Squeak Board Member Responsibilities (was: [Newbies] Squeak Foundation Election 2008 coming up!)

Hi Richard, I'd be happy to summarize the responsibilities of the Squeak Foundation board members. The board members are elected by the community to help the community address issues. The issues depend on what the community wants done but more specifically what the elected board members are capable of accomplishing, given their abilities some but mostly because of limited time to devote to projects. There are no requirements for any activity or participation, nor are there currently any ways to remove board members, or even to replace board members that resign. We elect new members yearly. We are in the process of making a legal entity for the board. When that happens, the board will be bound by more formal rules relating to not-for-profit entities. But the ultimate responsibilities for that will be the Software Freedom Foundation Conservancy who will have the ultimate say, which protects board members. At that time I believe we do have a way to replace board members that resign. We are also in the process of re-licensing Squeak, with the help of Viewpoints Research Institute www.vpri.org . The board and the community are participating in that to help accomplish this task. If you received an agreement from VPRI and haven't sent it in please take a moment and do it!! We are also in the process of figuring out if a Technical Board should be formed that would have more responsibilities to lead the development of Squeak and be the final arbitrator of where we go technically, but this was only suggested by some current board members but hasn't happened yet. The current board meets on a monthly basis by IRC (so no travel required). They communicate also by a private email list. There was talk about allowing prior board members continued access to that list with no voting rights for advice (a board member emeritus status), but I'm not sure if that suggestion was ever followed up on. The previous board would post the notes of the meetings. This one did not or did not do it very often. There are some other responsibilities to keep the community running, servers, administrators, fund raising, groups responsible for code like network, VM, kernel ... and a number of volunteers that help keep things going. Those groups are semi-autonomous, because they are volunteers and because many of those groups existed before there was a board. I would think that they would consult with and heed the advice of the board if something warranted it. Mostly they keep going because they kept going in the past and because of some very talented, hard working and dedicated individuals. Now some disclaimers; I am not a lawyer, nor am I a board member, so take all this with a gain of salt. If I misstated anything I'm sure others will correct me, and if I left anything out please feel free to add to this summary of responsibilities. I just did this off the top of my head. how to avoid the windows poppuing up during updates

Hi Does anybody how to control the popping up of the visual feedback when doing an update? I would like to perform an update that should be done without involving fonts. Stef

doIt Plugin

I've been thinking about developing Firefox and or Thunderbird plugins to allow doIt's from these applications. Here's how I want it to work: - I select some code in an email I am reading - I right click and chose print it - If multiple images are running, a pop-up allows you to chose - A workspace is opened in the image with the selection in it - In the workspace the selection is evaluated and printed - The result is also displayed in a window in the browser This may seem a bit pointless, but the goal is to facilitate interaction. Once this is working, features could include: - File in - Browse menus (e.g. implemenators / senders) - Do it, debug it, print it, time it, etc - ? And, maybe going the other way (although these can probably be done now using protocol handlers): - Email it - Search for it - Google - Squeak-Dev - Seaside-Dev What do people think of this idea? Has something been done like this before? Any suggestions how I do it? Anyone interested in working on this? I haven't done any FF/TB plugin development before. I think it would be pretty straight forward to provide a web service on the squeak side. Not sure how best to do multiple image switching. Thanks, Zulq.

Faster LargeInteger printString

Just playing with numbers, i tried and cut cost of LargeInteger printString from n to (n log: 2) with a divide and conquer like method, reverting to SmallInteger fast arithmetic asap. Experiment is at http://bugs.squeak.org/view.php?id=6887 I'm just following the steps of Goran at http://bugs.squeak.org/view.php?id=6512 Of course, LargeInteger are not as frequent as Small ones, so added value is limited. But the challenge was fun. If you want to test or further improve, welcome. Nicolas

I a fan or Ferrari Formula One Team. Looking how the oldest and one of the most successful racing teams is composed , soon I found photos and bios of six persons for 2008 season Jean Todt - Aldo Costa - Stefano Domenicali - Mario Almondo - Gilles Simon - Luca Baldisseri But all know they have more a hundred workers. Some change tyres - Some refuel the cars at race - etc. I very sure the tyres man don't touch car for doing flaps adjust if this was needed on race. And the guy who do the flaps adjust don't do on his own, only under some engineer in charge. I always felt the Squeak Release Team is the Ferrari Team . I always felt only one good bolt change man or some knowing which wrench use. But we don't have Jean Todt now. I very happy if some Master take the lead. Of the very one leads man I have , I said we should find Jim Benson and hire he. Give he all money and all power. I'm here to help and learn. Edgar

(Ron beat me to it :) but this one is official) Dear Squeakers, A year has passed (oh, so quickly) and it is time to reflect a bit and ramp up your democratic rights here in Squeak country! Every year we elect the Squeakfoundation Board (http://www.squeak.org/Foundation) consisting of seven members from our community. This year I have stepped up as the election leader of 2008 relieving Daniel Vainsencher of this duty (thank you Daniel for earlier elections!) and hope to lead us through it without too many problems - after all, we know how this works by now. :) The schedule and process is as follows, only slightly adjusted from earlier years: Now through 22nd February (circa 18 days): Nominations of board members Candidates should nominate themselves on the squeak-dev mailing list. Or if you nominate someone else, make sure that person really wants to run. :) 22nd February to 29th February: Campaigning period During this period the candidates should ideally present themselves and the community can ask questions. We will probably organise some form of structured Q&A activity - details to follow soon. 1st march 6PM (18.00) UTC: Online election starts using the CIVS system The voting period is one week long and ballots are sent out via email. Only Squeakers rated as Apprentice (or higher) on people.squeakfoundation.org are eligible to vote - make sure your email address is up to date there!!! 8th march 6PM (18.00) UTC: Online election ends Results will be announced as soon as possible on the 8th or 9th. IMPORTANT: In order to vote - be sure to confirm that you have an account on people.squeakfoundation.org and that your email address is up to date. If you are not already registered on the site do so as soon as possible. Include information about your participation in the Squeak community to aid everyone in determining your appropriate certification. If you have an account but cannot access it any longer please email box-admins(a)lists.squeakfoundation.org and specify your account name. When the voting period starts all voters will receive an email with instructions and a link to the voting website. If there are any further questions, just reply and I will follow up on squeak-dev. [Re] Storing objects in a binary file

Hi, Now I'm trying to use an ImageSegment to store my object now. (ImageSegment new copyFromRootsForExport: (Array with: myObject)) writeForExport: 'myObject.extSeg'. I thought it would work, but I have the same error again: 'This Context was not included in the ImageSegment'. Thanks for your help.
