Preparing for OOPSLA

Folks - While The Squeak Team decided not to submit any paper this year to the OOPSLA technical program, we will all be there (Alan may not make it), and we are planning to host a "Birds of a Feather" (BOF) session tentatively sheduled for Tuesday evening, October 20th. We plan to give a few demos in Squeak 2.2, show some forthcoming features in 2.3, and say a few words about what else we are working on for the next few months. We have in mind a session of roughly 90 minutes, and we hope to be able to cover our material in half that time. We would be interested to see demos or brief presentations from other people in the Squeak community in the remainder of the available time (which could probably stretch beyond 90 minutes if there is continuing interest). If you would like to present some of your work, please send a brief message summarizing Presenter Topic Equipment needs Time needed. This will help us to ensure a reasonable process during the time available. We plan to have a couple of Mac G3 PowerBooks, and a nice projection display as well. Hopefully with a bit of advanced planning, we can get most of the demo software installed on these machines before we leave for Vancouver. If you reply directly to me, rather than to the Squeak list, I can send out a summary in a few days to reduce traffic on the mail list. Thanks in advance. - Dan (for The Squeak Team)

[mini] fileIn so you can add classes

The mini image of the week wouldn't allow me to accept a new class. Below is a fileOut of changes made by filing in methods from the full 2.2 image. The fileIn increased the image size from 565K to 636K. It isn't as tight as it could be, because sometimes I filed in whole protocols. I also haven't gone through the roll-your-own scripts to find out where these messages are removed. Line Feeds and Formatting

Two items. I had a couple of change sets from 2.1, when 2.2 came out I filed them out. Then I filed them back in. But now the methods appear to have no line feeds in them. This is on a Mac, what gives? Which brings me to item two. Am I the only one that uses the format menu option? As valuable as it is (to me), I'm surprised that it is under the more menu, and there's no apparent short cut key for this either. Everytime I want to format and accept, I have to do a number of more accurate than I would like clicks to get the code to look nice. Of course, given the above, it doesn't currently matter. :( Travis Griggs

Simple Question

Could some kind soul give me a little hand up with this very simple task that is none the less baffling me: Could you show me a code snippet that will allow me to: Open an existing file for reading Open a new file for writing Read the input file a line at a time Write the line into the output file I'm lost trying to locate this in the myriad of classes. Is there anyway to assemble a morph then somehow turn it into an openAsMorph method so that I can make many of them? - What's the advantage of naming the components? A request for future Squeak releases

I hope this is a pretty simple request. Are there any plans to update the VM sources & CodeWarrior project file (generated by InterpreterSupportCode class macArchiveBinaryFile) to be usable with a more recent version of CodeWarrior? One issue is the project file itself. It cannot be opened (or converted) by versions of the IDE newer than 1.7.x. This would be every version of the IDE since CW Pro 1. The next issue is that of the Metrowerks Standard Libraries versus the old ANSI libraries. Some time ago, Metrowerks transitioned over to a C runtime library of their own creation, abandoning their existing ANSI libraries. A user that doesn't have access to an older release of CodeWarrior won't be able to get the old ANSI libraries. There also seems to be a (somewhat puzzling) problem with the inclusion of MacTypes.h. The compiler barfs on the definition of true & false within MacTypes.h -- even with the compiler preference "Enable bool Support" turned off. To work around this, I set MacHeaders.h as the "prefix file" in the preferences. This meant I had to edit the sources to eliminate the inclusion of MacHeaders.h in those files that explicitly included it. One last edit to the sources was necessary. In sqMacSound.c, it was necessary to change the defintion of "junk" in snd_Stop from long to unsigned long. I know you guys are busy with the meat of Squeak, but making it easy for new Squeakers to get into areas such as recompiling the VM would hopefully reduce your workload in the long run. Jay O'Conor

You asked about features for Squeak. I would love to see a simple and robust event model. Something along the line of Dolphin, with a trigger: #this method that gets sent to dependents. The GC should be smart enough to clean up objects only referenced as dependents, so that the programmer is never forced to type 'remove dependents'. Something along the line: when: x send: y to: z with: zz Moreover, it would be great to see this as dynamic. By dynamic I mean that the message (y) and the receiver (z) and parameter (zz) are all evaluated AT the time the trigger event occurs. As far as I know, the other Smalltalks do not do this dynamically. I suspect such a framework will be more flexible than the changed / update approach Peter
