Isn't the naming convention part of the external language of squeak? That is, something we all must argee upon* inorder for packages to be interchangable? Making one's own convention only works on one's own island. When it comes time to share the problem of dealing with external language remains. (NOTE: This message doesn't have anything specific to do with *Lint, so please don't read it as such) Depending on the software you are working with, sometimes it is more time efficient to work on existing software, and in some cases it can actually be better to start from scratch. So if you are paying people you can insist that they always use existing solutions unless they can prove conclusively that a rewrite will be better. But for people working in their free time it is a little different picture. Most people I know don't like maintenance stage software development and would prefer to write something new. That is, writing something new is more fun for them. So the choice may be that they either (a) make something new that has an interesting take on existing software or (b) try to refactor the existing software, get frustrated/bored and end up not doing anything at all.

I'm not sure, but it was easy to register it and this way we don't lose the name to someone else. I'll start adding things myself, others should feel free to do so. And we can see what happens. Ken

Looking for a postdoc...

Hi all, I'm currently looking for a postdoc (preferentially outside France). The postdoc could be in one these fields: Programming languages, Domain-Specific Languages, ... I do my Ph.D. at LIRMM (Montpellier, France) under the supervision of Christophe Dony and Marianne Huchard. During my Ph.D, I proposed a component-oriented language called Scl (Simple Component Language). This language has been designed to be as miminal as possible in order to clearly identify the essence of the component approach. The component assembly mechanism is central in Scl. This mechanism enables: (i) separation of concerns, since a component can be used as a regular component or as a crosscutting component (similar to aspects in aspect-oriented programming), (ii) arguments passing since it is achieved using temporary connections between components and (iii) adaptation, thanks to glue code, in order to connect components that are not plug-compatible. The most advanced prototype of Scl (proof of concept) has been implemented in Smalltalk. And another one has been started in Ruby. My Ph.D (http://www.lirmm.fr/~fabresse/these/these-lf.pdf) is curently the document that decribes best my work but it is written in French. But Maillist is not more comfortable. You can put rules to a mail client and move the mails to folders. And configure again to read in other computer. I do this, but a web interface to read, reply, comment, and post, is more easy IMHO. In maillist is harder to find something, or reply to more than one person. This without taking in count the digest. Reply to more than one mail with digest turned on is something like inferno. Other advantage is for newbies. Newbies every day is more younger, and youngers, is more familiarized with forums rather than maillists. Monticello doesn't create new packages

Hello, I derive all my images from a (3.8.2) start_dev image. I have that one messed up in a way that Monticello doesn't create any new packages. Actually the package is created but it has no contents. And it isn't marked as changed in MC Browser if I change a class of the package. If I change a class in an existing package the change is seen in MC Browser. I attach two of those empty mcz. I'm totally confused and don't even know where to start searching. The dev image has started as 3.8 and then subsequently been updated to 3.8.2 Thanks, Herbert

Etoys documentation in Spanish

Hello, I came back from an OLPC event held in Cambridge, MA and saw a lot of people from Latin America countries. Uruguay and Peru are officially deploying hundreds of thousands of XO laptops, and other countries are trying to do similar or smaller scale pilot test. The "vibe" (as Alan wrote) or the feeling of "making progress" was very strong. During the event, I was asked a lot of times about documentation in Spanish. I know there are bunch of documentation done in Spanish (in Latin America and in Spain), but I couldn't point out many of them by myself. I merely managed to point to the translation of the Powerful Ideas book but that was it. I think it would be nice to have a place to share these documentations, and have a single location to look at. Let us say if we have a good "documentation and curriculum" section on http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Etoys/lang-es, and people who have done documentations in Spanish add theirs to it, that would be nice. If you think it is a good idea, please start the section on the wiki and add the documentations? I will later check the page and let the people who are doing deployment and contents making in these countries know about it. Thank you! -- Yoshiki
