Hello, I have successfully proceeded in running TweakCore on the recent Squeak 4.4 trunk image (from Jenkins). And one of the famous existed applications developed in Tweak is the OpenGL procedural textures generator by David Faught. I make it also loadable to the current Squeak. You could download the ready to run image from here: http://krestianstvo.org/TweakCoreOpenGL-squeak44.zip or execute in the workspace in own image: "1. I'm submitting a bug fix and thought I'd ask what the current favoured procedure is. Simply submitting is as irritating as it ever was in Mantis, but once I've done that, uploaded my fix and made a note about it… what do we do next? To whom might I assign it for action in getting into the image for the next release? Or is that done some other way now? Hi All, I had fun implementing a quasi-quote for Squeak today. This is a convenient way of embedding substrings in format strings (a little like printf), and, because it uses a different quote character, a convenient way of embedding code form other languages in a string literal. An example of the former usage is `hello [#cruel] world` which evaluates to 'hello cruel world' And `Float pi is [Float pi]` evaluates to 'Float pi is 3.141592653589793' An example of the latter use is that one can write `printf("%s: %c\\n", "a string", 'C');` instead of 'printf("%s: %c\n", "a string", ''C'');' This last example shows a limitation; The use of \ to escape characters ($\ $[ and $`) in quasi-quote might not be such a good choice. Anyway I thought I'd put this in the in-box for people to play with and savage. Please let me know what you think, both about the semantics and the implementation. Loading FFI is broken

(Installer monticello mc: (MCHttpRepository new location: 'http://source.squeak.org/FFI')) install: 'FFI-Kernel-eem.24.mcz'. "There's a -tbn.25, but that's not important to this post" fails with an MNU: ExternalFunction class >> callingConventionFor:. As far as I can see what's happening is this: * during the loading of the mcz ExternalFunction is defined, * a method is parsed (#XOpenDisplay, which has a pragma <cdecl: X11Display* ''XOpenDisplay'' (char*) module:''X11''>) * Parser >> externalFunctionDeclaration checks whether ExternalFunction is defined. * It is, so tries to evaluate `descriptorClass callingConvention: here` and boom, because ExternalFunction class >> callingConventionFor: _has not been loaded yet_. I've seen this kind of issue with Helvetia code: sometimes you simply have to load class-side methods first. Thoughts? Lukas worked around the issue with his Helvetia code by directly patching Monticello, and ripping out its "try to do atomic loading" mechanism. frank

CogVM binaries as per VMMaker.oscog-eem.302/r2749 Fix bad performance regression that on certain platforms (linux) results in all send misses causing a discarded PIC creation followed by a slow hash lookup. Fix bug when assigning to some context inst vars from generated methods. Add accessors to document the context inst var access scheme. Fix a compiler warning comparing an error code in cog:selector: Update the BitBltPlugin to include the fast Arm ASM option. Fix type errors in the Cogit that prevent the Cogit working when compiled with clang. Specifically void * pointers are not comparable. Make sure that fetchPointer:ofObject: & isIntegerValue: are declared in cointerp.h. Update the Newspeak version of the VMProfileLinuxSupportPlugin. Improve robustness of the nscogbuild/unixbuild mvm scripts. Add the linux policy change dance to sqUnixVMProfile.c (cf sqUnixHeartbeat.c). Fix a bail_out typo. Change the VMProfileLinuxSupportPlugin to follow symlinks, answering pairs of module name, dereferenced symlink or nil. Fix 3 (!!) bugs in primitiveDLSymInLibrary. -- best, Eliot

I'm running with Compiler-nice.274. What's weirder is in that top stack frame (Compiler >> #evaluate:in:to:notifying:ifFailed:logged: the following all show up as red, because they're references to instvars that don't exist: class, sourceStream, context, requestor. That's because the CompiledMethod that's running is not actually the right CompiledMethod! It's from some ancient pre-CompilationCue Compiler instance. Or at least so I suspect because that Compiler instance has a nil 'cue' instvar. I've been trying to sort out mantis-1650 and siblings; oh boy what fun. Basically at some point the shape of CharacterScanner was changed so that primitive 103 could no longer work; nowadays we waste time in starting up the primitive and never doing anything but failing it. The fallback code is pretty ugly too, though I have a few small improvements for it. We can't reasonably 'fix' the primitive since it is required to support older images, in particular Scratch on the Pi. Anyone doing something that compromises *that* will get a quiet visit from The Boys. We *could* add a new primitive, of course. It's also possible that for a lot of modern machines running Cog it might not be worth it - but not all machines are cogged nor fast. Part of the complication is that we have rather lot of font related classes these days and not all of them are even subclasses of AbstractFont. So far as I can tell the major change was due to an attempt to handle fonts that can have character pair kerning, which looks like only FreeTypeFont. All the others are wasting time both through losing the primitive support and pointlessly finding out that pair-kerning does nothing new. Oh and FT2Face seems to be off on its own for some reason I haven't discerned as yet. Obvious question - who is most up to speed with what the hell Fonts are up to these days? I have some Questioning Instruments warming up for you… MultiCharacterScanner brings in a whole new level of insanity, not least because it uses identical code including the pointless call of the primitive - and the two senders of these two methods are also (effectively) identical. And do, just for grins, take a look at the only reference to MultiCharacterScanner - FreeTypeFontProvider class>initialize. Oh my. And let's consider references and uses to other classes in that hierarchy - in NewParagraph>characterBlock* MultiCharacterBlockScanner is used for WideStrings but in Paragraph>composeAll it is used for both byte strings and wider strings. And then there is GrafPort>displayScannerForMulti:…. How have we got into such a mixed and messy state? Did some experiment get partially worked on and forgotten? These version comments are redundant with the code-diff; we can see that 'presenatation' vars are being removed, so could you also please explain _why_ changes are being made in version comments? Is this a cleanup? And may we expect no impact to any paragraph / text-editor behaviors?
