[BUG] FileDirectory>>exists

Hi all, I just discovered that the message FileDirectory>>exists is returning true, even when the receiver is a file and not a directory. I am currently working with a 3.5-5180 image on Mac OS X. The tests FileDirectoryTests>>testDirectoryExists, >>testExists and >>testDeleteDirectory do also fail in that configuration. It seem to work with Windows, so I think this is a platform related problem. Cheers Lukas

Omnibase and subclasses of OrderedCollection

I have subclasses of OrderedCollection in my domain model. These subclasses have instance variables. In OmniBase, OrderedCollection has a custom serialization-deserialization strategy and has its own class identifier byte. This strategy ignores the instance variables of my OrderedCollection subclasses. Should I add a class identifier for my subclasses and create my own serialization strategy for them? If so, can I pick any arbitrary class identifier byte that's not taken by another class (I actually get errors when I try to do that...). Am I violating smalltalk style by giving my collections instance variables? Thank you in advance. [BUG][FIX] DeclarativePools

A few weeks ago we had a useful discussion about the problems of handling pool dictionaries and concluded that it might be useful to use classes to do the job. Andreas duly produced a prototype for us and included a really neat cleanup of scope handling. I've been checking out the code and it seems a nice step towards a solution - we should adopt it. I now have a revised version that:- a) is fudged to make sure that all the pools are installed in the image. This is a simplistic approach pro-tem until we solve the problem of dependency in SM1.1 - the classes are small and at least it would mean we can rely on pools being there for now. b) adds some changes to keep the 'explain' utilities working. c) simply prevents filing out of the new kind of pools dicts; we need to work out what to do here. We could of course file out the class of the pool dict but I think that is probably not correct. d) fix Smalltalk>poolUsers to handle the new pool classes. There are some methods that need discussion here:- ReadWriteStream & GZipSurrogateStream>fileOutClass:andObject: & ReadWriteStream >fileOutClass:andObject:blocking:, SmartRefStream>appendClassDefns, SystemOrganizer>fileOutCategory:on:initializing:, Class>fileOutAsHtml:, Class>fileoutSharedPoolsOn: - all may need simplifying to drop the pool fileout. Class removeSharedPool: won't work - is it useful anymore? I myself have never seen anything copied. Ever. What is copying, after all, but the creation of another thing that is identical to the original. This is impossible, because you cannot have to things which are the same in every respect. So the best we can hope for is to create another object which resembles the original in all the respects that we care about. In the case of a glass, this might be as simple as "can also hold water," a purely pragmatic definition of glassness. If we are holding an elegant dinner party, we might also care about shape, size, weight, and color to ensure that our place settings look good on the table. If we are chemists, we might care about the heat conductivity of the glass. In the real world, objects have no intrinsic definition. We can define properties we are interested in and compare objects with respect to those properties. But the objects remain what they are regardless of how we represent them in our minds. Similarity is in the mind of the comparator. So the act of copying requires a mind - a context, as you say - to define the parameters of the copying operation. In contrast, Squeak objects do have an intrinsic definition. They are defined by their class. Other object-oriented systems have other methods of defining objects, but they all use a definition of one sort or another. In order to better simulate the real world, we use the principal of "encapsulation" to hide that definition from other objects. For practical reasons, encapsulation isn't strictly enforced, we find it useful to break it every now and then - in inspectors or the debugger, for example. But for the most part, we want to treat objects as opaque. Like objects in the real world, we (and other objects in the system) cannot know their essence. This presents a problem for your idea of an external copier, copying the object according to it's context. Objects in Squeak are really very narrowly defined, unlike the real world which seems to be infinite in it's depth and richness. You can't examine the object in arbitrary ways, you can only do so in terms of it's definition - its instance variables, its methods, its class. But that would break encapsulation. Luckily there *is* something that can examine an object with out breaking encapsulation - the object its self. So in fact, it's quite reasonable to have an object copy its self. It's the only thing that can do so. Does that clarify anything? Colin

As I mentioned, if you need the flexibility of a level of indirection, put it in. It's the difference between a hard and soft dependency. If you have a hard dependency, you will not be able to remove PopUpMenu (ie. your app requires that functionality). A soft dependency means you require similar functionality but could be swapped out. In that case, put in a level of indirection and you're fine. That's just standard good practice. One of the problems with putting it on Object is that if you change it-- you change it for everything. Hi all, The ttf package in SqueakMap is not loading. I tried to install some TTF, some of it was for devanagiri(indian) languages and i got all garbage, even Arial Black was not good. [Q] More morphic layout fun

G'day all, In the following code, I'm programmatically adding the contents of ImageImports to a Rectangle morph... the results aren't at all what I expect... the created IconicButtons are laid out in a nice 4x3 grid, but they extend outside the bounds of the Morph they are being added to, and their bounds are increasing as they are added... any ideas? fonts and unicode

I've been tinkering with Squeak in my spare time and having a whale of a time learning Smalltalk and watching the little mouse and such. I guess I'm probably not the first person to say that the default fonts are horrible. Is it possible to add new, scalable fonts ? Has anybody done any work on antialised fonts ? And what's the state of unicode support in Squeak. I think everything I've looked at so far is stored in ASCII. Greg

Squeakers at ESUG

Who is planning to go to ESUG? I am, and I was thinking it would be nice to organize our Squeak presence there. At least to have some CDs and maybe shirts there, and depending on how many we are, maybe also organize some demos, bug(fix)-fest, and other nice stuff like that. Daniel

StrikeFont(NewYork12 15) becomes bold after #saveOnFile

hello list, I'm submitting again this problem I've had for a while since my previous post (a few weeks ago) did not get any answer. here we go: ---- my default font is NewYork12 15 when I save a TextMorph or a MenuItemMorph with #saveOnFile, then import the .morph file back in the image, the font becomes NewYork12B 15, bold. OTOH there is no problem with NewYork10 12 (the default one in Squeak 3.4). no problem with StringMorph either. how could I fix this ? Stef
