mac carbon vm goes to v 3.8.10b15 experimental

I've posted a new carbon mac vm v 3.8.10b15 http://www.smalltalkconsulting.com/squeak.html Follow the link to the idisk, then to the experimental directory for Squeak 3.8.10beta15.app.zip This morning we realized the earlier 3.8.10x VMs would not run under 10.3.x Mind *all* earlier adopters seem to have 10.4.x systems, however someone had a back leveled iBook, poor fellow. Therefore I recompiled the VM with a SDK target of 10.3.x which fixes the problem. -- ======================================================================== === John M. I've posted a new SqueakFFIPrims plugin to my idisk v 1.4.0b1 http://www.smalltalkconsulting.com/squeak.html Follow the link to the idisk, then to the experimental directory for SqueakFFIPrims.v1.4.0b1.bundle.zip The Sophie/TK4 team has been busy working on Quicktime based Books, however it confirmed the issue that the Mac Carbon VM interpreter() thread is not thread safe with the UI for some FFI calls. Therefore in this version of the SqueakFFIPrims logic we now callback to the VM to ask it to schedule the FFI call on the UI thread. This adds a bit of overhead (people are welcome to measure) however it avoids the issue of having your FFI collide and crash with some window managment or quicktime movie task on the main thread. The update are on the SVN server FFI users should confirm I've not broken anything, also you should test the 3.8.10b15 VM for unix binary library interfacing to confirm that feature works. Note the use of the plist XML entry to tell the VM only to load from the Plugins, resources, or /System/ Framework/ directory. You must turn that feature OFF in order to refer to libraries in /bin/ lib etc.... plus trying 80 other combinations of names and paths hunting for the FFI module in question. I'll note I did build a Squeak Mac Carbon VM where interpreter() runs on the main UI thread and polls the OS event services for pending events, however when the macintosh menus are choosen, why the VM stops running. Not a nice feature, perhaps this is not fixable so I'm not migrating to this implementation yet. -- ======================================================================== === John M. mac carbon mpeg plugin goes to 1.5.1b1

I've posted a new mpeg plugin to my idisk v 1.5.1b1 http://www.smalltalkconsulting.com/squeak.html Follow the link to the idisk, then to the experimental directory for mpeg3Plugin.1.5.1b1.bundle.zip This version of the mpeg plugin adds the feature to deposit bits directly into a form with an offset, so for example a 800x600 video image to a full screen squeak 1024x768 Display object and avoid a bitblt to copy the form to the Display. This can reduce your CPU overhead by 24% or so. The required change sets are on the SVN server, cross platform, mpeg plugin. I'll note that V1.5.0 of the plugin added the feature to support reading an mpeg file from a memory buffer, versus from a file thus allowing you to embedd small mp3 ring tones in your squeak image and play them back without having them have to go to disk. Other platforms, windows, linux are welcome to compile for their target platforms. -- ======================================================================== === John M. More seriously... the governance of this community probably still needs work; I'd be happy to return to being a member of the Elections team and trying to get the election and governance side a bit more sorted. Not least, getting the Elections team itself on a sound footing, so that it doesn't look like something that was created by fiat of the Board. However, that's up to the new Board - they may want to do things a different way - and also somewhat up to Brent as team leader. I also still have a half-complete Smalltalk version of the SqP ranking algorithm (sorry Cees, family commitments went from manageable to full-time with little warning). One day we'll get this stuff into a sensible language! - Peter

My guess is that there's a disconnect here. I think a number of people see 'the board' as setting Squeak's future technical direction as well as / instead of its co-ordination role, and that they have chosen to elect people who are going in a technical direction that they prefer. If we are aiming to keep a technical community from fragmenting, this may not be a bad election outcome. If we are aiming to move forwards in a specific organisational direction, it may well be poor. If we're aiming to do both... well, I suspect the election just set some priorities! - Peter P.S. I'm glad the voters showed due diligence and placed me last!

creating a class at runtime....

Can I create a class at Runtime? I want to define a class this way MyObject class: #newclass so that myobject MyObject has the class message class: that return a new instance of newclass (but newclass is never devfined before.) I think i can write class: #aSymbol ^ SuperClass subclass: #newclass instanceVariableNames: '' classVariableNames: '' poolDictionaries: ''. that's true? it gives to me some errors... it seems that newclass can't receive messages that SuperClass accepts.... thanks for any advice, nelson

hi all, If a class doesn't understand a message, there is a chance to make it doesn't throw a "MessageNot Understood" exception. The code i'm porting behaves this way.... nelson
