Hi all, I am a newbie to Squeak and Smalltalk. I have a problem with the 2.7 version on my Slack 7.1 (gnome/sawmill): It hangs when I click on the destroy halo of a morph. I compiled from source the VM but it was the same. Permissions are rw on .image and .changes. I am running all of that on an omnibook 6000. I am wandering where is the problem and I suspect it doesn't come from squeak. Has anybody encountered the same problem ? Keith

Event implementation

Hi folks, I've been trying to implement the event-processing VM extensions, and the result has been erratic and very sluggisch behavior with mouse-clicks etc. in Morphic. Very often, mouse-clicks are seemingly not recognized at all, despite being passed on to Squeak. Interestingly, things improve (though not perfectly) if I drag the mouse with the button down. Clicks that just generate a single mouse-down followed by a single mouse-up rarely get recognized at all. Things that I am unclear about are the exact meaning (units?) of the timestamp value in the event structure, as well as what types of events are expected. For example, currently I get 2 events from my OS for a mouse-click, a mouse-down and a mouse-up, which are translated into squeak mouse-events with the corresponding button-flag set and cleared, respectively. Is this correct? Is anything else expected, maybe some-sort of timed "MouseStillDown" event? Puzzled, Marcel

[ENH]MPEGPlayerMorph (0.3)

Attached is a very basic MPEGPlayerMorph It has currently three buttons: Open: opens a menu so you can locate a mpeg/mp3 file and select it, and then starts executing what ever it is. Stop: stop playing the stream (s). Play: Plays the stream (s) from beginning. Also added is a progress bar, so you can see how much is remaining of the song/video :-) Please enhance this more ! Karl

It's the C compiler's job to handle the whole pointer/int abstraction, and if sdcc does provide the C programmer with 32 bit ints and 32 bit void*, Squeak should work. The thing to be concerned about is code density and performance. I mean, the 22-bit addressing through DPTR0/1 on the TINI chip is not like the HC11's 16-bit limits where it would be very difficult to produce a C compiler to automatically address more than 64k of memory. But it takes at least four instructions to store an int to memory, and that's not counting how much effort it takes to get DPTR pointing at the right place. I haven't read the docs on the TINI Java implementation yet, but I'd guess their oop is 16-bit and indirect. That's probably not a bad way to go for a smalltalk implementation on that hardware. I was hunting around for other boards, and I think the easiest way to find reasonable ones are boards that already support uClinux. Whatever processor architecture they have on them, they'll have a known-good C compiler that supports 32-bit memory addressing. Of course, if you do a port to the ucsimm, a port to bare palm hardware would probably fall out too. :-) Jay

First, it has a general timestamp class, so you don't have to pass around two-element arrays all the time. Second, it distinguishes local time from GMT time, so my patch for local vs. GMT time fits in very nicely. Good stuff.... -Lex

1. What if you put the delay *after* #closeAndDestroy instead of before it? 2. (Just verifying) What if you change #closeAndDestroy to #destroy? If the first helps, then its not the socket operations but loop further out. [GOODIE] OpenGL for Squeak

Hi everyone, Here's hardware acceleration in squeak with OpenGL: www.cosmocows.com/OpenGL/ Afraid it only runs on windows (feel free to port it elsewhere)! This is a work in progress, I'm still exploring Squeak (and OpenGL). The page includes a description, example code, a list of bugs, limitations and questions. The big question:How about OpenGL in the VM under balloon? Enjoy, Wiebe.

Hi, Squeak is trying to play a sound and failing.
