Apology for offensive spam on annoncements list

I apologize for this coming through on the announcements mailing list. I hope everyone realizes that I did not send this. Several copies were received purportedly 'from' various community members. With the announcements list I have had a policy of moderating all messages, even those from subscribers. But in the last year or so I had begun to relaxen this somewhat by whitelisting anyone who sent messages regularly, this included myself. Clearly this was a mistake and I will now remove myself and everyone else from the whitelist and I will have to go back to moderating every single message. Hi-- Please contact me, directly or in this thread, with questions about the team or any of its meetings. - Attending on 2009-02-04 were Bert, Craig, Edgar, Randal, and Yoshiki. Absent were Giovanni and Igor. - Craig says that Marcus Denker from Squeak e.V. has volunteered to continue communication for the next year with Hetzner (Squeak's current online service provider) and pass the bills to us each six months. In the meantime, Craig and the web team will discuss what to do in the longer term. - Randal says Matthew Fulmer has applied Yoshiki's patches to 3.10.2 for creating the license-clean 4.0 release, is reviewing new author initials that have cropped up, and is writing a complete report. thanks, -C

DotNet Bridge links are dead

DotNet Bridge is a useful package to connect Squeak to .NET. But links to the main web site are dead. http://www.saltypickle.com/squeakDotNet A student at Multimedia University, Malaysia is doing a final year project to extend DotNet Bridge and needs the C# source code for the project and any information of setting up the code. I get this DNU when I choose OBPackageBrowserAdaptor as default browser (log attached). Technical Report on OLPC Etoys

A new Technical Report has been posted to the VPRI website, titled "Etoys for One Laptop Per Child" by Scott Wallace, Yoshiki Ohshima, and Yours Truly: http://www.vpri.org/html/writings.php Abstract We present an overview of the “OLPC Etoys” system, describe the intensive two-year development effort that produced the system, and discuss lessons learned. OLPC Etoys is an end-user authoring system for children, which was chosen to be distributed with the OLPC XO laptops at an early stage of the OLPC project. Since we planned to derive OLPC Etoys by evolving an existing, mature system (“Squeakland”), it was expected to be a relatively straightforward undertaking. However, the OLPC XO platform’s special hardware characteristics, the evolution of the Sugar software stack, and the fundamentally international and multilingual nature of the project, all conspired to make the development effort challenging. Over the two-year course of the project, we successfully kept up with the challenges, and delivered usable Etoys systems for every OLPC release. We steadily improved the UI, added a few high-leverage features, and ﬁxed bugs, with a small and widely-distributed team and with help from the community. - Bert -

Scheme continuations vs Squeak continuations

hello list, I realized yesterday that my scheme implementation in Squeak failed to evaluate properly the so-called "mondo bizarro" code: (let ((y (call-with-current-continuation (lambda (c) c)))) (display 1) (call-with-current-continuation (lambda (c) (y c))) (display 2) (call-with-current-continuation (lambda (c) (y c))) (display 3))) ... which should display "11213" instead, it writes "11" then goes on forever printing "2" I wrote the equivalent code in Smalltalk: y _ Continuation currentDo: [:c | c]. Hi all. Squeaksource looks like it's down: no response (not connection refused) on port 80 despite the box pinging. Some firewall rule been changed? Problems with FFI, SqueakDBX and MacOS

Hi people: I am asking for help with squeakDBX in mac. Yes, I am one of the developers, so ? heheheheh The thing is that Michael Atkisson is trying to getting working and have problems. As I know very little about mac, I ask for help. The problem is that FFI is not founding the openDBX library. The error is the famous "unable to find function address'". This is his enviorment: - Image: the 201 core, updated using the system update. - Squeak vm: 3.8.18beta3U.app - OS: Mac osx 10.5.6 - FFI instaled from here: http://map.squeak.org/accountbyid/cf58c358-46ee-465e-b6db-2740e9b32a53/file… - DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/local/lib/:/usr/lib" ..... - PATH=/usr/lib:/usr/local/lib:other entries .... - Check the property SqueakPluginsBuiltInOrLocalOnly in Info.plist de la VM was in true but changed to false. - The ls of the directories of /usr/local/lib and /usr/lib are above. - We also try to put the openDBX library in the directory where is the VM or the image, but the same. - I read this: http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/5846 Is this true ? Dear Squeakers, welcome to this edition of The WeeklySqueakSummary, an irregular traffic-dependent report on what's going on in the world of Squeak based on the WeeklySqueak blog. Again, too many weeks have passed since the last issue, but the number of items given below is still rather small... is that good? Let's produce more news, preferably good ones! Highlights of the past weeks: I'm not sure whether it's a good or a bad sign that some Gartner analyst has come to the conclusion that Smalltalk is a good thing [11]. Given what havoc analysts are capable of creating, it's probably a double-edged sword. One can take out of this whatever one wants, I think. Anyway, on to more pleasant things. About IDEs and GUIs: Trygve Reenskaug's DCI paradigm (read the reports on his home page, it's worth it!) comes with an IDE concept, which he has implemented in Squeak [6]. The Dependency Browser [12] allows for keeping track of one's classes and their interactions. Mars [20] gives you a native (read: Cocoa) GUI for Squeak on Mac OS X, and the Maui GUI tool kit has been updated [19]. Oh, and IBM rediscovers their likening for Smalltalk, integrating it with Eclipse [15] - I sincerely hope the project won't be cancelled given the raging recent layoff epidemic. Alien FFI [18] is a lean and mean FFI implementation, coming from Newspeak, and having been ported to Squeak. SqueakDBX [2] is a relational database access layer. Squeak is available for the iPhone [7] (makes me wish I had one), and Pier has been updated [9].
