A new user question

Hello, I just downloaded the Squeak software. My goal is to learn to create projects similar to driving the racing car example in the scripts section of Squeak and then teach high school students to create their own projects. I would appreciate if you let me know where to start. Do you think the required skills for writing scripts are beyond the high school students abilities. Thanks, Behnam.

[updates] Nearly final 3.2

Folks - Along with the updates for 3.3a, I've also forwarded a whole bunch for 3.2gamma heh heh. This is a point where all the class builder work and all the VMMaker work is supposedly in good shape, so it's definitely a propitious time to tie a ribbon around it. PLEASE: Get these updates and test the result, *especially* if you're a VM hacker. Does anyone know fixes to the simulator or tracer that should go in? Scott and I will be doing some final housekeeping for 3.2 in the next couple of days, so this is the time to find (and fix) any little problems. Thanks in advance for any testing or other suggestions regarding the final 3.2. - Dan

Sunit explained

Hi I realized that lot of people were convinced about the need of tests but were not really aware how to use SUnit. (Also lot of people are too buzy to bet on the possibility to change their applications, they prefer to be blind and say: "I would love to write tests but I cannot afford to spent that much time") Then they were not really using it. Today I spent (too much time) to write an english version of an article I wrote in french recently. Keyboard - mouse interface fail on linux install

Hello everybody, i am a newbie curious about Squeak, so i downloaded v3.1beta and installed it on my PC (i run Linux Mandrake). Everything went smoothly, but now i am on the Squeak interface, i have all the windows and all, but my mouse and the keyboead seem screwed up. That means, that for ex. when i left-click on the background i should get this "World" menu, right? It just selects the whole Window with the little colored dots around. The right button acts as the left one.It is the middle button which lets me select commands. So i thought it was just the buttons that were mismatched. But the middle button on the background gives me only a "personal" menu. I tried too "Ctrl+left-click" it gave me yet another menu "World", but not the main one that was described. The keyboard also does not respond. Also when i am in a text box (for exemple a search or edit box), the keyboard does not give anything, but seems to react to commands, as if i were pressing alt+letter or ctrl+letter. For example, when i am in the main window, typing 'm' directly gives the menu "add a new morph". Do you have an idea of what's going on? Thxs

Squeak lockup

I am running Squeak 3.1 (updated to latest updates) on Mandrake Linux 8.2. I'm finding that everything is fine after I set up an image, then a day or two later it seems to lock up and starts using 98% of the cpu. Does anyone have any ideas about how I can avoid this? Peter Robin Canberra Australia

Hello: I know that I can call Squeak, by example as: squeak image script.st arg1 arg2 arg3 Supposing that arg1 arg2 and arg3 are receiver, subject and data to build a mail that I want to send with SMTPSocket, how I must build de script to read these arguments and next send the mail?. My test had added 4600 items to DependentsFields and then timed Object flushDependents -- about 6 seconds. When I saw you actually had more than 4600 items total, I counted up what was in your jpeg and tried again with 7532 items in DependentsFields. This time it took 61 seconds! Looks like you have crossed a threshhold where the 12-bit identity hash values stop being reasonably efficient and result in lots of re-probing. So, yes, try reparenting the wrappers from Model or just implement #myDependents and #myDependents: so as to avoid inheriting anything you don't need (there may be some isKindOf: Model tests out there somewhere). MP3 and ID3v2 - Fixed!

I'm not the praying type, but first, let me offer a prayer that God may deliver me from all C code for the rest of eternity. Yeah, I can do it. I'd even go so far as to say the hacks I've done are relatively elegant. But, jeez, it's like pulling teeth sometimes after having done Smalltalk for a year now. Anyway, in a case of missing the forest for the trees, I spent the last couple of *weeks* trying to figure out why the changes I made to mpeg3io.c and mpeg3io.h were simply not working. After litteriing the *entire* source tree with fprintfs, unsuccessfully trying to run gdb on the entire VM and countless hours of virtual debugging in the shower, I finally figured out that, somehow, my freshly compiled VM (in ~/dev/3.2.1) was referencing the Mpeg3Plugin.dll lying around somewhere under my image dir (in /mnt/c/Program Files/squeak). I deleted the plugin DLL and whoopeee! I can now hear the song I've been longing to hear for about a month in Squeak. One baby step closer to the Squeak uber-media box (which I'm thinking of calling STORMS - Smalltalk Object Remote-controlled Media System). (If the mpeg stuff is compiled into the image now anyway, why *would* it be referencing the dll?) So the question is - where do I send the patch? Is it too soon to ask for CVS access (since VorbisPlugin is next)? Either way, please let me know. What I think is going on is that once an attempt to open a file for reading has failed (e.g., because the file is not there), then all subsequent attempts to create new files for writing will fail. The only slightly unusual thing about my setup is that the current directory has the Macintosh option-f (folder) character (asciiValue 196) as the final character of its name. However, this character has never caused a problem previously. Andrew
