Just wanted to say that this is pretty cool. Of the two methods described, I prefer the Trampoline object because it can handle messages with arguments succinctly. For example: | myNumbers | myNumbers := #(6 4 1 3). myNumbers select > 3. myNumbers select between: 2 and: 5. Now tell me that last one doesn't read like plain English! (okay, it's partly luck, but...) I noticed one minor downside to the Trampoline versus the other methods, which is that you can't pass messages to it which Object happens to understand, such as 'asString' (since the Trampoline uses #doesNotUnderstand:). I wonder if there's any way around that. Also, if this ever gets fleshed out and to the point that it might be considered as an addition to the base image, I'd probably go with just adding one of these methods... Smalltalk usually avoids having several very similar ways of doing the same thing. "better" index to the mailing list archive?

Hi, I no longer have time to subscribe to this mailing list, but from time to time I like to drop by the archive to see how things are progessing. I just tried it and find it difficult to deal with because I'm presented with the oldest messages first and even the index only presents 20-100 messages at a time, oldest first. I got tired of hitting "next page" before I got beyond mid 1998. Perhaps some links that start in the list at least at the beginning of each year (or month even) could be created to ease getting to more recent messages? If not, could the date index be switched to go from latest backwards? I probably won't see the replies, since I'm not subscribed, but I'll check back periodically. (Hmmm, will it even post the message?) Thanks. joe davison

Someone suggested in the PWS mailing list to try using the v2.0 VM with my 2.2 image. I tried this and I got the performance back. I haven't tried to run PWS under Squeak 2.4. PWS Resource Utilization

When I start PWS, performance throughout the rest of my Squeak environment takes a nose dive. Simple things like selecting a window have a noticeable delay. I tried tweaking the secondsBetweenBackups := 1 * (60 * 60) and the Delay forMilliseconds: 100 behaviors in the loopOnPort:loggingTo: method but to no avail. Any suggestions? TIA, Laurence

Event triggers - new improved diet lite...

Here is the new version of publish-subscribe. It is identical to the previous version, with some methods removed, simplified or renamed. Some extraneous testing variables and methods have been taken out. In short - less fat, better for you :-) Is there a site I can upload this to - where, how? I am running it with no problems, but would like to hear of any bugs - particularly with Semaphore deadlocks, or failures in garbage collection.... Peter. Consider the following example in C++: Track *pTrack; pTrack := new Track; pTrack := new Track; The code above 'loses' the memory allocated by the first 'new'. In the case of the C++ code the memory is permanently lost with no hope of being reclaimed, until the process making the allocation terminates. You need to add your tracks to something which will maintain a reference to them, then maintain a reference to whatever it is that holds your tracks. Quite commonly your data model will be referenced by your user interface, which is referenced by the Smalltalk system, and thus things hang together. When I'm developing code I usually (but not always :-) write the data model first, exercising it from a workspace. Hi Squeakers; I just started using the SMTPSocket. I succeed in sending myself an email, but I always get : "Send thread was not closed upon socket destroy" in the error box. How comes ? Is there an easy fix ? Thanks!
