garbage collection in a distributed environment

I've been told that garbage collection techniques don't work when objects are shared in a distributed enviornment. Is this the case? It seems like there should be ways in which networked objects are GC'd as part of the vending mechanism. ab __ Adam Bridge Idea Processing

My thought is to change the Utilities class absorbUpdatesFromServer method to not put you into this state in the first place. The attached version of the method will stop loading updates after the first failure, and report how many were loaded, how many weren't and the url of the first one that didn't load. In your situation (having started from a clean image) after a failure, you could then retry the updates and have it pick back up from where it left off. Probably even better would be to have both types of behavior selectable in some way. fileOut failed due to Win restrictions

Since $< is one of the forbidden characters in Windows file names, ClassDescription|#fileOutMethod:asHtml: fails when one tries to fileOut, for example, a #< method. Chars forbbidden in Windows file names are: $\ $/ $: $< $* $> $? $| $". So, I think that Squeak should take some care when filingOut binary methods. Saludos, Leandro

If things seem OK, you could write a carefully crafter doit to determine which are missing, then use FTP in the fileList to bring in the ones you need. 3. In general, you could use, eg, fetch to import all the files and file them in with another carefully crafter doit. Methinks it's getting to be time for a new release which, thanks to the updates will merely consist of condensing changes and advancing the version of an up-to-date image and storing it somewhere. I'll try to do this within the week.

Irix 6.2 files

Does someone have the current V2.x version of Squeak built for SGI Irix 6.2? Point me to the proper resource and I'll go get it. All I'm able to find is Irix 5.3 of Squeak V2.x. Thanks, - STeve
