The problem I thought of when I sent an email to Umezawa-san was StandardFileStream>>open:forWrite: *sometimes* returns nil (silently) *even if* just after StandardFileStream class>>isAFileNamed: returning true. It seems to me that the following statement: ---------------------- (StandardFileStream isAFileNamed: fileName) ifTrue: [^ StandardFileStream new open: fileName forWrite: aBoolean]. ---------------------- is considered to be an "idiom" to open a file without fail. However, what isAFileNamed: does is to try to open a file with open:forWrite: and to see the result (and close), and virtually, the result is unpredictable. You might want to play around with this a little: Luciano Notarfrancesco has ported rsynth to Squeak some time ago, and now I've found some time to make a plugin primitive for the most compute-intensive part. Download http://www.httg.de/~hmm/squeak/SpeechSynthesis.zip, compile the plugin (sorry it's not there yet, I will fix that soon) and use cmd-t to let it speak selected text. Have fun! Hans-Martin

In the former case, an API call copys the image from CCD to the Zaurus' image format (5-6-5 little endian image), and then it is copyed into Squeak's Bitmap. Roughly speaking, the primitive call takes 200 milliseconds for a 160@120 image and 300 millis for a 320@240 image. In the latter case, the primitive is looks like: ---------------- ioCameraTakePicture(...) { ConfigCamera(..., DIRECTMODE, ...); /* (1) */ while (ShutterButtonPressed()) ; copyTheImageToSqueakBitmap(); /* (2) */ ConfigCamera(..., NODIRECTMODE, ...); /* (3) */ } ---------------- The API call (1) let the CCD image to be copyed to LCD without any software intervention. The empty while statement waits until the shutter button pressed and (2) function copy the image into Squeak's Bitmap. I can't count the frame rate for this case, but is may be 20/sec or something. I did't write the network support code yet, but it is possible to run PWS on ICRUISE. Each time the request coming, the PWS could send back a photo to the requester. [BUG] Problem creating FileStream on Macs?

Just wanted to forward this problem report on to the list, in case anyone knows more about this. (Maybe this is already a known problem, I'm not sure.) By the way, Dandelion looks like a great tool for outputting Smalltalk classes/methods source code, if nothing else. It seems to be a problem of Squeak2.4 on Mac. According to Ohshima, Squeak 2.4 on Mac sometimes fails to create an instance of FileStream. It silently returns nil, instead of a FileStream. Squeak controlling a digital camera

Hi, I wrote several primitives for ICRUISE PDA to manipulate a digital camera which comes with it. Now, Squeak has a capability to control an 850k pixel digital camera! Attached is a picture I took by the camera. You'll find nested recursive rectangles in the picture. In fact, the picture is the screen of Squeak which is going to take itself on a mirror:-) (The picture is out of focus because the auto focus function doesn't seem work for the image on a mirror.) The following is the expression I evaluated to take the picture: -------------------- f _ Form extent: 320@240 depth: 16. "a form where the result will be stored" camera _ DigitalCamera startCameraOn: 1 size: 320@240 zoom: 1.0 depth: 16. "create a camera object" camera takePictureInto: f buffering: true buffer: (200@200 extent: 320@240). "this primitive call doesn't return until the shutter button is pressed" camera release. "release the hardware resource" -------------------- It is also possible to get the image on the CCD one after another. So I can make a short slow-motion movie by evaluating the following: -------------------- fs _ (1 to: 20) collect: [:i | Form extent: 160@120 depth: 16]. camera _ DigitalCamera startCameraOn: 1 size: 160@120 zoom: 1.0 depth: 16. 1 to: 20 do: [:i | camera PeekOn: (fs at: i)]. camera release. 1 to: 20 do: [:i | (fs at: i) display. (Delay forMilliseconds: 100) wait]. -------------------- It's fun! Apart from the camera stuff, with a hardware that has 120MHz SH-3, 8MB DRAM, and 640*480*16 LCD, I found I feel it practical to use Squeak on ICRUISE. A "message send" is also an object, and can be captured for replay later, or constructed so that the reciever issues it later, or for meta-protocols like the debugger. (Yes, for optimization, a message send is normally not fully objectified until something unordinary happens, but this is transparent.) And, as already said, a "message send" is a late-binding operation, but that's mostly to make it transparent about how the receiver implements the object. So, perhaps some core part of message send is like a subroutine call, but I fear you lose all the more interesting parts of a message send by the very bizarre mantra you are quoting of "a message send is *just* a subroutine call". It's not. Stop deluding yourself. If you call it a subroutine call, you might as well go all the way to Turing-equivalent, and then you lose all of why Smalltalk *is* unique. -- Name: Randal L.
