[ANN] Monticello1.5/1.6 is now fully under MIT

The audit involved scanning all of the following repositories: 1. Wiresong/mc (duplicated in squeaksource/Monticello) 2. impara/mc 3. squeaksource/mc 4. squeakfoundation.org/39a 5. squeakfoundation.org/310 Scanning every single version of the following packages 1. Monticello 2. TweakMC 3. MC1.5 4. MonticelloConfigurations 5. PackageInfo Collating every contributor, of any method, anywhere. Those initials that I am treated as approved are in the package MethodAuthorship, class side of class Authorship. It defines the following categories 1) contributor signed the viewpoints agreement, 2) mc1.5 contributors (the squeaksource repo was designated MIT licence) 3) pharo contributors (those who made their contribution to Pharo under MIT) 4) new squeak contributors (e.g. Ralph Johnson) Assuming that these lists are acceptable, we have now completed the audit of Monticello MC1.5, MC1.0 (in 3.10.2), MC1.0 (in 3.9), MC1.0 (impara's versions) MC1.5 has had a few minor changes applied in order to ensure that it does not use any contributions from any non-approved authors. Thus MC1.5/1.6 is now completely licenced under MIT. Decoupling Interpreter <> ObjectMemory (Was: Winds of change)

Hello list, in the light of discussion about embedding & callbacks, i just thinking, what if we decouple interpreter state from object memory state? In potential, then we could have multiple instances of interpreter which can work with same object memory. Not concurrently, of course :) This could give us a freedom in a way, that external application, at any point of time can use own interpreter instance to make a message sends and get results. Lets not take a cost of refactoring into account by now :), i just want to hear what you think it could give us from architectural perspective. Or, there is another/better alternatives to use squeak by external application like in following C pseudo-code to work w/o much troubles: class = vm.getClassByName("MyFoo"); object = vm.sendMessage(vm.symbol("new"), class); result = vm.sendMessage(vm.symbol("dosomething:"), object, vm.smallInt(1)); -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko AKA sig.

Plus to a little of more documentation, I think one of the problems is not an inconsistent base class, is some packages we install and change this base. This is some powerfull of squeak,but dangerous too.if a package change some,it must warning, and/or launch the test to check all still ok at least. For example,as far as i remember, FFI must be one of the things you must install before Installer, because the last brokes something for FFI. We, as developers and/or "core" collaborators,must have always in mind,one of the best tools squeak has, SUnit, and use it, going always to green. I know some people do a great job on this not so far. I would like to ask, something too,to know if i'm wrong.universes was created to have a collection of packages thath works with a specific version, and solve dependencies.but,don't you think,we abuse of it? As my example with FFI, if this doesn't install,then something is going wrong. Or install postgress (or glorp,i dont remember)an a primitive fails on tests On squeakmap times, the package warning you about is not release to this squeak version,or not as stable to install.if you install it, something can go wrong.i like this idea,knowing you can install a package without fear. Implement dependencies to SM could be a solution? As always, only ideas trying to get a better squeak every time. It's time for Squeak 4.0!

Squeak 4.0 is within sight. With this release, the four-year relicensing project of the Leadership team will be complete. We will be able to incorporate under SFLC, and Pharo will be one step closer to a 1.0 release. Squeak 4.0 will be the first official squeak release with no code under SqueakL; everything in the .image, .changes, and .sources files will be under either the MIT license or the Apache license. I've done the first step and done a full audit, using Yoshiki's tools [1], of all the code in Squeak 3.10.2, with the exception of four packages: - Monticello - SUnit, TestRunner, and SUnitImproved - Universes - Traits I also applied all of yoshiki's etoys changes to 3.10.2. The algorithm that Yoshiki seemed to follow when cleaning etoys is: - If the method can be easily deleted, delete it - Otherwise, use the historical image [1] to revert to the latest version before the problematic author - Fix any bugs this causes I think we can use the same procedure. Perhaps Yoshiki will comment. So, to help with the relicense, grab the historical image[1], check out the license audit [2], leave a note on mantis about what you think you'll work on, and start rolling out change sets. For your convenience, all of the license audits are included both in the relicensing tools download and on mantis. I'll try to keep both up to date as we progress with the relicense I'll also be looking for an official license statement from the authors of Traits and Universes; if those can be unambiguously shown to be MIT-licensed, it will save me a couple of audits. SUnit and Monticello already have enough problems that I know they are not clean. Hi, Other silly idea for the web team and community. Yesterday, on a spanish list, someone show me some screenshots about an application builded on Squeak with GOODS, and give some description about the project (objects cuantity, performance, etc..). I think, this could be profitable, if all people (and companies involved), thath use Squeak for her projects, show her to the world, and explain a little how it works. Squeak.org has a Projects section, but its content, is more like "libs" than applications. Could be interesting a page to show all "commercial" projects squeakers has. To start, we can put DabbleDB, Qwaq, PierCMS, The apps from Pinesoft CO, and so on.... What do you think? Cheers.

[ANN] MC1.5 - Scan a whole repo for author initials

For help with relicensing efforts, I added this feature to MC1.5 (it will be re-packaged as an addon in due course) You can now inspect a package version for all contributors. 1) If you select a package "print authors" menu item is available in the repository browser. 2) If no package is selected then "print all authors" menu item is available, and it will scan through the entire list. 3) To scan an entire repository "switch to single column browser" first. regards Keith

Using Multiple Microphones

Hi together, I try to use the input of multiple microphones (four) in a squeak application. I already asked this question on the German list and got the reply that it won't work. Does anybody has an idea for a workaround? Squeak might not really be the best language for my project, but as soon as I have the sound signal, squeak is perfect for my needs. I also thought about using opencroquet or open cobalt, to record four microphones on four different computers and to integrate the input in a common world. Any ideas? Thanks a lot Martin

Updating Monticello 1.5

HI, If I take a fresh 3.10.2 image, apply my process to build my own dev image, and when I try to install Magma, I get a DNU UndefinedObject>>load installing Monticello 1.5 o_O Few hours ago, this process worked smoothly, and some hours later, the same process crash. Log is attached. I don't know very well how to read logs, but as far as I can deduce, the problem could be thath MC15, is trying to download a package (Monticello.impl-kph.616) from squeaksource.com, but the name of the package is wrong (the correct seems to be Monticello.impl-mtf.616. But I don't know if I'm seeing dragons flying on my room or something similar, because some hours ago, magma (and of course, MC15) installed ok without troubles.
