ImageSegments on Linux?

Hi people! I have been busy moving over to Linux on my desktop (yay!) and just as I compiled my own VM (running Lunar Linux so everything is compiled from source on this box) and then tried to fire up SqueakMap it failed! It seems like ImageSegments don't want to load! The primitive fails. I even tested by creating a small Project, saved it on disk and tried to open it - same problem. Granted I am on a "weird platform" - Lunar Linux isn't really mainstream :) - and perhaps one of my optimization options for GCC creates this problem, but I have tested going down from O2 to O0 and some other tests - but no go. Any hints? regards, Göran

[BUG][FIX] Class>>rename fix 6/2004

In using the SystemChangeNotifier to detect class renames. This caused me a problem because the signal occurs when the rename is partially complete, so the environment is in an inconsistent state when it enters handler methods. The inconsistency is that the new name of the class is not set by the time the handler methods run. The Smalltalk global dictionary has been updated, so (Smalltalk at: #RenamedClass) name ~= #RenamedClass. This is an inconsistent state of the Smalltalk dictionary which causes my program grief. It should either be a true post-op, this fix makes it a post-op.

Squeak noob question - initialize

Hi. Long time programmer, new to smalltalk. I'm trying to do the simplest thing, but there is clearly some basic concept that I'm missing here. I'm running Squeak 3.6. In short, I have ClassA and ClassB, which is a subclass of Class A. Each class has one variable, and when I create the class I'd like to see the initialization methods run on both classes. When I execute: b _ ClassB new initialize I expected that both classes would be initialized. What actually happens is that only ClassB is initialized. Here is the source code. Hi Randy, I have controlled my Mindstorms 1.2 (?) version with Squeak (see the page at http://minnow.cc.gatech.edu/squeak/2412) but I was using a serial-connected tower. 3.7a on Linux: A few install notes and problems

Hello, After a while I found time to get back to playing with Squeak, and yesterday tried to install Squeak 3.7 beta on SuSE 8.2 from this site: http://www-sor.inria.fr/~piumarta/squeak/ I used the RPM versions of "3.7b-5 Unix VM", "Squeak3.7b-5868.image" and "SqueakV3.sources". Providing I am not misunderstanding something, I have two notes on the installation: First it is confusing that user has to manually unzip the "Squek*.changes.gz" and "Squeak*.image.gz" AFTER the installation .. second that perhaps a start-squeak.sh should be provided. To start Squeak I run /usr/lib/squeak/3.7b-5/squeak /usr/lib/squeak/squeak.image Squeak starts, and after clicking on "The Worlds of Squeak" project, the maximized project shows, but after that: - Games and 3D projects are empty - is that expected? - When clicking on the "Graphics" project, everything freezes. I tried to update to a newer image to see if some of the above would be fixed, but do not know how to do it ... as well perhaps the fact that the "Games" and "3D" priojects are empty has something to do with the "base vs. complete image" but do not understand enough about it to install the "complete" image. This may be known issues by now as the rpms are from April, but perhaps it helps as a "bug report", Thanks, Milan

Hi Randy, I spent some days to make this piece of code works with my serial IR tower and cleaning up a bit. My goal is to create an eToys interface to interact with and program the bots. As soon as I finish my current project (Video4Linux support in Squeak) I'll resume the project. I have not an USB IR tower, so I'll first work on the serial support first. Loops in Smalltalk

I read an article about the new version of Dataflex, where it said that the time it took to do 5000 get/set operations had been reduced from 58 to 3 seconds. I read it like: set and get an instance variable on an object 5000 times, but I presume that something more advanced is going on (otherwise, it's not that impressive). But this got me wondering: how long does it take in Smalltalk? So, I made a small class, with one instance variable: instancevar, and three methods: instancevar, instancevar: and runTest. The two former just gets/sets instancevar, and runTest does: runTest | anInt | ^ Time millisecondsToRun: [1 to: 5000 do: [:z | self instancevar: z. anInt := self instancevar. Transcript show: anInt printString; cr]] Now, I didn't have the "Transcript show" in it the first time I ran it. Squeak printed: 1 Dolphin printed: 1 Question 1: Very nice. But am I missing something, where the compiler figures out that my instancevar is not used for anything else, and ignores it? Next, I put the "Transcript show" in (I know, I know, that's not exactly testing the loop itself). Squeak printed: 125585 Dolphin printed: 20711 Presumably Dolphin is faster because it is targeted at Windows. Question 2: After "5000" was printed, both systems took a couple of seconds to come alive again (i.e. in Squeak, everything froze, in Dolphin, I got an hourglass). What were they doing?
