functionality of Socket>>socketError

I'm investigating if Socket>>socketError is usable for anything. Could someone try this on Linux or MacOS: s _ Socket new. s connectNonBlockingTo: #(127 0 0 1) asByteArray port: 12345. and then print s socketError on Windows (WinXP) I'm still getting zero. -- Kamil

FFI on OSX: 'Error: Unable to find function address'

Hi. I'm trying to use the SQLite package from SqueakMap on Mac OSX but i keep getting an FFI errror message ('Error: Unable to find function address'). I've tried copying both libsqlite.so and libsqlite.dylib into both the Squeak directory and the Plugin directory but nothing seems to work. As i've understood it FFI on OSX works best using frameworks, but I could use some help with how to do that given the above files. Thanks, Adde

MVC vs. Morphic (was Re: Shrinking)

MVC is the first complex GUI ever so it's very old and its look and architecture can't gratify all demands on a modern user interface. But it's well-ripened, stable, compact and unpretentious. People know its limitations and when they have to work with it, they don't castigate it so much. And - as you say - they use it sporadicly now. MVC doesn't have better architecture than Morphic but its implementation is cleaner. Morphic is much more complex. You can't compare it to MVC because it has the other purposes. Morphic is easier to use for a developer and very flexible. IMHO developers are frustrated by Morphic. It's very modern and interesting GUI framework, but it didn't come up to all expectations. Firstly it doesn't look conventional, it doesn't contain implicitly standard GUI components like combo-boxes etc. Without mouse support you can do absolutely nothing. It has strange windows management. Inactive windows disable all its components (look at Zurgle to see it). You can't switch between submorphs using Tab key etc. But you can tell it about MVC too. One of the most strange features of Morphic and MVC is the single world cycle. One long computation can make whole GUI unusable. It's not a feature of Squeak's process scheduler. I have created an experimental window manager with separated message passing cycles, all GUI messages were sent through shared queues and it has worked perfectly. Pavel

package universes and filters question

Hi Lex, I have a question regarding package universes. Assumed there are separated universes for stable and unstable packages, U_stable and U_unstable. Now we put the union of these packages into a new universe U_all, but to know, where they have come from, we label each package with the name of the universe, from which it stems. As a result each package in U_all has a label #U_stable or #U_unstable. Now to my question: I see no difference between the functionality of - a dependency resolver working in U_stable (or U_unstable), and - another one working in U_all *together* with a filter selecting the wished packages with label #U_stable (or #U_unstable), before starting to work. HowTo Help: SimpleHierarchialListMorph

(speaking of the recent thread about morphic hardships!) I'm stuck and I don't know where to turn. I thought that I might use SimpleHierarchialListMorph as a way to display a list of text where each line of the text had arbitrary morphs below (like text, icons, radiobuttons, etc.) I'd like to be able to show a little icon to the side of the text list so that the user could select it (like FileList2) and the morphs related to this text line appear (drop down the list text below and show the morphs) or disappear. Simple concept. But, I can't figure out how to use this class. I've looked at the examples listed in the class but they are no help.. First off: maybe SimpleHierarchialListMorph is not the best solution. If so, can someone suggest alternatives? If I am going down the right path, can someone explain how to use this? (perhaps I'm just stuck at a brick wall and I can't see the forest for the trees.) TIA, brad
