Just running Squeak and browsing around should be OK, but I wouldn't recommend doing any serious development using it (and I wouldn't do any updates using it) -- there is a bug in its cacheing of class structure such that redefining a class with a number of subclasses can cause it to crash. [Ian Piumarta is using his time to create a totally new JitterII (which should give a much more substantial performance increase than Jitter did) instead of chasing this problem.] -- Dwight

The Squeak.ini file on Windows isn't new (it's been there back from 1.3x). You can use the V2.1 Jitter on the 2.2 images. In case you haven't noticed, the VM executable is named 'SqueakBeta' and that's what it is. The final version has still to come. As to comparing Perl and Smalltalk, they're definitely aimed differently and have significantly different look-and-feels. On unix systems I see two kinds of development environments -- What I might call "separable" and "unitary". Most C environments are separable, all smalltalks I'm familiar with are unitary. The separable environments may have be unified with a GUI window manager, but the individual components can be run independently, and the applications one creates are also independent of the development environment. The unitary environments have all the components as part of the same application/environment, and the applications one create are also part of that application. It is possible, generally to create an new application that runs in a, probably modified, clone of the development environment/application, but taht takes extra work. Perl is a separable (and I've only seen it separated) type environment. Smalltalk, Lisp, Forth, and AP/L are almost always unified. Java seems to be in the separable camp. The unified languages, including smalltalk, seem to be unified in another way, too, not related to environment -- they tend to have a relatively simple programming model and syntax -- they're small enough to hold in your head and you can reason about how things work without too much effort, once you know the basic model. I'd put Java in this camp, and probably the languages, such as C and Pascal, for which one can write a fairly simple grammer. Some of the others, Perl included, are much more "ad hoc" -- they just grew -- and are much harder to hold in your head, because there are lots of special cases. Perl, Tcl, and C++ I'd put in this pile. If you're going to be doing something for which regular expression string matching would be useful, I doubt you can beat Perl -- I've not used Icon recently, so it's possible it would be a contender for pattern matching in strings, but I'm not sure. Speaking of regular expressions, Has anyone built what they think is a nice regular expression capability into any OO system? How did you fit them into objects? I built Regex and Matcher classes in C++. I tend to think of the Matcher as a ReadStream on a String. The Matcher has a Regex, which encapsulates the knowledge of how to compile and execute regular expressions. The Matcher uses the Regex whenever the "nextMatch" method is called? joe

Late binding benefits probably aren't just limited to GUI development (although it's an obvious win there). I suppose it's an advantage whenever you have to work with larger software tool-kits. With Objective-C (see http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/devel/lang/objc/), which is ST-derived, you have a little bit better integration with the operating system, at least in my experience, but at some expense of malleability (something like Squeak is 100% smalltalk so it's very flexible!).

Release 2.2 available for Acorn

I finally got time to build a new image and VM for Acorns. Still no serial or sound stuff, so if you wants it, you writes it. System call and little endian bitblt stuff are all there, but I haven't done the lebb stuff for the jpeg reader yet - some webpages will look a trifle odd until I do. Nevermind - most web pages look pretty odd whatever browser you use... As before it should work on NCs with the standard setups. [Bug] Color class >># colorFromPixlValue:depth:

It seems like Squeak *always* treats pixel values of zero as transparent. If this is the case, the line: p = 0 ifTrue: [^Color transparent]. should be inserted at the top of this method. -- Mike Klein mklein(a)alumni.caltech.edu

Running Squeak without sound card

I never think of this but... I just installed Squeak in a number of OS/2 boxes for new people to try out Squeak at my site. Unfortunately, our boxes are either without sound card or the sound card does not work under OS/2 (our boxes are originally configured for NT). Anyway, when we tried "play with me - 4" with the BookMorph ('Back to the Future'), when we hit the 'next' key, debugger comes up complaining primitive 170 failed. So one user who happens to know a bit of Smalltalk commented out SoundPlayer class>>primSoundStartBufferSize:rate:stereo: and restart the process. And then another debugger came up complaining primitive 173 failed and when she finally decided to close the debugger, the system completely hanged and she has to reboot the system. Version 0.3d91 of Squeak for NeXTSTEP

A new version of Squeak for NeXTSTEP 3.3 is available. Please check http://www.imaginet.fr/~pjb/develop/squeak/english/ for downloading instructions and the README file (release notes). The next version will be 1.0, will integrate VM-2.2, and will be the last version for NEXTSTEP 3.3 I'll work on (I'm upgrading to OPENSTEP 4.2). As an aside, the gzip format is a more common format than StuffIt sea. I would vote to use gzip for all portable files such as images and sources.
