loading VM for the Mac

Hi all, I am expecting a visit from a Mac user and try to prepare for the installation of Squeak on his machine. The task proves too hard for my limited brain. I go to http://www.squeak.org/Download/ First I try to download latest release for Mac. I get a Zip file with two directories: __MACOSX and Squeak3.10.2-7179-basic A subdirectory of the first is a different Squeak3.10.2-7179-basic. I find the other subdirectories utterly confusing. Is this supposed to be the simplest entry into Squeak for a Mac user? Surely a README file would be useful here. The Download page also has links into the individual files. I now have to choose between MacOSX (Universal) and MacOS 7.5.5 to 9.2. A Mac user would know what to choose here. I hope the choice isn't the latter, because MacOS 7.5.5 to 9.2 is a dead link. MacOSX (Universal) lead to the above mentioned two subdirectories, but with different contents? May be all this is perfectly clear to a Mac user. I'll find out when my friend gets here. [ANN] Number comparison, hash, NaN, Point, and other partially ordered sets

Happy new year everyone. After VWNC recent discussion about comparing Point and Number, I tried to make a review of my previous work concerning all these minor (but annoying) comparison bugs. I think I now have an acceptable and consistent solution. NB: I am sending this announcement to squeak-dev as we also do a lot of work with dynamic languages, specifically Smalltalk. -- Applications are invited for a PhD candidate or a postdoctoral researcher at the Software Composition Group, University of Bern, Switzerland. The Software Composition Group carries out research in programming language design and software reengineering with the goal of facilitating the development of flexible, open software systems. The SCG is led by Prof. Oscar Nierstrasz and is part of the Institute of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics (IAM) at the University of Berne. browser hierarchy without list indices?

Hi All, I'm wedded to a variant of the class browser which uses a button in the title bar that enables multiple pages within the one browser. This is great but falls foul of the use of indices into the lists of categories, classes, protocols and selectors in the browser. For example if one reorganizes the system categories in one browser view when one switches to another the index is wrong. The right thing to do is for the browser to hold the actual symbol for the category, class, protocol or message not the index. There is a PluggableListMorphByItem class to make this easy. I've moved the browser across to this scheme this afternoon but have realized I need to do MessageList, not just HierarchyBrowser. I wonder has anyone made this transition already? Eliot

Hi-- The Squeak leadership team meets on first and third Wednesdays. Please contact me, directly or in this thread, with questions about the team or any of its meetings. - Attending on 2009-01-07 were Bert, Craig, Edgar, Igor, and Randal. Absent were Giovanni and Yoshiki. - Rita from Squeak e.V. submitted a PayPal money request to Craig for a EUR 974 reimbursement of past squeak.org server hosting bills, and Craig paid it, from the the USD 2000 he was holding from the moribund incorporation allocation. - Randal said the web team has chosen some captcha code to use for community messages to the leadership team via the Squeak website. They are adapting and testing it. thanks, -C

Balloon3D

Hi all, I was thinking of including some 3D charts on a little quantitative finance framework I am working on in my spare time. I don't want to achieve any avant garde 3D things, something that resembles what spreadsheets do would be fine. I found the Balloon3D framework, that seems to be really fabulous. Although I had a bit of trouble installing and running some of the examples. I have no previous experience whatsoever in 3D graphics, so my questions are: - What are the best sources to learn about Balloon3D? - Maybe some other pointers to learn the general basics of 3D graphics. But again, I don't want to become an expert on this matter, I would like to know enough to work well with the existing tools. Thanks ! r

Box-Admins Team Report for December, 2008

The box-admins team is reponsible for seeing that the community shared server is maintained and setting up any new features to be hosted on that server. For December, 2008: No news is good news? Seriously there's nothing to report. But I guess that is worth reporting in and of itself. The community server has now been up for a solid 77 days since our troubles in October. I want to thank the community for the monetary support needed to fund the box and remind you that the bills continue to appear and that you can currently contribute to the hosting bills by going to http://www.squeak.org/Foundation/SupportSqueak/ and purchasing a Squeak badge. Execute code when a Morph is destroyed

Hello, I would like to execute some code (closing a serial port) when a morph is destroyed by an user (either by clicking on the cross or by drag&dropping the morph to the bin). Do you know how to do that? As a bonus question, is it possible to detect, on the contrary, when a morph is restored from the bin (to reestablish the communication) ? Thank you! Séverin
