Byte ordering in Form (urgent)

Hi All, in trying to fix a bug in BitBLT to do with accessing a word following a bitmap I have had to understand Form and BitBlt's extensions for handling multiple byte order. In particular, if a Form has a negative depth its byte ordering is reversed w.r.t. a Form with positive depth. But in examining this code I think I have found an inconsistency, and I urgently need to check my understanding. In the Form and BitBlt code, a negative depth is stated to mean a Form whose bits are in little-endian byte order: *Form methods for accessing* *depth* ^ depth < 0 ifTrue:[0-depth] ifFalse:[depth] *nativeDepth* "Return the 'native' depth of the receiver, e.g., including the endianess" ^depth *Form methods for testing* *isBigEndian* "Return true if the receiver contains big endian pixels, meaning the left-most pixel is stored in the most significant bits of a word." ^depth > 0 *isLittleEndian* "Return true if the receiver contains little endian pixels, meaning the left-most pixel is stored in the least significant bits of a word." ^depth < 0 and BitBltSimulation (the Smalltalk code for the plugin that implements BitBlt) has two instance variables destMSW and sourceMSW that are true if the destination form or source form has a positive depth: *BitBltSimulation methods for interpreter interface* *loadBitBltDestForm* "Load the dest form for BitBlt. But if I have a look at the actual layout of bytes in a Form I see that the meaning of depth is that if it is positive it is the *native* byte order (little endian on x86, x86-64, ARM, big end on SPARC, PowerPC): Display fill: (0@0 extent: 1@100) rule: Form over fillColor: Color black. (Display bits at: 1) hex '16rFF000001' | bytes | bytes := Display bits copy. ByteArray adoptInstance: bytes. bytes copyFrom: 1 to: 4 #[1 0 0 255] i.e. the first word of the Display after writing the color black into the first 32-bit pixel is 16rFF000001 on Mac OS x86-64, or #[1 0 0 255] , which is little endian. When the Squeak BttF VM was first written it was written on Motorola 68k Macs and PowerPC Macs, which are big-endian. So it is natural that at the time the terms isBigEndian and isLittleEndian and destMSB sourceMSB were as they are now, because the platform was big endian. But subsequently when the code was ported to Windows x86 by Andreas Raab, the meaning seems to me to have changed. Now depth > 0 implies *native* byte order, not big endian byte order, and depth < 0 implies the *opposite of native* byte order, not little endian order. Does anyone disagree? Does anyone have corroborating or contradicting evidence? I ask because to make sense of the code I would at least like to change the variables in BitBltSimulation to be destNativeByteOrder and sourceNativeByteOrder, and I want to either delete Form>>isBigEndian and Form>>isLittleEndian and replace it with Form>>isNativeByteOrder, or redefine isBigEndian and isLittleEndian, eg as *isBigEndian* "Return true if the receiver contains big endian pixels, meaning the left-most pixel is stored in the most significant bits of a word." ^depth > 0 == Smalltalk isBigEndian _,,,^..^,,,_ best, Eliot

Hello The discussion about SqueakMap entries (see most recent email by Chris Muller) has shown that the following is important: You MUST check the 'published' flag in the entry. Otherwise the client code will load an older version thus not giving the users the release you intend them to give. Regards Hannes

Hi Chris and all You point out that Metacello is marked as community supported (see screen shot). The entry is from 2015. If I log into my account in SqueakMap I do not see a way how I can access that entry. The script there is long and outdated . [1] It needs to be replaced with Installer ensureRecentMetacello I wonder how I do that with the current UI? https & woocommerce; basicAuth etc?

I'm trying to be able to access my WooCommerce plugin stuff from Squeak and it's tantalisingly close to working. Part of the problem is that I'm just not very familiar with how http socketty stuff works - enough that I'm sure I don't know the right things to search for to get where I want. I *can* talk to the 'software add-on' to woocommerce and do things like generate software keys, check validity etc. which is good; it shows that I can get through using https (at least I think so - debugging seems to indicate SSL getting used and checked) BUT I can't do the more basic WC stuff that requires some authorisation. I'll admit that it puzzles me that the add-on doesn't need authorisation but that's how it works. So, can anyone point me to info or code that handles the 'basicAuth' - or indeed any other authorisation - for http sockets? A guide of the level of 'http sockets and authorisation for dummies' wouldn't hurt either! I did spot 'zinc' whilst floundering around. It seems rather old, and that doesn't necessarily mean bad but may mean borken enough to not work in any recent image. It might even have already been folded in? Load as Morph with NuScratch's ScratchFrameMorph seems broken

Hi! This may be something for Tim... I started with a 5.1 Squeak image and installed NuScratch 382, created a project and wanted to save it. That resulted in a DNU in skinAt:. That seems to work in the latest squeak trunk image. So I tried to copy my code by saving the ScratchFrame Morph to a file and load it in the file list with the 'load as morph' button. However that triggers another error. I have attached the 5.2 (trunk) error messsage when I read in the morph as well as the saved morph. How can I debug this further? Squeak 5.2 Release Checklist

Hi all, I thought I would make this thread to share a checklist of items we need to do for the 5.2 release for collaboration and reminders. These are just some things that came to my mind in 2 minutes of thinking about it, so please fill in the gaps by adding to this list or, remove from it by volunteering for some of the items. - Change version name from 5.2rc1 to 5.2. - Make sure the /squeak52 repository is on all packages and NOT /trunk. - commit change so when updateUrl is changed to trunk, it updates /squeak52 repository to /trunk so that version history works normally without hassle next dev cycle! - Make sure Preferences are initialized. - Release notes? -

Hello Installer ensureMetacello is the top entry in the 'Do' menu. But it should also be mentioned in the 'Extending the system' help entry. As it is the basis for many installations. --Hannes
