Hello All, Our last news update was 6 years ago. https://news.squeak.org/ That is a very long time to have nothing happen! It is entirely my fault although I have been asking for someone to take it over. I haven't done it often enough. I'm doing it again now. HELP! Ok to try and do it a bit better. Why: because not everyone reads the mailing list. It is a good way to reach potential and existing users of Squeak to let them know what is going on. Small simple regular articles about what is happening is a great way to promote the squeak community and to give it more life. I still believe that news.squeak.org has real value and it would be great to have someone, who does read the mailing lists, post articles about what is going on. It doesn't have to be big events, just interesting ones that squeak users would want to know. The articles don't have to be long, just a paragraph or two and a picture would be nice. There are a ton of things that have happened in the past 6 years but we don't have to go backwards even just going forwards would help. Since news.squeak.org started we have had 750K views. our best month had 25K views. Our top article is this: https://news.squeak.org/2007/12/29/old-smalltalk-pics-from-parc-place/ with 35K views. Would someone or everyone that reads the smalltalk lists please step up and agree to periodically post articles to news.squeak.org? In other words: HELP! If you are willing to help please contact me and I'll give you an account on our wordpress site so you can start posting articles. I can also answer any questions and help get you started. Anyone using FileMan package?

I was just taking a look at the FileMan package (https://github.com/mumez/FileMan) since I've heard it mentioned as having some improved file name handling. It looks like it would need a little mangling for Squeak 6 and it seems to have a difference in how "this string' asDirectoryEntry works that might be a problem. Current trunk Squeak will return nil if one tries to do 'nonexistentfilename' asDirectoryEntry but FileMan will create an FmDirectoryEntry; so any code that anticipates nil meaning "the file wasn't there" will have issues. monticello browser says it is updating SqueakSource...Xtreams when I save to a local cache

Hi folks, I am in the process of undoing my rookie kludge in Xtreams where I stored my grammars in the PEGParser class alongside the other grammars. When I save to my local cache, the Monticello Browser says it is updating the squeaksource site. I checked and it appears to be fine. But I want to make sure I did not muddy up the project. cordially, t

Questions Loading Maui from SqueakMap

Hello, I wanted to load Maui from SqueakMap but as I'm running a 6.0 image, there is no corresponding Maui verson in squeakmap. I first tried to load version 1.53, but that is giving following error: [image: mabase1.png] Then I tried the Head version, but that proposes met to merge code. Not being a specialist, I don't want to rush into this. Is it safe for the other applications in the image to start changing existing code? Which of the proposed options can I take best?.... [image: merging.png] Is there any chance for a Maui version for the 6.0 image, and if not, what is the best option for the proposed merges? Please don't see this as a complaint. Free time is scarce for everybody, so "We just don't have the time to keep up with all this" is a valid answer for me. Kind regards, Edwin Ancaer

The second should raise an error. Our dictionaries do not preserve insertion order so we don't even know which one is the duplicate. Looking at https://www.json.org/json-en.html & https://jsonlint.com/ I think the expectation is that the key must be a string and the value must be the json-ised value, so ``` Dictionary new at: 1 put: 2; asJsonString ``` should result in an error. Consider the first EBNF diagram on https://www.json.org/json-en.html - it can be simplified for this case to { string : jsonised-value}. Since we're exceptionally clever we could consider doing "make the key be a string of whatever we have" _except_ that trying to reliably convert non-string keys might open up entire pallet-loads of worms. What if somebody is making dictionaries where the keys are complex objects? Might also want to check on STON as well (https://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/6504).
