0.3@2 smoothing:2 . The magnify code already works with Points so I just fixed the comments. Cool 3D psychadelic effects are now so much easier @-) I also note a method named #rotateBy:centerAt: which does NOT take a numeric argument for the rotation amount which is very confusing. Hmmm.....it is only 10pm here and I start to feel really tired when I think about adding a prim to get the system clock with millisecond precision. Maybe if I lay down for a bit the feeling to add a prim will go away. Have you, Avi, ever ventured into this territory -- I must say I am quite green in adding prims and would be happy to learn, but I wouldn't be very quick at it and I would probably foul it all up. Champions make things happen. I would suggest starting with a named plugin, but that's because it seems simplest to me. If a numbered prim is simpler then sure why not? I'm sure people will have lots of suggestions about the final resting place of this primitive behavior, no matter where your first version sticks it. I think the elements so far agreed upon that the primitive should return are: 1. *Micro*second precision 2. the offset to UTC 3. a short string describing the timezone, e.g. 'EST' (though I could be speaking from my own wishes, to some extent.) Note that these are all optional to various degrees. You can fill in zero for the microseconds if the OS clock is only accurate to seconds. The offset to UTC can be completely bogus and imaginary. And the timezone string can be empty if there is no way to figure it out. The important thing, IMHO, is to get the interface right, so that the details can be ironed out over time. I think you can get #1 and #2 from gettimeofday. Getting #3 I don't know about; you may wish to find the source code for the "date" utility and see how it does it. -Lex

Trying to install OmniBrowser.sar on a fully updated Squeak 3.8a gives the error "Strings only store Characters". The full debug log is attached.

A big selling point of Squeak in this class has been that the students can do large projects without having to learn lots of language syntax nor lots of specialized tools. There is one big thing that they have to learn, that Squeak *should* put in their face, and that's how to program with objects. Beyond that, everything should be as easy as possible; e.g., you execute code by do-it on the menu, you browse to any code in the system through a single browser, and lots of useful libraries just happen to be pre-loaded. In short, these guys are already working hard. There is no room to add more wonderful CS topics, unless you can think of something else that should be removed (or, unless you shrink the class project -- ick!). If you want to think of ways to move them over to Monticello, SqueakSource, and whatever other new goodies, then please be thinking about ways to use them where students don't have to really think about it. Please think of ways that the instructors can set up an image and any necessary servers, and then for everything to just work with no further though from the students. Please think in terms of replacing one current easy practice with another easy practice. To give you an idea where these students are: many of them never even learn to use *change sets*. -Lex PS -- SqueakMap, in the semesters I've seen it used, seemed to actually *lower* the amount of effort students needed, because they spent less time trawling through web sites. Kudos, Goran!! PPS -- If Mark, of all people, overlooked SqueakMap, then we need to really make sure that these new nifty tools get integrated into the normal development environment eventually. You shouldn't know you are using "Shout", "SqueakMap", "Monticello", etc. -- it should eventually be "the code browser", "the package browser", "the package browser", etc.
