If you have access to the compilers and other program requirements the you can set up your own directory structure in your home directory and modify either the Makefiles, Configure, or Configure.in scripts for those directory structures. If you have priveledges to the /usr/local/ directories you may even be able to use those. Not going 'su root' will only prevent other users accessing your Squeak program HTH John

After downloading the new updates, "about this system..." tells me the latest update is 3880, but my transcript window shows that I got updates through 3888. Does this mean something is wrong? Thanks, Duane

Of course 2.4.3 fixes that, but then the serial ports stop working... ;) Ah, the cutting edge of life... University policy is that if a Unix machine is connected to the University network, *only* department's designated sysadmin may know the root password, even if you own the machine. This is for network security/integrity reasons. Of course, the Mac sitting beside it is wide open, and Windows boxes are hospitable to every passing virus, but that's our IT Services for you.

The image<->VM interface only uses ony function, but in Morphic, drawing is done on Canvas's using commands like "draw a line" and "draw text with this font". Unless you are using bitmaps, then the "draw a line" style commands are more efficient than the single forceToScreen() primitive that is used between image and VM. (On the other hand, the bits have to be put on the display eventually, and so forceToScreen() works just fine on local machines). To get to the point, why not use Nebraska?! It's pretty zippy for working with text windows, and it's had very little work put into optimization. I'd think it's better to start with Nebraska and optimize it, than to start with a model that doesn't fit morphic very well. The only thing that bugs me is that nobody every implemented a password system... For that sole reason, I don't tend to leave it running, myself. -Lex

If you've had prior versions of my Connectors loaded, this should make everything work OK. from preamble: "Change Set: DeinstallOldConnectors-nk Date: 4 April 2001 Author: Ned Konz This removes a number of methods that prevent newer versions of my NewConnectors changesets/projects from working correctly. If you're having problems with the wiring MakerButtons not drawing lines, this should help. "!
