[ANN] NetMorph - Morphic on the Net

Hi, We are developing a Morphic extension called NetMorph. In NetMorph, Morph is no longer 'a bird in a cage'. It can go out from the local desktop and freely crawls 'across the universe' (many desktops). Screenshots are available on wiki: http://swikis.ddo.jp/NetMorph The system is still in beta but we are aiming at extremely intuitive distributed environment. I think it's important to recognize that DLL Hell is not just a technical problem. People treat it like a technical problem because the social assumption is not likely to ever change - You will never have the code for the VB runtime DLLs, and Microsoft does NOT care to change it just so some competitors applications will run better. That's not the world we live in with Squeak. And though SqueakMap will allow people to develop packages more independently, since they don't have to be accepted into the image, the point is not that everybody should now do whatever they want. As a community, we need to solve the social problem, and COOPERATE. For example, SqueakMap broke compatibility, SMLoader needed to make a syncronized release, so, we just did. Given cooperation and open source, the problems that remains are much much smaller, and the payoff from enabling coexistance of multiple versions in the same live image goes right down with it. I think our problems are in helping us cooperate more strongly, and letting more of us help more easily (for example, by maintaining some application that's currently in the image and therefore has to be integrated by SqC), and not in helping us ignore one another (which is obviously important in a commercial setting). I am working on a fairly large package for Squeak, and thought I would be releasing it as modules. I don't have any useful technical input on which modules system should be implemented, but since things appear uncertain again I'd like to list my needs for a module system. I am working on a new version of BobsUI. BobsUI is a more traditional set of widgets to do business type programming in Squeak. The prerequisites: - Morphic - Yaxo XML - Morphic Wrappers BobsUI modules: - A delta module for some method additions. - Runtime module - Development module - User created BobsUI modules Morphic, Yaxo, and Morphic wrappers are packages that are prerequisites, and I must assume that they will continue to be updated, independently of the BobsUI package. BobsUI itself is split in half, with a runtime side and a development side. I have always assumed that a mostly bare image would start, and then loads the necessary modules. So the difference between the production side and the development side is how much gets loaded into the image. Also any user of BobsUI would likely have to load in other modules, such as for database access. It isn't terribly complex, but I hope that whatever is chosen will be able to handle these requirements. Thanks, Doug R.

It has sort of always been a habit to put it in there. The point of it is that since a PS appears below the signing this, as Patrik already explained, clarifies that the PS was written by the same person. Postscripts are, as a rule, written by the same person who wrote the rest of the letter/message. Why call out the (overwhelmingly) commonest case for special treatment? It is postscripts written by someone _else_ that need to be flagged. In printed material, it is customary to indicate material written by someone else by putting their role [Ed] or their initials [D.S., for example] there; so to me, putting "DS" at the end of a postscript could only mean that the postscript was written by someone with initials "DS" who HADN'T written the body of the message. In a message written in English, abbreviations other than English or Latin ones are bound to confuse people rather than "clarify" anything. Another thing - what kind of mailinglist greetings do you use? As a native speaker of English, I find "greetings" out of place in messages sent to mailing lists. If one _must_ have such a thing, what's wrong with "Dear readers" or "Dear Squeakers"? Dan uses the "Hi folks!" greeting which is neutral in gender etc. It is perhaps a little too informal and culture-bound. Imagine a stranger coming up to you and saying "Hey, cuzzie!". I often like to write "Hi guys!" but somehow (even if it isn't gender specific in speech nowadays - I have been told) in writing it does seem to imply males to me. Or does it? Would it be "kosher" to use that? "guys" may be gender-neutral, but "guy" is not. Guy is a man's name. In fact, in a few days' time we here will be celebrating the most famous Guy of all time, although perhaps the Americans will criticise us for remembering a terrorist. However, the word "guy" has some rather unfortunate connotations. 1. A "guy" is "a rope, chain, rod, or wire attached to something as a brace or guide", hence "to guy something" is "to steady, or reinforce with a guy". "Hi, ropes"? 2. A "guy" is an effigy displayed and burned as part of November 5th celebrations. "Hi, soon-to-be-burned effigies"? 3. To "guy" someone is "to make fun of" or "ridicule" them. Hence a "guy" is the butt of ridicule. "Hi, dumbos"? 4. A "guy" can be "a person of grotesque appearance". It's not clear to me that this is really different from sense 3. "Hi, freaks"? 5. A "guy" can be "a man or boy (an informal use)". 6. "In informal *American* English, you can address a group of people as guys or you guys, whether they are male or female." 7. A "fall guy" can be the victim of a deception or a scapegoat; typically made a scapegoat by means of a deception. "Hi, dupes"? As a homebrewed variant I have been using "Hi all!" but it limps a bit (might be a Swedish saying). :-) While pointless, it is at least inoffensive. After checking around it also seems that most people think it should be "PPS" as in "post post scriptum". But somewhere I saw that it could mean "post scriptum secundum". Of course, in e-mail we are at liberty to fold our postscripts back into the body of the text without tearing up any pages or re-penning anything...

Regarding hardware interfaces changing faster than software interfaces: My experience has been that we need new connectors because the existing connectors are either too big or too small, or have the wrong plating material on the pins, or in some other way don't "exactly" meet the requirement, and costs can be optimized by creating a custom connector. So I don't know if the issue is speed of change, and further, software is easier to change, so I think software interfaces *can* change more rapidly (i.e. within a single iteration of a product design), and there is usually a strong economic incentive to NOT change the hardware interface once it has been defined. >Greetings, > >Stephan > >PS: Your mail without line breaks at 76 chars or so wasn't very easy for me >to reply to with good readability... Squeak on Linux DVD

Just thought I'd mention this Squeak sighting. There is a UK Linux magazine called Linux Format, which usually comes with a CD or DVD of free linux stuff. In the October issue, Squeak was included on the DVD.

This has been integrated into DVS 1.37, now posted to SqueakMap. SAR archives produced this way are also now, if you have DVS installed, cleanly upgradable - filing in a new version of a .sar over an old one will make the appropiate removals as well as additions. newbie looking for fonts

Where might I find some additional fonts for Squeak 3.2? I have found some font stuff at: http://minnow.cc.gatech.edu/squeak/1406#Fonts But it all seems old and/or broken.
