3D controls

I remember reading some time ago a conversation about 3D controls - in other words, ways of using mice to control a 3D environment - Croquet in the discussion. I seem to recall Andreas Raab talking about using the concept of rotating cylinders in contact with each other to do something or other. Does anyone have any links to this thread, or remember more than my pitiful recollection? frank

Accessing Excel sheets

Hi, I need to develop an application that needs to access MS Excel spreadsheets. I am very new to Smalltalk - Squeak and Morphic but I nevertheless think that I'll manage to write that app in Squeak, the biggest obstacle right know is accessing those spreadsheets, no clue sofar. Any tip would be truly appreciated, thank upfront Günther

[ANN] Shout (Syntax Highlighting as you type), version 3 now available

Shout.3 is now available on SqueakMap and SqueakSource. This version no longer Syntax Highlights Workspaces, which proved to be annoying when editing text. Instead, an optional ShoutWorkspace package has been added which allows a Syntax Highlighted Workspace to be opened from the World,open... menu. Hi, I've installed YAXO 2.0b and found a error. If you "print it": XMLDOMParser parseDocumentFrom: '<a>" this is a comment. "</a>' readStream => '<a>& this is a comment. "</a>' The first " changes to &... Cheers, --- [:masashi | ^umezawa]

Hi Avi, Ambrai Smalltalk has been in development for a LONG time (since about 1998 if I remember correctly). It is the work of only two guys with more or less, one working mostly on VM type things and both working on image side stuff. They gave a presentation/demonstration at the Ottawa-Carleton Smalltalk Users Group last fall. I believe it's long history is why it is carbon and not cocoa. I think they already had a lot of code written pre-OS X. One thing that bothered me about it is that native UI widgets don't get garbage collected - you have to manage that yourself. From what they said at the presentation this is fairly common with native UI's. Most of my experience is with Smalltalk/V (pre-Windows) and Squeak, so I haven't really seen how others deal with this. Yes, although I think we can do much better at native OS X UI in Squeak with the Objective C bridge, because we have access to the full AppKit class library rather than going through the C API as Ambrai does. There are lots of nice things about Ambrai, but I'm bewildered that they chose to use Carbon instead of Cocoa for the UI. For those of us who care about such things, I think there's potentially a very nice model there for commercial use of Squeak: develop web apps on OS X using a native UI environment, and then deploy headless on linux or any other platform you care for. The issue is that if the last case in a case statement returns from the method, the decompiler gets confused trying to parse the otherwise: branch. This changeset has the decompiler track all non-return exits from the case statement, so that it has enough information to do a right thing. The changeset also adds a couple of methods that the decompiler is relying on. After loading this changeset, Ned's example decompiles correctly. Also, decompiling and recompiling everything leaves a running system.
