MC version diffing broken?

Whilst trying to work out what changed in DockingBarMorph between 4.513297 & the final release of 4.5-13680 I attempted to look at the diffs between to MC versions of Morphic. Boom - #snapshot not understood by nil, which seems to come from some problem in MCVersionHistoryBrowser>snapshotInfoFor: Re-tried in a vanilla 4.5-13680 image, for other packages, etc. Same issue. Change of value method in class CompiledMethod?

Hi, I found a comment in "CompiledMethod>>valueWithReceiver:arguments:" that says that this method should be changed to "^ self class receiver: aReceiver withArguments: anArray executeMethod: self" after the release of Squeak 4.3. I use version 4.5, but the implementation is still "^ aReceiver withArgs: anArray executeMethod: self". The (new) class method has no senders at all. May somebody look at it? Best regards, Maria

Talking to the real world from Squeak on a Rasppi

Hi, how do I use the camera and do IO on the Pi from Squeak? I managed to connect two Squeak images on the Pi via UDP so I think I could write (copy :-)) some python to do the IO and talk to Squeak via sockets. Are there alternatives? Plugins? How does Scratch do it? Thanks, Herbert

DropPlugin usage questions

I’ve just had to fix up some code that handled file drops. Since it was easy to mooch off the code in PasteUpMorph, that’s what I did - but I’m wondering what the reason is for the rather convoluted code in StandardFileStream class>requestDropStream: So far as I can tell the DropPlugin code provides a string representing the dropped file (along with the event carrying the number of files dropped etc) and then we immediately ask the plugin for an actual file handle. It’s a bit hard to see why the plugin needs to do that since we can open a file easily enough in other ways. I can see from the *nix and Mac OS code that they are just opening files ‘normally’ (and I agree with Ian’s comment /* you cannot be serious? */ by the way). The win32 code is less intelligible but seems to be doing much the same. Does anyone remember why we ended up going to this trouble to do something the hard way instead of passing the client a filename? Fresh Ubunut install, Installed Squeak with ubuntu package thingy and no images provided..is this normal?

Hi Guys, When attempting to debug the Scratch camera plugin issue, I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 13.1 64 bit. For grins, I searched for Squeak on their package tool and installed it. Clicking the icon brought up an empty "images" dialog where I guess I was supposed to select an image. Just an fyi. cordially, tty

The idea is that SqueakMap is not a repository (no saving code on box4) and code should be in a SqueakSource repository somewhere. At bottom, the map is a file that stores URLs. So if you want to store an alternate file format (i.e. sar), then you could put the file on a server of your own. Then you'd put the URL into the map as the release. But I think that the days of storing code on a Squeak box, which is then served by SqueakMap will not be continued in the migration to box4. That, of course, raises questions. What to do with all those (85% empty) directories in /squeakmap/sm/cache and /squeakmap/sm/accounts? 15% of those contain code of some sort. My attitude is that I may be working on a new version of SqueakMap server, but that I'm not responsible for migration. The new map will be an empty file. It'll only have the apps that I've put into it. Empty. I figure let people migrate if they want. This speaks to me about a catch-22 involving categories in SqueakMap, which is one of my least favourite features. I think your old code is always available, but the labels make it invisible. I think Chris Muller uses the filters (based on categories) liberally with each release. The reasoning is sound: only show packages that have been labelled as working with the latest release. The reason for that is to keep the hundreds of rotten packages out of sight. That's an admission that all those old packages are a problem. The catch-22 comes in, I think, when I say the new SqueakMap will be an empty file, a new map, and that all those old packages should ether be thrown away, or, at best, zipped into a glob and stored into a closet. I imagine this idea will meet with some resistance. The thing you need to know about the new SqueakMap is this: I'm building the tool I want to use. The Squeak community may be responsible for a legacy of SqueakMap code, but I, Chris Cunnington, am not. I will have moved things forward. If it's not far enough for people, the source will be freely available. It will be one of the first packages in the new map file, the 7000 series, (as opposed to the 5000 series). You'll be able to download the SMServer code from SqueakMap. Chris

Services, Universes, SqueakMap browser all seem broken in 4.5

While looking around in a 4.5 image to prepare to move my code into the ‘official’ image I idly noodled around some of the docking bar menus. I noticed that the Apps->Services Browser opened something that appears to actually be the PreferencesBrowser, and that after taking a look at the Services classes I have no idea what the entire package is supposed to do nor whether it is used much. Is it actually useful? I noticed that Apps->Universe Browser doesn’t do anything fun because it can’t load any data from the now non-existent universes.dnsalias.net And there are two entries (Apps->Package Universe Browser & Apps->Universe Browser) that open what looks to be identical browsers. IIRC we are planning to remove this stuff anyway, so perhaps it doesn’t matter too much. I noticed that Apps->SqueakMap Catalog & Categories sort-of open but after supposedly updating the contents hardly any of the packages you can see via a plain web browser appear in the lists. For example, in the development tools section I see only LispKit & Prolog and not the perhaps 100 other packages. And since one of the things I was originally intending to check on was space usage, I’m amazed to see 3Mb of strings (that’s about War and Peace), 9000 MCVersionInfo instances (and similar numbers of MCVersionName + DateAndTime, and Date, and Time). Wow.
