Millisecond clock resolution for DateAndTime now

Hi all, I am trying to make sure I am not missing something, but I really would like DateAndTime now to return the current date/time with millisecond clock precision. I know there has been a lot of discussions on this in the past with folks desiring nanosecond precision -- but how about just millisecond precision from the system clock. Am I overlooking something or is this just not implemented on DateAndTime now? Regards, John -- Three failures denote uncommon strength. [BUG]TextMorph composeForm produces stupid extent (3.7full)

I decided to take a look at the Browser>findMethod improvements Jon H. provided a while ago. How often does one suffer a 'Space is low' when filing in a small changeset? Select the .gz file (BetterFindMethod-jon.3.cs.gz) and hit the filein button.... The #displayProgress... asks the incoming stream for a name to use. This is fine for a FileStream since it has a sensible name. Usually reasonably short. Unfortunately a ReadStream provides its #printString as a name. Dumbness number 1. So now we have a DisplayText being built with the entire changeset contents. Somehow this DisplayText, via the TextMorph used to create it, ends up with a boundingBox of, wait for it, 2359@2042 ! Thus when a Form is built it is 4817078 words in length. Now maybe on a machine with virtual memory this is an acceptable thing to do - though it will waste plenty of time at it I think - but really. Dumbness number 2. As it happens, my machine set is just able to supply the bitmap but later in the process the affected area of the screen is saved with a 'Form fromDisplay:' and making another 20Mb bitmap is too much to ask. Dumbness number 3 - why is the progress bar still working by direct blatting on Display? Clearly something very odd is happening since 'view decompressed' on the same file works perfectly - ie displaying the self-same text. Selecting the text and using 'file it in' works, with the progress bar showing 'Filing in from a Stream' rather than attempting the nonsense above. About a working group on CS->MC

Hi guys There were some discussions and attempts to see how we could use MC instead of CS for the update stream. But now the result are not clear to me. It would be nice if the interested parties could define a simple agenda and prepare some experiments so that we could have a bit more visibility for the future. Daniel, Avi? Others? I would really like to see this happening in a safe way :) so we need some coordination/preparation/ agenda/results Stef

About the clean of SystemDictionary

Hi all we the KCP team are cleaning the kernel of squeak not for fun nor for the beauty (ok sometimes I think that we need beauty to dream about new languages since they should be even more beautiful). Now we would like to have squeak as a system that can mutate over the next 20 next years. We want to use squeak to dream about new languages and so on. For that we need clean code (such as the AST visitor because to check literal or whatever we do not want to have a recompile and fix ugly code everywhere). Now we would like to be able to define new kernel inside squeak: yes a different Object and Class classes. for that we need to clean SystemDictionary but we would like to avoid to impact anybody else and still have a good system at the end. After trying last year (with some successes and some lose of brain cells for example Beeper), we would like to fix that class once for all. Here is the plan: - 1 introduce a clean namespace class: (warning warning not something complex, no composition, no nesting, no inheritance.... just a class that holds binding but does not inherits from Dictionary and has a cool interface and not 12 responsibilities) - 2 delegates from system dictionary to it Namespace smalltalk would return Smalltalk - 3 fixes all the ugly Smalltalk at: ...to use the new interface of Namespace but keeping the old ones in SystemDict so that people can still load their code without any problems Note that point 4 and 5 should be atomic - 4 deprecate everything "move" **everything** from SystemDictionary to SmalltalkImage and other classes - 5 then introduce Smalltalk as a pointer to SmalltalkImage default this way after this period of time: - Smalltalk will work for old code - Smalltalk will be not a subclass of Dictionary - We will have a clean Namespace and the tools using it - And Smalltalk/SmalltalkImage will be clean. the plan for 3.8 (from marus and stef)

hi guys We think that this is important that we build some plans for 3.8. As we already mentioned it, if someone needs urgently 3.8, he should do it. We (marcus doug and me) would like to rest a bit and get some real stuff done. We discuss with diego and others about a good date and the idea would be to have 3.8beta the 15th of november and 3.8 ready for 15 of december. (no gamma phase this time). We lose too much time with that. Just some tentative images. In addition to m17n, what we would like to see with this version: - services (so please have a look and comment) - shout (already ready to go as package) - OmniBrowser (with refactorings :)) - refactorings integrated with services in all the browers - a lot of fixes (so please continue to review and give your point of view!) - a lot of tests we need more!!! Really everybody can write tests. - excellent diego look - more AST and compiler cleans (I should check with marcus): the AST of RB + visitor is already in so consider to see if you can use it for your tool. - new preference browser - clean of the system dictionary (see my next email) - SM20 with configuration (yes yes) - we are thinking having SmallLand as full image but we will see if diego has still the steam for that. But indeed now the unstable stream idea is really helping us. I certainly forgot stuff. But this is important that we have a clear date in mind, so as you may have noticed the harvesting is going much faster than ever and ned is not back yet :) Again we would need a Etoy and multimedia guide. I repeat We need a Etoy guide and Multimedia guide. I suggest the cool ones in the community to try SqueakUnstable (which is quite stable since now). Stef

Q: How can I drop an object reference into a Workspace?

Hi again, Here I am again with another newbie question. I am sure this is as silly as my last one, but the answer eludes me. Let's say I have constructed an object. I also have a Workspace open (or an inspector on another unrelated object). How can I place a reference to the first object into the workspace, for example to use as an argument to a message? I want to reference an object in a context where it is not bound to any variable that I know of. I don't want to dig through some data structures by code to find the object, but rather pick the object to reference with the mouse. Failing that, is there anything like the outliners in self? With support for linking objects to slots by dragging small blocks with the mouse. // Anders
